Your video is ultra cool but actually I read about this technique nearly 40 years ago. It is taught to Russian Spetsnaz special forces troops for getting off of moving trains. I remember reading about it and finding it fascinating, but I have never seen it in action before. Your video brought it to life. Thanks. I think you can imagine such a technique taught to military forces would be a tremendous asset.
@DANIELMABUSE13 күн бұрын
I guess it would have to be a pretty slow moving train.
@Brainth_17807 күн бұрын
@@DANIELMABUSE my guess is the real technique includes a way to roll after hitting the ground. It still feels incredibly useful to deduct a good 15+ km/h of speed from whatever vehicle your jumping off of… as long as you know how to hit the ground correctly after that.
@DANIELMABUSE6 күн бұрын
@@Brainth_1780 I did think of this but I was also wondering what type of train would enable you to get a meaningful running start. Are they running on the roof? In that case I feel the fall is likely to be a pretty big deal and they might prefer to get closer to the ground. Do they have a special train with a running track at the end? It seems to me this is going to be useful only in some very special circumstances.

I don't think you CAN jump in freefall. I am sure there is a better explanation than this, and I am also sure the answer is no. I just replied to see if anybody actually does come up with the right explanation. But I think it has to do with momentum. Depending on how far the elevator falls, you need several times G to accelerate yourself in the opposite direction of G earth's gravity.

He's going like 8-10 mph. I've done worse as a child lmao. Learning how to land while falling 10 ft without padding is a skill I learned because I would launch myself out of a swing at a playground higher than the swing set itself. Never injured or broke an ankle or leg over the hundreds of times I've done it. Played with fire, did tumbling and stunts as a kid like a stuntman, and willingly threw myself into situations that had a high chance for failure or injury, mainly in the name of physics and experimentation. This is something pretty much everybody can replicate, especially if the car/truck is going like 5 mph. I would volunteer (as I'm miles more athletic and more willing to take a beating) to go way faster, like 15-20 mph, but maybe not over a parking lot lol. About 50 years ago, the old cars of the A line of Buenos Aires metro used to release the doors before it had completely stopped at the station. The pneumatic system had been retrofitted to the old cars decades ago and it only pushed the doors closed and kept them closed while it run but it didn't open the doors, it just released them for you to open them, as needed. As I said the system was old and it wasn't fast so the conductor released the doors way before it had stopped, because it took a while for the air in the cylinders to escape and that would mean the train would have to stay at the station a few seconds longer. The safety was of no concern back in those days, that is the way it was. Young as I was I did as many others did, I jumped out before a complete stop, just for the thrills. My technique was to keep pulling the door open until the pressure dropped low enough so that I could open it, then I grabbed the front edge of the door frame and, while facing forward, when I dared, I'd push myself hard backwards (instead of running backwards as you did, since there was no space to do so) so that my forward speed was greatly reduced. I would still carry some forward momentum so I would land and take a couple of steps to completely slow me down, but I consistently did much better than my buddies who jumped out perpendicular or those that jumped forward, adding their own speed to that of the train car.

1:16 As a person who has jumped out of a moving van as well as trains; I can tell you the answer is yes, you can. But the faster the train is going, the harder you have to kick off the train. If you can only jump at 10 mph, then you can ONLY jump off a train at that speed and land still. P.S. Once you land, it feels VERY strange. As all your life your body/brain knows running and jumping leads to you needing to dampen your inertia. But in this case, it doesn't happen. It causes a similar jarring feeling to being in a car accident.

I thought about it a lot and always imagined that it would just stall, and fall to the ground, from the moment he released the pitch. So even if you can not match the speed of a vehicle moving, -in the remote case of an emergency- it would always be better to jump -if possible- to the opposite direction of the movement of the vehicle, right? Edit: Now I'm curious about jumping from a moving vehicle but without running, more like, ducking on the edge, leaning forward and jumping diagonally, almost horizontally, what is the speed of a human jump? Also we're on a claimed non inertial spinning reference frame in which things not attached in the inertial reference frame appear to drift 15 degrees per hour. Nothing appears to drift at 15 degrees per hour once leaving the non inertial spinning reference frame. Can anyone name one thing in nature that does? Coriolis deflection.
