1:01:13 If I recall correctly, this is because it's a framebuffer effect--the game is actually taking a picture of the screen before you pause. This is why it takes longer on some emulators, including Nintendo's official ones. This is also why on some emulators if you're playing on high resolution, the screen suddenly gets pixellated as you pause, as in those cases, the framebuffer is still being emulated at 240p, so the picture of the game in the background is also 240p.

Speaking of YiiK, I think he should do some re-visit of that game since the game receive some patches that somewhat fix the story by giving you an option to making Alex's monologue less frequent or mute him entirely (which is hilarious for replay), as well as freshly alter the story a little and even add a new ending to combat that underwhelming ending from Legacy version. Gameplay still a total slog, though. I'm not sure that they fixed that too since I don't wanna bought the game to find out.

@@nomoon327 Yeah, that's a good point. Maybe let them finish what they're doing before re-review the game. Honestly, I do wanna give a devs credit for trying fixing the game's problem entirely instead of keep it the way it is. Though, the damage has been done, and I bet they can recover from it.

1:46:36 The best fan theory I've read for why Navi flies away at the end has to do with the healing fairies you can catch in a bottle. The theory is that once a fairy fulfills its purpose, it ceases to exist. The healing fairies disappear as soon as they heal Link. The Kokiri's fairies always stay with the Kokiri because they're assigned companions and Kokiris never die unless they leave the woods. But Link isn't a Kokiri, and the Deku Tree only sends Navi to Link to help him fulfill his destiny by defeating Ganon. Once Link has done that, Navi's purpose has been fulfilled. Why does she fly away after Zelda sends him back to his childhood? Because she's about to vanish and doesn't want Link to see her go. It's why Link never finds her during his search before (and presumably after) Majora's Mask: she died.

1:41:29 The prototype overdump from this January included an old dump of the entire game's script that explained what each of those spells were. The Spirit spell let you control Navi, the Light spell illuminated dark areas and damaged enemies, and the Shadow spell functioned like Nayru's Love in the final game, only it made you invisible to enemies instead of just invulnerable. The Wind (became Forest medallion) spell became Farore's Wind, the Fire spell became Din's Fire, and the Ice (became Water medallion) spell just froze enemies in the vicinity with a blast of ice similar to the fire medallion/Din's Fire. Among other beta elements, these were fully implemented in the '97 Spaceworld Restoration romhack of Ocarina of Time. Highly recommend checking it out, they also show off the cut maps actually populated with enemies and objects, with at least some degree of accuracy.

Thanks the review Running Shine! I gotta say the bit at 1:40:15 about how art may not end up exactly how you want it to but you shouldn't be discouraged by that, as that's part of the process really got to me. I recently picked up drawing as a hobby and I ended up psyching myself out of drawing early on because it didn't end up how I wanted it to. So when you then said "As long as you put your heart into it you will have something special" Really helped out especially since I've been working on just enjoying the process and experimenting and getting better. So all in all thank you for the inspiration!

1:27:49 well, funny thing... Navi WAS supposed to be one of Link's harem according to an old Miyamoto interview during OoT's development: Fanimaga 64 Shigeru Miyamoto Interview - November 26th, 1997 Q: Does Link have a girlfriend? Miyamoto: If it was Princess Zelda, it would be great. However, this time Navi [the fairy] is jealous of Zelda. So within the story, Navi feels something for Link.

I always loved the ending of OoT. Its kind of sad because Link is never really rewarded for his efforts in a traditional way. In the child timeline, he has to redo all of his relationships (with the closest navi parting ways for good) and has to live with disconnect of being a hardened warrior in a child’s body. The King and Zelda take the credit for stopping Ganon. And then when he’s an adult he has nothing. All the sages are gone, The world is in ruin, its the bad timeline so Malon is into incest, the Gerudos start protesting in Minnesota.

Another certified Running Shine banger. One thing I want to bring up is the fake TV rip at 1:14:00 with the rating bug. I'm a huge sucker for this shit, I've done an assload of autistic research looking at different TV rips to get the look perfect. So many KZbinrs make small mistakes about them or just don't give a shit but this one REALLY nailed it! The rating's at the exact spot, it's the right size, it's there for 15 seconds which on a first watch I thought it went on for too long but no it's the right length! Like I could be really nitpicky and say that there could have been a frame or two of the rating fading in and out but for a dumb joke in an Ocarina of Time video it goes above the call of duty. I feel like somebody could make a good video essay on how to write video essays with good comedic timing by using this video essay as a subject. It really feels like there's a good amount of thought put into when to put in a funny segue and how long it should be without getting annoying. The sudden conversion from SA2 as a comparison to just flat out reviewing it for a little while was golden. Not exactly a point about the writing, but Mello's Jesse Ventura impression was so good that I didn't realise it was all him until he said "I've been governor". This game has always been really special to me, it was one of the first games my dad and I played together and he renamed Link to Stinky. He basically beat the game for me but it was a lot of fun, me just running around doing goofy things in the game until he eventually showed my how to beat Gannondorf and let me do it. I'll always miss my dad but I'll never forget the memories I shared with him on this game.

I wish my dad was like that. He used to ban me from playing videogames and disconnect the wifi so I couldn't play games on my computer (despite using it to look up animation tutorials). the pause menu IS a 3D square that wraps around the camera, and the sprites on it are also flat 3d objects, coupled with the fact that the game logic doesn't quite pause, as much as the game renders a still of the gameplay in real time so it can blur it out for the pause menu to look cool.

love the behind the scenes/development cutaways the explain some of the design decisions and content that didn't make it in. plans for the medallions to be more than plot macguffins and give link more abilities makes a lot of sense in retrospect. i'm glad they eventually got to do that in BotW with champion abilities, because the OOT medallions not doing anything annoyed me as a kid. "saria awoke as a sage and added her power to yours!" no, she didn't. she gave me was a chuck e cheese token. the real treasure was the dollar store bow and arrow i found in a box along the way. i felt bad that link's childhood friend had to fuck off to the afterlife forever to pray about trees, even if her entire personality was looking like broccoli. after i spent ten confusing minutes trying to equip the medallion and see what power i got, only to realize i'd been gypped, i changed my mind. enjoy your stay in the fountain dimension
@Henskelion
@Henskelion 3 жыл бұрын
There's a bit of a smoking gun of evidence for the medallions originally granting Link real powers that was left in the final game; in the entrance to the Shadow Temple, where there's the platform that you stand on in the middle of the room to cast Din's Fire and ignite all the torches, the platform you stand on has the faint icon of the Fire Temple medallion. It's easy to speculate from there that originally, the Fire Medallion would have given you the Din's Fire ability, but they just later changed this to making Din's Fire its own thing.

Oh man, this review has been my most anticipated review of the decade. I played OoT a ton on the GameCube when I was a kid. It absolutely terrified me no matter what. A constant feeling of unease and mystery seemed to fill every inch of the game. It was a fantasy world that seemed entirely *alien* to me as a kid and it scared me. It may have impacted my view of the world. New discoveries and worlds won't be filled with magic and mystery but with demons, and re-deads. Even as an adult the sudden shift in Castle town from "The only place that doesn't scare me" to "Pants-shittingly terrifying" still gives me the shivers. Even creepier, until you go to Kakariko Village, it seems like everyone is dead and is now trying to eat you. This was made even more upsetting when we played Majora's Mask, which has the same lesson to learn. New places are here to ruin your life and are filled with nightmares. This is why I love Zelda to this day though. Hyrule always feels completely alien to me. This isn't just "Fancy 1200s Europe" or "Magical Sengoku Jidai", it's Hyrule. Twilight Princess does this the best to me, as it also introduces a hellish alternate reality that is full of corrupted creatures who want to invade and bring twilight to the world. It's amazing. I love that you talk about the music, because it is something that I never even realized. It is always so atmospheric and helped scare the crap out of me as a kid.

Fun fact: the forest temple was recently found out to actually be the very first dungeon created for the game. Originally when oot was supposed to take place entirely in a castle, it was going to actually be a castle, most likely hyrule castle and feature portals to seamlessly warp from one room to another, a decade before portal created it. That's why the forest temple seems to be such a jump in level design.

A really cool detail of Jabu Jabu's Belly is that it has that wobbly screen effect a lot of games have for water levels, where the picture subtly squashes and stretches a bit.
