Hey everyone back with Railroads Online! Today Hyce and I are delivering heavy iron to the freight depot in order to make some money! Unfortunately we still only have little engines so this might be quite the challenge...

In Set Up Running: The Life of a Pennsylvania Railroad Engineman, Oscar P. Orr used to work with his engine crew to skip a coal tipple. This tipple typically had a line as most engines happened to run low on coal at that point of the line. It also was one of the last stops before their final destination. Oscar hated having to wait in the line and figured out a solution. His fireman would inspect his coal drag and mark a hopper which had decent quality coal with chalk before setting off. Later, as they waited in a rip track for a passing train, Oscar would uncouple the engine from the train and run it back to the marked hopper. He, his fireman, and their brakemen would then shovel enough coal from the hopper to the tender to get their engine to their final destination before lashing their engine back up in time for the other train to pass. He was the envy of the other enginemen forced to wait for the tipple as he sped on by and got home early.

Alot of fun here today folks, Kan and Hyce make yet another gold medal show, shades of The Great Locomotive Chase with Hyce as The General...question about telegraphs though, telegrams did cost money so maybe a small fee for "transmission" would eventually be appropriate, as to adding the infrastructure of a telegraph network that would add a lot to your server files, poles and wires rendering, strikes me as alot of extra demands on graphics and memory useage, I subscribe to the keep it simple theory myself
@Dallen9
@Dallen9 Жыл бұрын
If you've ever sent a money order then you have An idea what the cost to send a telegram was like. it would cost the railroad or telegram company a penny per transmission but cost the customer between $5-$25 a message. The cost to use the telegram system was more upfront cost than usage cost.

@TheIq2gamer
@TheIq2gamer Жыл бұрын
So the answer is basically because they don’t want to. Traditionally, The GOAT was never designed for main engine service. It was used more as a helper engine and rail yard helper. Irl, it would never be used as a main engine except in exigent circumstances. Since Hyce and Khan are somewhat trying to maintain realism, they aren’t using The GOAT. Could they, yeah. Do they want to, no.
@p3chv0gel22
@p3chv0gel22 Жыл бұрын
I think (but dont quote me on that) the Goat would (in real life) not be used, because it wasn't designed to carry a train over longer distances and would run slower than a train, that was designed for that. The Goat was designed to hurl around stupid amounts, but not necessary in a fast way In game i'd guess they don't want to

Hyce, gravity was rarely used to feed oil to the burner of the loco actually most oil burning locos used low pressure air (about 5 psi) in the tender oil tank which was sealed when running to push the oil to the burner where it was then mixed with either high pressure air or steam depending on design of burner to force the oil out of the nozzle into the firebox as the jet of flame. this is why all oil burning locos have a low thrumming noise when in operation. and this was how the fireman controlled the size of the fire when steam demand was low, cut back the oil and steam/air to reduce the flame until next time steam was required. versus adding green coal and closing the dampers as on coal fired locos

Bunker C (Short for Bunker Crude) is a refined fuel, its just a lower fraction and like Diesel is a compression ignition fuel rather than a sparked fuel. The same way Diesel is a lower fraction of petrol than gasoline is, and is also called Heating Oil. Heating oil is not a lower quality of Diesel. The only difference between Diesel and Heating Oil which taxes are paid on it. Bunker C is still quite fluid like diesel, it just burns more slowly the same way Diesel burns slower than gasoline. This also means you can compress it more therefore gaining more power from it when it combusts.

I love your vids Kan, but I have a question. If a steam train gets a big enough run up or slope to build speed, can the train do a complete loop de loop or no? Could the train even handle it?
@notbob555
@notbob555 Жыл бұрын
The hardest part would be making a reasonably smooth loop. Unless you mean in real life, in which case that would really depend on what size of engine.
@Demonslayer20111
@Demonslayer20111 Жыл бұрын
The train? Yes. The track? No. But if you were able to build a strong enough track and get the train going fast enough, it would stick to the track no problem
@BASTION1023
@BASTION1023 Жыл бұрын
Like the other said theoretically yes it’s possible. If we are talking steam engines irl then there is none that could complete a loop. Diesel or electric trains though could theoretically do it. But they would have to be going incredibly fast and the grade would have such a gradual increase and decrease that we are looking at a loop that’s almost as tall if not taller then the Empire State Building. It would also have to be only the engine unless it’s some sort of maglev. This is also assuming the tracks made out of something like vibramiam. At the speed needed (this is just a guess really) in the 200-300 mph range the track would go under serious stress. Anyway these are my thoughts. Take it with a grain of salt though cause I only know a tad bit about railroading

10:58 - the force on a train wheel is ALMOST sinusoidal, but not quite, as the rod is of finite length, meaning the middle of the strokes are closer together at one end than the other. This shouldn't make much difference in any realistic scenario, but it is the reason the rod is as long as possible on most locos.

If somebody already commented this, I'm not copying your comment. In Thomas and Friends, you know, the old model railway footage, they actually had coal hoppers and coal boxes, where you had to shovel tue coal into the tender/coal box. It's really interesting, but the show was based on the way the British Railway operated. That's why you see chain couplings instead of the knuckle joints you see on trains elsewhere.

I figure if you guys want to do gravity tracks if you put at the very end an essentially quarter pipe, but not really, it would kill the momentum of the car's without the abrupt stop of a stopper. That way you just pull the pin and let it go, and as long as the track is perfectly straight you shouldn't have any problems till you reach the end. Where you'll need to stop the load because although the quarter pipe thing will bleed the momentum it will eventually reverse its direction.

These locos in RRo were fire tube boilers - yes? - when did water tube boilers get introduced to rail locos?
@mountainman0
@mountainman0 Жыл бұрын
short answer - never long answer - multiple different RR companies and loco builders experimented with watertube boilers but none every got into large scale production. see B&O george emerson or SR oliver bullied leader class or LNER sir nigel gresley W1 class. though most though were only watertube firebox designs and all generally failed due to poor durability when put into trial service. difficulty in keeping them water/steam tight due to the vibrations and movement (twisting/buffing forces) and constant heat cycling in use and draughting issues. a water tube boiler is best suited for continuous relatively fixed outputs ie think power station or ship boilers but a loco has constantly variable demands on steam, every time the driver opens or closes the throttle the draw on the boiler changed and because watertube boilers have very small internal capacities. ( they hold about 10% of the amount approximately of the equivalent firetube loco style boiler) the pressure would drop and so would the water level and so the water had to be replaced and pressure recovered by forcing the fire then as soon as the demand for steam is lowered as the train reaches the desired speed, the fire has to be reduced or steam is wasted by blowing off through the safety valves - not easy to do with a coal fire on a grate as used on most locos and even with oil burners the fireman had to be very aware of the state of the boiler to try to match fire and water feeds to the boiler this all causes heat cycling and would cause fatigue cracking as well as priming on some of the locos and also burning the tubes by poor circulation of water in the tubes

be glad you didn't play it last year, that was pure torture compared to new track lol tracklaying tips: while laying track, change the grid size to 1 (num 8) - helps in spacing, and changing angle try and build your curves with Circle mode (num 5), if you can't, use 4+6 to aim the endpoint of your track in the direction you want it to go (helps the spline) try to keep sections of track to about 100m, if you go too far it stops rendering and makes it hard to line up to make perfectly straight track, use circle mode with a curve of 0 when laying a switch, you can pick which end you are holding/connecting with by pressing num 2 or 8 when laying track, num 2 + 8 also adjust the inclination of the rail ( to go up or down hills) hope this helps🚂

@nathanielhill8156

This actually happened, some standard gauge trains towards the end of steam had electric heater cores next to the firebox and the electric hookup from a trolley. The system was designed to lower the operational cost by reducing coal/oil usage. It did not become mainstream due to the cost of the heater and the lackluster fuel savings.
