I don't find rest works because I took an entire year off from track. Year 2, workout 2 and shin splints are back again. Good shoes, running on grass or turf (and on treadmills, put the angle up and not zero), increasing workouts very very slowly should help

Hello guys, I have had compartment syndrome in the shins for 10 years. Sinds I was 12 years old I could not run, play soccer, jump, ride my bike for half an hour, or walk longer than 5 minutes. Even the 5 minutes were painfull. I have done a lot of research about how I could possably fix this and prevent to have it again. It became my life goal. I have had a lot of physical therapie and special insoles for my shoes. None of that worked. I have had 2 surgeries on both my shins. Both fascias are cut open because they were too tight around the muscle and my shin muscles have more space to move and grow. Now at age 22 im starting sports again. Mostly working on the strength and the agility of the calves, hip flexors, glutes. I also started running again, this time with the forefoot stride. I also switched from running shoes, using the nike free now instead of a pair with big heel and arch support. I can say from experience that you can recover from injuries like this. With or without surgery. A lot of therapists focus on only the calves and the shoes. But like this man in this video says, work on the glutes and hipflexors too. You need the flexibility for a full range of motion so the muscles can absorb the impact of running to their maximum. Also I experienced a lot of pain in the heels and the rest of my feet. I am not a fan of arch-supported shoes. Because I have the theory that when your foot is not strong enough to make your form as it is supposed to be, you have to make it stronger by yourself instead of supporting it and let it work even less. I fixed this by starting climbing sports, like wall climbing and bouldering. My feet were getting stronger every month and the pain was gone in a year. I am still fixing my form. But at least the pain is gone now. I shared my experience because I know how it feels like to have this kind of injury. And I want to let people know that it is possible to fix. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them. I would be happy to share my knowledge to help others out. Have a good day.

Georgiana Nicoleta I was training hard - injured my heel then my back came back after 4 weeks and thought I could keep up with my old training partners - ended up ruining my chins and was in pain. Have been resting for 3 days and icing - so scared to run again
@georgiananicoleta94304 жыл бұрын
@@supaplayer123 Andrew, I totally feel you. When I first got shin spints, I injured my right shin and I was barely walking (at that time I would run 5-7km /4 times a week) and I took 2 weeks off. After 2 weeks I was so so happy I could run again and I ran 10km on Monday(with little to no pain between the 7th km and the 10th) and on Thrusday I ran 7km. The next day the pain was excruciating! And I knew I made a huge mistake. I wish noone such a pain. It's so frustrating. Anyway, this happening was in April. I have taken May off and worked on my form in June. The right shin has been recovering and the pain wore off eventually(bcs of icing 2 times/day for 20 min) but then, the left shin had its turn 😣. In July I ran only 10 times I suppose and now, the second half of August is off again and I'm curious about September. I hope that it'll heal but in case of any pain again, I will take much more time off running. I wish you recover as soon as possible and don't make the mistakes I've made. Do not underestimate icing, do some strength training and take advantage of your time aaaaand remember that you'd better take time off now than later. At that time I was thinking that running is everything and 2 months off running seemed a lot to me, but if I had done what I should've my both shins may not have injured.

+Listless Donkey Hi! Thank you for the awesome comment! To answer your question: you need to do as much as possible to strengthen your hips! If you're running a lot, you need to do quite a bit to counter-act any imbalances. There are a ton of awesome exercises you can do for your hips. The clam targets the hips directly, but you can other exercises that hit more muscles and your hips at the same time. For example, squats, reverse lunges or side lunges. Basically, you have to include a basic strength program to assist your running posture and your shins. 2-3 days per week is perfect and you can do anywhere from bodyweight, kettlebell or weight training. Here's an example of a bodyweight routine: Mon 50 Bodyweight squats 25 Clams per side 25 Jump Squats Wed 50 Side Lunges (25 each side) 40 Hip Bridges (20 per leg) 30 Lateral Hops (25 each side) Fri 50 Reverse Lunges 30 Single Leg Toe Touches (15 each leg) 25 Jump Squats *Single Leg Toe Touches are performed by balancing yourself on one foot, slightly bend at your knee, then bend at the waist and try to touch your toe with your opposite hand. This is a quick bodyweight routine that'll help out your shins and running. Plus, it's quick😀 Wish this helps you out, and anymore questions feel free to ask my friend😆

+kaiyangchen Hi! I apologize for taking so long to get back to you. I just got active again on KZbin, so any future questions should be answered within 24-48 hrs. To answer your question it depends on the severity of your shin splints, and the root cause. For example, you may be getting shin splints due to a bad back or hip posture. If you don't get that fixed, you'll never recover. I recommend going to a running store to get your running form analyzed. If your form is good, then you should recover quickly. So what is quickly? If you take care of your shins (icing, resting and strengthening) you may take anywhere from 4-12 weeks to heal up. It takes time, so you need to have some patience. Finally, if you want the absolute best expertise on healing faster, I would recommend checking out a physical therapist. They are the experts in healing shin splints, since they can physically massage and release the tension in your shin splints. Wish this helps you out Kai!!

I'd say your Rolling stick is a lot more effective than us massaging, actually. Both works, but a Rolling stick or a foam roller is better + if you buy one you can use it a lot more often than you'd want to go see your physiotherapist. I do agree looking to us for help, though, but your video and its content are solid and right on the spot.

+Kingof Thecastle Thank you! Are you a physiotherapist? I always advocate preventative measures, but once a chronic injury occurs, specialists can help people to shave off recovery time, and potentially costly and more painful issues down the road. Do you have any recommendations on how to find a good physiotherapist? I'd like to make a future video based on that question.

Great video. I've found the only way to stop the shin splints is really taking your roadwork slow. It sucks cuz you won't be winded or tired but you gotta build up those muscles. So I find doing long roadwork twice a week and the other days eliptical trainer and stationary bike and rowing machine. And to split it like 2 days elliptical stationary bike rowing machine then 3rd day 2 miles running on the road. Then day off then repeat again gradually increasing mileage.

I agree with everything you’ve said throughout this video, but changing to shoes with less support really bad for the the shins. I recommend adjusting and changing running style and try to mimic the Kenyans for perfect form with less stress.
