If you missed Part 1 of our Sequoia adventure, be sure to watch that one first: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYTJanyEg7WimsU Would you rather do Part 1 - sunrise and donuts after climbing the 350+ steps of Moro Rock and drive your car through Tunnel Log or Part 2 - hike through the Sequoias and see some bears?🤔

Impossible to decide. I’ll have to do both. Take heart in what you learned and how sequoias survive fire. Controlled burns I’d think helped. I’d also think California would have a huge budget for forestry to help reduce risks of forest fires but I’m not educated in how it all works. Still sad. Love your videos so much. Thank you.
@FindingOurSomeday3 жыл бұрын
@@melpotvin8771 I guess you would just have to both! The fires are necessary but these last ones were very intense. Glad they are mostly contained at this point. Thank you for watching!

There is a section of road into Kings Canyon I would highly recommend. So unique and scenic. We also enjoyed a short hike to a waterfall (cascade) in Kings Canyon. Don't pass these little parks, they will surprise you.

Kings Canyon is definitely still on our list. We just didn't have time to add it into the day that we had already spent hiking in Sequoia. And we had been up since 4am to get to watch sunrise at the top of Moro Rock. Next time! 😃
@natlovell1223 жыл бұрын
The drive into Kings Canyon is by far my favorite stretch of road! Once you're down in King's Canyon it's like your own little world. Grizzly Falls, Roaring River Falls, Knapps Cabin, Zumwalt Meadow, and Muir Rock at Road's End are all places there that are amazing. But being anywhere in that canyon is extremely special. Just went last Saturday for the 7th or 8th time this year and the fall colors were beautiful. Maybe saw 20-25 other cars the whole day! I have sent so many people on that drive who think that Kings Canyon National Park is just the General Grant area and Hume Lake and have no idea about going into the actual canyon. I encourage everyone to take that trip just once! Also the campgrounds in the Cedar Grove area are awesome! By far my favorite place to camp in the Sierras.
@srac-n4t3 жыл бұрын
@@natlovell122 Have you been to both parks since the fire? If so, would you still recommend going? We are hoping to go for the first time in March (although I'm concerned it w/still be too cold). Do you think the Cedar Grove area is a good place to base ourselves to see both parks? Thanks!
@natlovell1223 жыл бұрын
@@srac-n4t I have only been to Kings Canyon since the fire and it was largely untouched. I can't speak of what Sequoia looks like but I believe all the roads are now open. This March should be an absolutely amazing time to visit as we are getting a LOT of snow this year (record-setting in some places) However, keep in mind that if you do come in March the road to get down to Kings Canyon might be closed still due to snow/ice. It usually opens in March or April depending on the snow levels. The Cedar Grove area is definitely a good place to be centrally located to head to both Kings Canyon (the actual Canyon) and the main areas of Sequoia. They're both probably about 45 mins to an hour away from Cedar Grove. I would say Princess Campground might be one of your best bets. It is a cool campground set on a giant meadow. It's fairly close to Cedar Grove (15-20 mins maybe) and its also close to Hume Lake, which is a beautiful little lake there with lots of amenities (pizza, burgers, ice cream, kayaking, paddle boarding etc.) It's a bit farther to get to Sequoia from there but it's a great spot. No matter where you stay there, you will be surrounded by beauty! There are a lot of fun little hikes off the General's Highway as well (which connects KC and Sequoia) Hope this helped, if you have any more questions just ask! I love talking about this stuff as I have been hiking the Sierras for 30 years

It’s too bad you weren’t able to get to Grant Grove. We camped there every summer growing up. There are some amazing trails in and around that area as well as a nice general store & visitors center. Maybe next time if it hasn’t burned to the ground. Safe Travels Amigos !

Loved Sequoia. Sad to see what that park has went through. When we were there, we even heard that fire is required for the cones to expand and the seeds to germinate???

Yes, the trees need fire, but this one was really bad and did more damage than most unfortunately.
@kristenz.82873 жыл бұрын
Yes true. They need fires to reproduce, but if the fire is TOO HOT, the tree and cones are destroyed. Problem is so many of the recent fires are INCREDIBLY HOT. This is something that has changed in the last couple decades.

Loved it! We took our kids there ~25 years ago. They still remember! It’s hard to capture on camera but you did great!

The Sequoias and Red Woods are definitely very hard to capture in photographs and on film to actually get the feeling of what it is like to stand next to them. Glad you guys and your kids were able to see it for yourselves!

When my mother's father (my grandpa) visited Sequoia National Park when he completed his time in the US Army in the late 1920's, he brought back to his home in South Dakota (family farm, near Bowdle), a living burl (removed from a Giant Sequoia tree) that he bought at the park's Gift Shop. Over a period of years of indoor nurturing, the burl sprouted a sapling and when it grew large enough, my grandpa planted it on the family farm. While I've never visited my grandpa's family farm myself, my mom and her brother spent summers there thru their teen years and both can attest to the Giant Sequoia growing there. The farm is still in the family and the sequoia, while young, is still there. To the best of my knowledge, it's the only Sequoiadendron Giganteum growing in a non-botanical setting anywhere in the USA east of the continental divide...

We've always love the big Sequoia's! Hate when there's fires in and around all the amazing land causing destruction. Donuts are good any time of the day 😊......even better when climbing high altitudes.....life is good🙏

So sad for the damage that has been done by this fire, but so thankful for those who have so bravely fought to protect as much of the forest as they could. And donuts are definitely good at ALL times of the day! 😉

Corey, That place where you stopped where the rock garden is below (I think where you turned around) is technically outside of the NP so my hubby was able to fly his drone! He was so happy. And yes he’s a certified drone pilot and checked for permission to fly. 😊 I know you had had a long day by that point, but if you drove further you’d be back in Kings Canyon and the road actually ends about 45 minutes further. It’s a long drive but very scenic with river alongside and a waterfall near the end. There’s also an ice cream shack that a lot of people stop at (but we didn’t). 😊

There is a lot of National Forest land up there were you can fly. Glad he was able to find a good spot! It had been a long day and so much of what is up in Kings Canyon was closed (like the caves) so we called it and headed home. We will be back SOMEDAY! Thanks for watching!

@@FindingOurSomeday I need to get back over to Libby Mt by where the swinging bridge is at. There is a small area called Ross Creek Cedar Forest. There are some massive cedar trees. Sadly a forest fire went through 2 years ago, so I'm not sure what it looks like now.
