Long shrouded in mystery and done by what seemed like magicians, running the rack on a 2 Stroke Detroit Diesel is actually a simple job. It only requires patience and a few tools. In this video we adjust the air gap, injector stroke( rack), idle speed and buffer screw. While there we verify the adjustments of the valves, jake bridges, and injector height. This applies to all mechanical injected 53, 71, and 92 series engines. Please refer to the Detroit

you should set 1 left and then 1 right to balance the injectors on both banks to set the control at the governor and then set the rest as Damian Frattasio has suggested. You don't need the wedge as I use the .200 thou gauge from Kent-Moore and it sets the gap accurately and saves time for adjusting the governor gap. Just some suggestions from a Detroit mechanic

Great show, I've been a Detroit operator and fan for years. They can be agricultural though very Technically specific on tuning but you just have to love the basic simplicity, they had a job to do. Turn clean fuel and air into beautiful music. On that and off the subject many many years ago (40 odd) I had a couple of injector height tools and found they were perfect for setting injector pump timing on a 3208 CAT. .Never bothered to find out what the CAT tool was.. Question: Does this video cover a Variable Speed Governor ? It looks pretty different than the one in the video as mine has a short plunger guide with a variable speed spring. The part where you have the idle adjustment screw is not the same here either once the two bolts are removed the end with the speed control lever etc ., idle screw etc comes off totally? I have a issue with the idle adjustment will not adjust properly and the engine is at 1500 rpm’s at idle. I believe it is binding internally at some point. Thoughts??

@LacroixCruiser

750hp cuts into the life ( the more HP the shorter the lifespan. Also be mindful of the limitations of your transmission with that much power. With that said if it took you 41 years to accumulate 62,000 hours, you’ll probably get a good 20 years

Kind of an off the cuff question, but what effect would you see in the operation of an engine if the governor gap was too tight or too loose? Also might be nice to point out that the injector control tubes on the older engines had two screws in place of the one adjusting screw and jam nut. Adjustment procedure is pretty much the same, just need to back off one and tighten the other. As for the term "Run the Rack" I think it would make more sense if one just added an "S" to the end of the work "Rack". Or even said "Adjusting the Racks" but this is a "Detroit Class" not "English Composition Class!" If you want some excitement adjust the rack with the shut down cable in the stop position then fire it up! BTDT once!
