March in 1948 Dad took this 6 year old in his '37 Chevy coupe to the Stewartstown Railroad station to pick up our chicks. Too far out in the Pennsylvania countryside for a phone the hatchery had sent him a postcard the week prior of their arrival date. They were shipped in cardboard cartons with a slipover lid, excelsior lined the bottom. Soon home to their coal fired Buckeye stove warmed brooder house.

My Granddady raised poled herfords. You are right about their temperament. We had a big bull call him curly bill. I was as young as Kali and would sit up on him while he ate. And the quality beef, I personally think, is better than black angus. There is nothing better than being able to raise food for the family. Excellent quality of life for sure. Seedlings are looking fabulous, by the way. I am looking forward to planting season. 😊

Get your shovels ready! It’s heading your way. Wish Grammy a speedy recovery! Potting on some seedlings also. Just when I think I’m caught up there is another flat. Those hot peppers take their time and some are surprising me. They all of a sudden appear when I’ve wrote them off. The new Megatron jalapeño is a lot vigorous grower and hope it slows down a bit because we are a ways off to planting out. Cold now and soon to be snowy for a day or so, but Woo Hoo! Next Monday back to60s and hope it stays. Hope the fruit out there doesn’t get froze-difficult weather.

Suggestion: A slow build over time. Get rid of the mud around buildings so that skid loaders and vehicles can move easily.l Start laying large stone/rocks 3_-4" - 6" down along with french drains. Small sections at a time so it doesn't get too costly. Top off with smaller stone/gravel. Heck, if you want to go ancient (Roman) top it with flagstone! Just kidding.....

The USDA reports the single most profitable farm in all of the US is a itty bitty greenhouse operation in Berkeley, Ca. In town. It consists of just a tick over 1 acre. They grow exotic lettices for high end San Francisco restaurants. $ per acre they are the most profitable. !

We have chicks delivered via the post-office but the ones that stay on our homestead (layers), we go get. They're COLD & can't keep themselves warm. They need to stay about 90 degrees (scaling down 5° a week), and I imprint them as soon as they're hatched. Those chirps are calls for Momma. They're actually distress calls. So I comfort them with just pressing my warm hand on their backs slightly. (Picking them up adds to their stress.) We also supply Gro-gel (vitamin/water) immediately to help them get a kick start. We don't medicate them but vitamins are great for a healthy beginning.
