Forgotten land did a pretty good job at making kirby 3d. So much much so that it feels like a standard kirby game. A lot of the gameplay elements and game/stage design seem very carefully considered and implemented. It seems you had the right idea about the camera, since you can't change its position, but you can slightly change the angle.

Great game, the comfiness was pretty phenomenal even amongst the largely comfy library of the N64. This game, Paper Mario and Bomberman 64: Second Attack were my favourites games on the console, a whole lot of loving detail was put into each of them. The little multiplayer games in Crystal Shards were great too, especially that one where you coloured the tiles to make other players fall to their grisly deaths.

Squeak Squad/Mouse Attack. You could unlock the ability to combine Sword with Fire, Freeze and Spark. You can also combine Bomb with Freeze and Spark. Sadly there aren't anything other combos, which sucks since it's basically just the bog standard fantasy magic trifecta in either melee or ranged form. Something kind of weird about this game is how a handful of enemies/designs look similar to some Evangelion monsters, like how the desert cube ship looks like Ramiel, and 02 reminds me a lot of Sahaquiel. I know this seems like a stretch, but I have a bit of evidence that it was intentional: in beta screenshots and footage of the game, you can see that the attack for the double spike power (Swiss Army Kirby, according to the wiki) was actually different. In this version, one of the spiky things Kirby attacks with is the Spear of Longinus from Evangelion. However, in the final game (maybe for copyright reasons), the Spear was removed and replaced with a cactus. EDIT: I forgot, there's another one as well, a black spider-like enemy called Mariel, whose appearance and name closely resembles Matarael.

This came out super good man! You've got yourself something super solid here and I hope to see a lot more! If you don't mind, I do have a criticism though: you went from using reaction images (mainly from Spongebob) early on the review and then stopped halfway. While in the second half you spoke more candidly and used your own jokes, which came off as more genuine to me. I think that more than half of what sold me on this was your personality which really came out later and I feel that if you stuck with this, it would create a genuinely more interesting presentation. Good luck man, and I hope to see more from you!
@RunningShine7 жыл бұрын
Never have a problem with criticism! I agree, it's not very natural for me to talk about history stuff, especially during this review as it was my first attempt. With the video I'm making now I'm trying to cut down on the google images and using more downloaded clips as it'll fit the video format better and make the sections flow much better. I think one of the biggest issues I have is that I have a tough time figuring out how to start and end videos. It's something I am getting better at with practice but it's still going to take a bit before I can really write some good stuff for those parts and feel comfortable with it. Thanks for the comment!
@CooliusCaesar7 жыл бұрын
Running Shine That's super good to hear, man! I subbed so I'll be seeing it when it comes out! And as far as the opening and closing of videos go, I too am trying to figure that stuff out myself... It really does seem to just come with experience does it?
@RunningShine7 жыл бұрын
Not sure how much I can say as I've only made a couple videos, but along with experience I think it's important to really think of ways to improve scripts and editing so that the video can flow better. Try to experiment also with editing and writing styles, even if it doesn't work out at least you'll probably learn something important from it.

I do honestly think you could make a Kirby game in 3D, but...it would have to be pretty wildly different from the 2D games. Probably enough that it wouldn't feel like Kirby anymore, which does defeat most of the point. Basically all of the iconic abilities would have to be reworked, and the overall level design philosophy, and everything and it's...honestly probably not worth it. There's nothing wrong with being in 2D, and changing things just for the sake of trying to be different is one of Nintendo's biggest weaknesses imo. For every really innovative game they put out, there's several that just come out half-baked.

Everyone and their mother is going to make a comment on how Forgotten Lands nailed 3D Kirby, but the rant still works at the time. FL borrows a lot from the Mario 3D land and Galaxy formula which weren't developed until a decade after The Crystal Shards. So yeah the rant is a touch dated by saying Kirby will NEVER work with a Z axis, it still relevant given the context of the time period in which the game was developed in.
@SenpaiMD2 жыл бұрын
Not to mention that a 3D kirby game has been prototype'd either inhouse (Kirby Air Ride) or through mini-games (Triple Deluxe) and both times they still don't feel quite right.
@321cheeseman2 жыл бұрын
No, it really doesn't work, because the rant is talking about the concept of 3D Kirby in general, not just about the time Crystal Shards was made, and the only argument given against the concept ever working is that the powers wouldn't translate to 3D (which like... you just change how they work...? or make new abilities like they do in every 2D game anyway?). Even well before the announcement of Forgotten Lands it wasn't a convincing argument at all. Plus even for Crystal Shards' time, the right people with the right ideas could have made it work. It almost certainly wouldn't be the same as what we ultimately got, but the concept was never even remotely unworkable, regardless whether they experimented in-house a couple times and weren't satisfied. I mean, do you really think something akin to Bomberman 64 or Bomberman Hero or Crash Bandicoot but with Kirby was impossible for the time (I'm thinking mainly in terms of camera and progression here, and all of these predate Crystal Shards by at least two years)? You really can't imagine how any of those could have been good, let alone any number of other gameplay possibilities? It's almost always a bad idea to say that some very broad concept for a piece of media is impossible to do well, and I really don't understand why you'd feel the need to defend that. Running Shine can make a mistake. Accept it. It will be okay.
@deadliestvice5356 Жыл бұрын
Air Ride was a great example of the many ways a Kirby game can work in 3D. They took the easy-going nature of Kirby and translated it into a racing game, with some of the abilities being carried over, only this time running on a timer.

I've watched this video before, but I just realized something: are the gameplay segments between tangents supposed to be dhort breaks? Like, instead of packing the video full of dense chatting, you break it up into sections with a bit of gameplay, allowing the viewers to collect themselves before moving on. I like the idea a lot, and I hope you experiment with it more, but I can see why it was kinda phased out in this blatant use of the concept. It was kind of confusing to me on a first watch, because I thought you were trying to show me some kind of joke in the gameplay, but it was just kinda... gameplay. But I do often think videos can be pretty dense without a break, especially if the narrator has a monotone voice (you don't, but I'm just saying as an example).
@RunningShine3 жыл бұрын
I honestly don’t know why I stopped doing this. I use straight gameplay footage a bit for the YIIK video to help transition into different environments and keep things understandable, but I’ve stopped using it as a way to show off more of the game and give the viewer a break from me. Maybe that’s because I’ve become a bit obsessed with making sure the videos aren’t wasting any time, but if I’m already going to be making the videos more long form, I might as well have some uninterrupted gameplay now and then to give the viewer a breather from the commentary, and help immerse them more into the atmosphere of the game. There’s definitely some intended humor going on with the clips I used, the ones of Kirby falling head first into a big spike and being totally fine and messing up the spring miniboss while it does nothing to fight back still crack me up, but that’s probably just because I’m a dummy and think everything is funny. Looking back, I think I might have subconsciously picked this up from Mark Bussler’s Classic Game Room reviews, Mark would often talk for a bit, play some gameplay footage, and then come in with more commentary. It let things breathe a bit more and gave his reviews a really cozy atmosphere. He seems to have stopped doing videos after trying to shift to doing reviews on art supplies and comic books, all of which were very low effort and recorded with his phone. I’m not really sure what he was trying to accomplish with those and it’s sad to see him retire, but he made a lot of great videos from 2008 to 2015 that are still available and I recommend checking them out, especially the hardware reviews. He even has archives of a really old review show he did with his roommate called “The Game Room” that they did in the late 90’s, and they’re also surprisingly good. Thanks so much for the comment!
@Legoluigi263 жыл бұрын
@@RunningShine Now that you mention it, I do get CGR vibes from your videos. It's especially noticable in the editing and the cadence of the writing. You also share that thing where you talk for like three minutes about a specific aspect of the game in depth. The difference is that CGR reviews were usually about five minutes long, so I personally always left the video unsatisfied (mind you, this was in 2013, long before everyone was accustomed to cheapo KZbinrs DeviantArt inflating their content to meet an arbitrary 10 minute mark to please Le Algorithm). Since RunningShine videos are as long as they need to be, your specifics mesh with the broader review and work together to tell a complete story about the game in question. Also I find you guys a lot funnier.
@Legoluigi263 жыл бұрын
Also, I really hate being so mean to Classic Game Room, it pioneered online video game content and I respect it and owe a lot to it. That said, it might just be the zoomer's signature low attention span, but CGR's gameplay breaks were always too frequent and long to the point where it annoyed me.
