51-52 8N, just like mine! Side distributor makes life so much easier. Before you go trying to start it, you'll need to prime the oil system by pulling the 15/16" plug out of the front timing cover, then pour a couple cups of oil into it. They have a tendency to lose prime and not build oil pressure if they're stored for a long time. Super fun machines to use and very simple to fix. I'd be happy to help with whatever other info you need. Good luck, guys!
@williamhouk688025 күн бұрын
I've had several of these 8N Fords, and 52' is the only year that had the RPM TACH on the lower right side of the dash. All others had none. If there's no over run bearings on that PTO shaft going to that mower, GET ONE! With out an over run bearing, say your mowing in any gear and you want to stop, you depress the peddle, the tractor will keep moving until the mower stops rotation. The over run bearing will let you stop on a dime and the mower will spin till it runs out of energy. Very handy unit!
@user-jg6bd7se8u10 ай бұрын
The barn exterior was constructed that way purposely. Air flow. Corn will rot real bad with no air. Plus animals poop. Pew. The white insulators on the horse barn are for fence. Keeps the horse from scratching on the tin roof. The brown insulators are power. They still did that in the 60s for sure. 1800s youd see dowel pin construction. Beams will be flat on ome side, round on the other. Square nails are after the wood dowels. Round nails are newest. Really neat, you guys are dreamers and so am I! ❤
@harriettanthony735210 ай бұрын
Good construction details OP, and they are regional. NO barn would last in New England built the way this one is. There are 04 basic metal nail types, the ones I see in the barn are from 1890 on to the wire nails we know now. The saw marks on the planking will also give you an age of the barn idea. From just a video view, I 'd date the barn to early 20th Century. IF the frame work of the barn is viable, I would add a concrete floor under the whole structure and frost walls and set the whole barn down on it. THEN do the re construction. Derek has a HUGE job ahead, if he goes that route. But a new barn is a HUGE $$$$ to build.

That tractor is an 8N not a 9N, as evidenced by the distributor and 4 speed trans. 9N's had a 3 speed trans and the distributor bolted directly to the timing cover with the coil attached directly to the distributor. Also, most, if not all, Sherman over/under drives were actually three speed units. Find neutral (between under drive and over drive), then wiggle the lever out about a half inch and push or pull into direct drive.
@rogercochranBR54910 ай бұрын
Also a 9N the left brake on the left and the right brake on the right..This one has both brakes on the right like an 8N.
@stevemiller921110 ай бұрын
You are right, it is a 8N. A quick give away is the splined hubs on the rear axles. As far as the distributor, while all the 9N's had the front mount distributor, the earlier 8N's also used the front mount.
@timothykeith13679 ай бұрын
Most Sherman auxiliary transmissions allow the N to go faster, the weakness is the ground speed is generally too fast for many modern implements. The N are good for mowing, plowing, pulling a wagon - and plenty of nastalgia. Lack of live PTO, but a sweet tractor.

More than likely, that barn and any other older building is long leaf pine. The south, from virginia thru east tx was covered in long leaf. Termites don't like it because its dense and sap ritch, unlike lob lollys. However, it takes 200 years to mature. Lob Lollys take 20 years to produce 4x4s. Therefore, when longleaf was logged out, they replanted the quick growing loblolly. I have a house in central tx built in 1900 that is all longleaf and mexican cypress. All the old houses that ive worked on in tx are the same, almost all longleaf. Its absolutely fantastic stuff

Derek, you should take a small screwdriver and poke around the beams and posts especially by grade. If it's rock solid your early 1900's lumber is like iron compared to today's hybrid pine. I would save the structure in that case. If you can push the screwdriver in and make it stick demolish it. If some is soft, some is hard it's your call. That old nominal lumber is probably oak. Good luck, stay humble. Maybe we'll cross paths one day.

Nothing more satisfying than rehabing an old homestead, my wife and I have been doing it for the past 4 years. A lot of time spent walking around and planning projects, its really become our hobby.. best of luck, looks like a beautiful place oozing with history and tons of potential. Looking forward to seeing the progress of it.

Definitely do a will it run tractor episode! Get the other implements and you can farm the whole place with that tractor. And you should do some episodes of planting corn etc. The tractor barn you should patch up, or if you decide to take it down then look at building codes you might want to keep one wall standing as a remodel project and save on the permit encumbrances. Perhaps turn that tractor shed (I see a corn crib) could be an AirBNB Barn-do-minium! ... those floor lifts and holes are woodchucks. There is likely a whole army of them dug in for battle around those buildings.
@moparman19629 ай бұрын
We like it...take us along as you clean it up and sort through everything and make decisions on what to do with the buildings and materials. It's a cool property with a lot of history and nostalgia...a lot of us who watch VGG like history, heritage, antiques, old machinery, carpentry and so on...and people like Derek, Jessica and their sons doing stuff like that, it's good ol' get 'er done being an American in the country stuff, salt of the Earth.

Thurston Flye lived there years ago and his housed burned around 2000.
@papatomsthoughts10 ай бұрын
From what I see, tear down the one end of barn that is partially down already and rebuild the good side, fix roof, add siding, you have enough of materials to do this. That would make a great old storage shed for tractors and equipment. What about the other property you got last year and was mowing?
@CaptCutlass8 ай бұрын
Old school porcelain 'Knobs' for Knob and Tube wiring. I bet that barn may even have the Porcelain Tubes installed in holes that were drilled through the wood to run electricity inside. Cool property man!

Just so a feller knows that should be a sherman combi transmission based on the shifter...so its both a step up and step down...gives you 12 total gears to grind. handle forward is low range...back is high and for normal...put it in the neutral (middle) and it pulls out a tad from the case and then back and it does no change to the ford gears, its a pass thru.

That old Ford is an 8N you can tell by the small rear wheel lug pattern and that both brake pedals are on the right side! That’s a sweet little tractor especially With the Sherman!!
@jrs813010 ай бұрын
Correct, and that Sherman could very easily be a high low and standard, making it 12 gears

Check the quad map for the area. They are good about showing details like waterbodies and structures. - you should find an old timer land surveyor in the area who still has old paper maps. Not sure how it works in Tn, but in Louisiana, the Tax Assessors would have something called a Tobin map, that may be helpful.

I love exploration of old places like these, investigating little things that tell the history of a place. There's just something fun about exploring the effects of time on the stuff people have built, and how much of their story remains in it after they're gone from it. This was fun, and I look forward to seeing more!

Great place you have! I’d demolish that old barn and put up a huge concrete floored , secure and dry car storage building. You could use some of the barn wood and steel panels from the barn to make a TRIBUTE WALL to the barn which once stood there. Best wishes to you and your family. You deserve everything you have.

4:20 What's even cooler about your 8N is that the Sherman (by how the shifter looks) seems to be a Step-up and Step-down combination. The normal Sherman was a step up ( 4 higher gears). Others were a step-down (an extra 4 lower gears.) The Sherman combination has both, push it forward for higher gears, and then pull it back for the extra lower gears. Your 8N is a 12 speed!!
