Underground might've of had a 'alright' story but as a kid back then playing this game had taught me the difference between 'desire' and 'passion'. Desire is something everyone wants to 'have' like fortune and fame but it's something that isn't equal to passion. Eric and 'you' ( the player ) is great example of this. Although Eric was talented in skateboarding he wasn't as nearly as passionate as You ( the player ) in fact multiple times its shown Eric envy You for what you can do and is capable of. Eric wants nothing but what he desires and will do anything to get a hold of it. As for 'You' ( the player ) only wants to go further in your passion (by learning new things to improve) and not be so quick to be jealous of others competitively (like how Eric is quick to take away competition) rather ( the player ) is filled with passion enjoys such competition and enjoys the ride wether you lose or not. Skateboarding not bout fame or fortune or winning or losing. Its about the adrenaline of feeling free and alive.

This review has aged so well. The addition of you guys composing your own music, plus the whole DIY feeling of the entire production, it's hard to describe but I guess the only way to put it is that this video is feels precision-engineered to be enjoyed on a rainy day. No joke is too long and obnoxious, and the pace is kept up nicely with great snappy editing. The script is worthy of praise too. This is the ideal review in my eyes. You even composed and sung your own punk song for a NOFX joke! BADASS Do you have any tips for composing/scriptwriting for this type of thing? I've been inspired here.

I’m not sure how good my advice would be since I’m not sure what kind of tone you’re wanting to have for what you’re making. I can say though that you describe what we want to capture with these videos perfectly. I’ve always liked KZbin as a way for people to make content that’s authentic to themselves. I obviously like video games a lot so I focus the channel on that, but I also love music and comedy, and the coziness of old PBS documentaries. I don’t consciously think to make something that would be nice to watch on a rainy day, but I know exactly what you’re talking about, and it’s one of my favorite vibes a piece of art can give me, so the desire to make something that’ll convey that feeling is going to manifest in some way, even if it’s not planned out. Despite how long these videos take to make they’re not very calculated, we write down a script obviously, but I change a lot when recording since Tropics is usually there to give me feedback, and sometimes suggest ways to expand bits. When things are being edited in audio and video, there’s a lot of things cut out to make things flow better, but also stuff will be added on in the editing stage too to enhance a mood or create space, or create a joke by timing an image or video to show up on screen. It means that these videos have decisions made on the spot, allowing them to take on their own life as it gets developed more, and I try to lean into that as best I can. I love simple editing a lot. For whatever reason I would watch a lot of “rant” videos when I was a kid in 2009 where random people would talk about 4kids or Jesus Camp for 10 minutes. Most of these were just guys with their webcams but some of them would scroll through images instead, nume26 probably did this the best out of all of them since she would use the scrolling images to tell secondary jokes which I’m still a fan of. The DIY aspect to the videos is actually something I care about a lot. I like presenting these videos as if they’re completely amateur, because when somebody takes a risk with their time to watch it through and gets something out of it, it creates a fun feeling that you’ve discovered something unknown and fun. It’s a part of the reason that I hope the channel can stay niche, because that effect is kind of lost when a channel has 50k+ subs. Despite the simplicity in editing, I always put in a lot of work in editing to make sure that cuts happen right when they should, I abuse one feature in premiere that lets me go frame by frame and hear the audio at any moment, and use this to make sure that cuts happen just at the right time, it helps an insane amount when I’m trying to figure out the right time to cut from a joke. I don’t think there’s really a formula for it, but you get a sense for what feels right after a bit. You’d be surprised how being only couple frames off can completely kill a delivery. I read through and record some of these jokes many times, and I’ll edit them stone-faced, but I know when the edit is good because I’ll end up cracking up at it all over again. That’s the real key to anything creative. A lot of people will say to just “be yourself”, but I think that’s much easier said than done. People generally want to hide themselves even when they can be anonymous online. A lot of people overthink things, instead of doing what is funny to them and seeing it through, they focus on what other people think is funny, instead of doing what they like, they do what others like, or see what other youtubers are doing, and try to copy their style in hopes of finding success. You might get some fans with this, but they will be liking an inauthentic persona that doesn’t reflect who you really are, and over time you’ll find that what was suppose to be a fun hobby has turned into something miserable, the only benefit is an emotional shield from harsh criticism, it’s easier to handwave that away when the content they’re criticizing doesn’t reflect who you are in any way, but I don’t think the tradeoff is worth it at all in the long run. Obviously not everybody is going to like running shine videos, but the people who do are going to get more out of it since I think an audience can tell when something is made out of fun and good spirits. Best I can say is do what you want, hear people out when they have feedback (even if it’s rude or insulting, sometimes there can still be something useful they’re saying), try not to focus on numbers. If you mean composing as in music, I can try to give some advice on that but I’d need to write up another comment tomorrow or later. Happy you like the NoFX parody!

@@RunningShine fuck man. I did not expect all this. It makes me SO relieved to see that you guys WANT to stay niche. Oh that is so relieving. The views on that YIIK video scared me a bit. Not because I don't want that kind of success for you guys or anything, I just know a ton of youtubers who had that vibe we're discussing and lost it due to weekly uploads, chasing trends, sponsors, or other tacky stuff. It's so nice to see the attitude you display here. Your writing and editing tips are very helpful too. I do love that premiere feature, it is so fucking nice. And yeah, I'm not big on numbers. I would prefer to also stay niche like this, just making videos on things I'm super passionate about, trying to stay mostly positive and engaging to a small core audience. But the whole composing your own music thing is what really drew me in here. I've never tried any kind of compositions before, short of playing some mediocre riffs on a terrible electric guitar sloppily. Never anything digital though. I'm assuming you use fruityloops or pro tools for sequencing and record your instruments live? Idk if I could afford the monthly cost, but like I said I'm completely clueless here. I don't have a Mac so GarageBand is out the window. I hear you about being genuine too. It's tough but definitely the more fun way to make this kind of stuff. Sorry for the overly long response, I'm just stunned at how much effort you put into your response. I've been trying to change this PFP forever and its still the super old lame one, so sorry for that. And I apologize if asking for composition advice is too hefty or loaded of a question for a youtube comments thread. I saw you did some work for the METAGAME soundtrack and that's exactly the type of thing I can get down with composing. Just not sure where to start really. I really appreciate your long and thought out response though man. I'll be eagerly anticipating you seeing this and as always excited for your next video, I think I saw a post about it being ocarina. Hype shit

@@classclown6ya I think it’s great you played some guitar previously even if you’re not very confident with how good you played. It’s a really nice instrument because it’s very “relative” if that makes sense. If you learn to play a song in G, changing it to A is a matter of sliding up 2 notes on the guitar scale, so the muscle memory is always the same, this makes it great for learning songs because I feel it makes you focus more on the movement between chords and how the harmony is working much faster compared to other instruments where you spend more time at first focusing on hitting the notes themselves. It’s not perfect though, piano definitely has it beat for composing in my eyes since you can easily play base in one hand and do the chords/melody in the other. Back in the day Mac was definitely king of music production, but I think that’s changed a lot in recent years. I have a much easier time working with VST’s on windows, for instance. And AISO4ALL allows for high quality low latency on windows soundcards that works just as good as Core Audio on Mac. If you’re using an audio interface for recording though, it’s a non issue since you’re going to be using its driver instead of the sound card in the computer. I’ve used several different music programs through the years. Most of what was done on Metagame was back when I worked in Cubase, but recently I’ve been spending more time in Ableton, and have gotten pretty obsessed with tracking programs like Renoise and Deflemask. Fruityloops, Ableton, and Cubase all basically function the same though, you compose with a sequencer where you can add tracks and Midi sequences to compose the music, and run those tracks through effects like reverb and EQ. With Midi tracks you can assign them to playback with VST instruments that give you sounds for all kinds of instruments like pianos, synthesizers, drums, etc. They’re all very solid choices, so if you want to learn, just pick the one that works the best in terms of price or the one that looks the nicest to use. If you want something cheap, Reaper is a fantastic digital audio workstation similar to Cubase and Ableton, but has a much more affordable license and it’s a one time payment where you don’t need to deal with usb keys. It’s not the prettiest program but it’s insanely flexible and works near perfectly. A lot of the stuff I did for Metagame was more ambient, and I remember for those tracks I leaned a lot on maj7 and min7 chords and didn’t mess around with dominants because that would create a sense of harmonic movement towards some kind of resolution as to give the tracks a bit of a floaty and unresolving harmony. I also used a lot of pedal tones, which is where you play a single note in the bass, and only change the chords. I was really into the Warp Records IDM stuff like μ-ziq and Boards of Canada, so I was kind of chasing that sound a bit. Nowadays I’m more into jazz and pop music so I like dominant chords now and more traditional harmony, although I still like revisiting that floatier style of composing every once in awhile. I really recommend learning songs that you like on piano or guitar and trying to understand what’s happening with the chords and bass. I notice a lot of people get really into music theory, but don’t apply that knowledge to learning songs, which I think is the best way to learn, it’s a lot easier to internalize theory when you can see it being used practically in songs you like, it allows you to find patterns and directions you can take harmony through experience and creates a kind of “harmonic library” you can pull from. I recommend learning analog synthesizers too since I was all about them on that soundtrack. I really like the Juno-60 and SH-101 VST clones done by Tal software, and often I would just turn the cutoff down to get a very lower mid range tone and use that for chords. Nowadays I’m really into FM synthesis and am actually thinking of doing a video showing how to program it and the great sounds it can produce since it’s a bit unintuitive to use. Also I don’t think there’s anything wrong with your PFP, nothing wrong with repping Cowboy Bebop in my eyes. Hopefully I was able to help!

Running Shine is the perfect example of what old internet humor and game reviews used to be. People like to brush it off as "outdated" or "didn't age well," but they get that impression because a majority of the time they didn't grow up on pre-2014 internet and were surrounded by entertainment that was much tamer. People really miss out on the charm and wit that comes from this style of video out of this view point of "ew old" because they don't know why it was so well liked and widespread in the first place. I feel like that's why everything has to be so watered-down, which is why everything seems so childish and shallow nowadays.

This is still probably the best review on the channel even today, not to take away from every other video as they're just as good, especially with the length and effort put into them, but something about this one is so rewatchable to me. The pacing, the delivery and timing on jokes, and the poignant critiques that bring up good points throughout really make it such an excellent review, for a skateboarding game of all things. I'm glad that your style for game reviewing was pretty much perfected with this video as I've probably watched this one about 30 times in the last 2 months or so.

Keep it up, man. I've been wanting to see a good Plinkett-style reviewer of video games, and this channel is the closest thing and more. 28:00 THANK YOU! Thank you, a game that acknowledges that everything has its limits and after a point it's okay to use violence! I am so tired of stories, be they in games or TV shows or books or movies or whatever, where the antagonist just keeps doing horrible shit, but the protagonist needs to be shown as a good person by never getting physical. I think people forget that the protagonist already *has* the high ground because they're not the one that started shit, and forget what the teachers told you in elementary school, ethically speaking it absolutely matters whether you act or are re-acting to what someone else has done. The player here gives Eric 3 chances throughout the game and Eric screws him over three times, the final one leading the player character to jail. It's perfectly reasonable to get physical at that point and actually vent the anger that the character _and_ player are feeling in a satisfying way. If you turn the other cheek and the guy uses the opportunity to pants you, you knee him in the chin and kick him in the chest while he's down. So, yeah. Nice to see some media that realizes that it's not only unrealistic but also unhealthy to send a message of absolute eternal pacifism.
@on-zm8sg
@on-zm8sg 2 жыл бұрын
(Necroposting from a comment of 1 year ago, c r i n g e I know) A bit of a minor point here, while I don't disagree with EVERYTHING in this comment, you lost me when you said it's "unhealthy" to not use violence against an asshole, while I don't have a problem seeing one getting punched, this kind of implies that violence is the ONLY way to deal with anger and that not doing so is "bad". But thing is, there are other (and arguably better) ways of dealing with anger than lashing it out against someone, especially because if you punch someone, you even have the risk of getting into a fight and get hurt! TLDR: Violence can be "acceptable" but that doesn't mean it's always the best and most ideal option.
@Shenaldrac
@Shenaldrac 2 жыл бұрын
@@on-zm8sg I never said that violence is always the right choice or only the right choice. As I brought up multiple times, it is the fact that the character has wronged the protagonist many, many times throughout the game. Wronged them in ways with serious repercussions including jail time. I am not at all advocating for slugging someone because they cut in front of you in line at the grocery store. What I am advocating for is an end to the message that violence is _never_ the answer. That is what I believe is unhealthy, the notion that it is _never_ okay under _any_ circumstance to use violence. I one hundred percent am not trying to say that people should make violence their first resort.
@on-zm8sg
@on-zm8sg 2 жыл бұрын
@@Shenaldrac I actually didn't mean to say that, but that's because I should've specified that it was also on the situation where the violence is "acceptable", so yeah, my mystake. Even in the context of the story, as satisfying as it is to see the protagonist punching Eric, it's not as if it would be "unhealthy" if the protagonist just left him alone which was my point, since as I said, there are other ways of dealing with anger. What WOULD be unhealthy, was if Eric suddenly decided to use violence first and the protagonist didn't, and the game treats the protagonist as being right for doing so.

Although I'm hella hungry though so I might spend that $5 on 7/11... although actually I didn't have the $5 in the first place so I'm probably just gonna go to sleep so I can wake up to my shitty alarm clock for work. Keep on making sick stuff though man I can't wait for more and am probably gonna start marathoning some of your other stuff. Peace!

I had tech decks, tech deck dudes, the hand skateboards sold at FAO schwarz, I was a spoiled skater kid in a way despite my parents not having a lot of money. Best I ever did was almost land ollieing down an 8 stair. I kick flipped a 4 stair successfully if you think that's better.

The first Underground was great, except for the horrible vehicle controls. Underground 2 basically marked the end of Tony Hawk, while American Wasteland was kinda OK, nothing good came out after Underground 1 and they should've just ended the series there.

No plan's on stopping! The next video just needs to be edited, still takes a bit to get them out as I have a lot of college work and a project I'm composing music for which take priority. as of now the editing for the next video is around a third done, and hopefully when school and this project slow down I can buckle down and do tons of work on the next video and future ones!

Every time I think about skateboarding (despite loving most of the earlier Tony Hawk games) my brain always goes to that video where the skateboarder apparently ripped open his family-jewel-purse and just go, "I'm kinda glad I never tried actually skateboarding apart from that one I had for, like, a week that I could kinda roll around on a do a tiny wheelie until my stepdad tried to use it and broke it because it was probably from Wal-Mart or something." My actual brain can be as long-winded as when I type stuff barely anyone will ever see.
