Incredible job with the air flow. It's pretty cool that your can dial in the frequency on the make up air, to perfectly account for the spray booth air. All looks great. Nice work.

Great explanation. I've spent a lot of time at that Lockheed Palmdale facility and I laughed when I heard the train whistle when you were doing your intro. I can't count the number of times I've been stuck at that crossings waiting for a train!

These are the kind of videos I like. Really good description of the electronics. I was a bit surprised to see the wood framing in the roof and curbs of that building though.

Certainly there is a lot of computational logic within the VFD, but it makes me happy to see some hardwired logic in the way things are hooked up. Nice job.

Worked on & wired drives for 30 years and seldom used a VFD to control more then 1 motor. great for feeding several conveyors on a packaging line. Got called out to an ambulitory care center where cheap skates had 1 drive controlling 4 10 HP motors that feed halve the building and 2 OR'S. When 1 motor shorted out 2 different maintenance guys went up & just reset overload block. Was down for almost 2 days. All they had to do was isolate this motor by removing 3 motor leads and letting the 3 remaining fans . Best thing they save a ton of energy when running at reduced speeds and along with a 10 second or longer ramp up easier on equipment.

Totally enjoyed your explanation of how you wired your system. I worked for lots of chemical plants around Houston and designed all kinds of motor control and instrumentation. Also worked for companies building control rooms for many different industries. Even built two robotic control centers for Rolls Royce once. That was a fun project.

Great video Stan, I really appreciate the thought put in to the logic for this application, in a word, it's brilliant. Years ago I worked for an industrial machine manufacturer, there were a few instances I had to integrate a new machine control in to an exsisting one using more than simple interlocks, needless to say it could get weird. Looking back I wish I had someone like you to brainstorm with, while I did eventually satisfy the client I certainly could have used another sharp person that was on the same wave length dealing with an "as built" situation.

Growing up in West Texas we had swamp coolers. They were great as long as the humidity was low. Now that I have lived with refrigerated cooling, I never want to go back to those things.

Hey boss, is there any sensing of flow degradation due to filter clogging on the intake or exhaust air that will have adverse effect on air balance? I know it was always a concern in the nuclear buildings that I worked in years ago for obvious reasons. Thanks for sharing your work. Regards/greg
@ShadonHKW
@ShadonHKW 4 жыл бұрын
Its not that critical here, the building is not sealed up that tight. If it was fully sealed, then a 4-20 Ma modulating control would be in order, along with pressure sensing equipment.

How well does the make up filters handle the extra moister from the coolers? Seems they would saturate and plug quickly?? Also seems they would or might drip??? I am no expert but grew up on swamp coolers. The moister was crazy!

I was doing multi motors on one VFD 20 years ago. 5 hp up to 20 hp. These were in an egg laying facility. We were controlling ventilation in the houses, egg flow to the grader/s thru one desk top computer for up to 2.2 million birds. I retired from that job 11 years ago. I also did backup gensets up to 800 kw.

Oh yea,, very well shown and explained Stan,,,Does the roof top cooling filters require filtered are distilled water, to give longer life to the filter?? During my years as PM on the construction team, most city water supply had high levels of chlorine and filer life was an issues and cost. The New Orleans plant was one that gave the maintenance crews fits due to, a non filtration system specified in the design. That was back in 1998, and left Coke Cola ECI, in 2001, so don't know if they ever corrected the issue. Just a question, and can you shed some light? Bear.

Very high mineral content here, they will need regular de-scaling, inline filters would help, but not solve the problem. No replacement for regular maintenance.

Swamp cooler media during the 1960s were batts of "excelsior", which might have been wood shavings but definitely organic. What's the media in those modern coolers made of?
@ShadonHKW
@ShadonHKW 4 жыл бұрын
Feels like a treated cardboard to me, it "wets" very easily and the standard media is 12" thick in a honeycomb pattern, it diffuses the air and creates thermal transfer better than the old style pads.
@jjbode1
@jjbode1 4 жыл бұрын
@@ShadonHKW That's at least 3 times the old batt thickness. The old batts weren't enough for the heat in Phoenix; we'd often pin wet rags to the duct registers to help, but nothing was good enough so I eventually moved to the upper left corner of the left coast.

Hi Stan, One question I want to ask you is about running multiple 3-phase loads on a VFD in a workshop environment. Could you have a 10hp VFD in a workshop and run a 5hp Bridgeport mill and run a 2hp lathe? In my application I'm really only needing 60hz, so speed control isn't as important as single phase to three phase conversion. If the VFD is rated to run loads of up to 10hp, will it likely handle switching on and off smaller three phase motors in a shop environment?
@ShadonHKW
@ShadonHKW 4 жыл бұрын
2 things to watch out for, first is overload protection for the individual motors, second and probably the most important is the motors need to be turned on and off via the VFD, not by the secondary switchgear downstream of the VFD, removing or applying a load to a VFD that is already up and running @ target speed will slowly chisel away at the DC buss.

Someone help mo. We have 1unit altivar 38 running two vibrator motors at the same time. When we replaced the control card of vfd and start the VFD, it wont reach the speed setpoint, the speed setpoint is 955RPM and the actual speed is only 243RPM. But, if We run only 1motor it will reach the setpoint speed, then we run the another motor, it will reach the setpoint speed. It means they cannot run at the same time, you need to run one by one. Before it runs at the same time. How to solve this problem??

Hi Stan, cool configuration. Is it common that the cheap (e.g. chinese) VFD's and other more expensive VFD's regularly come with this many programmable control inputs and output relays? Or does one need to get into detailed specs to select that many dependencies? I notice that on swamp cooler startup it appears to frequency ramp up for a slow start. Is this what is happening, and if so, what happened to the motor load when you instantly jump to 55 Hz for 4 coolers? thanks
@ShadonHKW
@ShadonHKW 4 жыл бұрын
There is energy savings involved by doing a ramped start, I always add at least 10 seconds. It's a feature, why not use it?
@ehamster
@ehamster 4 жыл бұрын
Usually on a VFD if you set the ramp time to zero it will ramp as fast as it can whilst not exceeding the max current set on the drive. (It will often allow a short period exceeding max current, which can also be set)
@Peter-V_00
@Peter-V_00 4 жыл бұрын
@@ehamster Some VFD's don't function with multi motors as they do with single, that is, they can be finicky enough to read the no ramp start as a fault if any one of the loads flinches during starting.

Its just a small coil that snaps on to a manual motor starter, apply power = starter trips off.
