I think this video is the best single all in one guide on shin splints - I have watched a ton and seen all the medical, PT, chiro, etc. All helped some but the exercises you showed keep it simple and easier to stick with than all the multiple exercises my PT guy gave me.

i had shin splints when i first started running 3 years ago and what helped me recover was taking ice baths (but without the ice lol). i would fill my bath tub with the coldest water possible and sit in it for 15 minutes after every run. worked wonders for me and i would recommend this to anyone!

Nice video. Also for those suffering from this horrible condition, remember to fix the problem, not the symptoms. Basically I'm a sprinter and this basically means I can't Sprint. Its horrible. I don't find rest works because I took an entire year off from track. Year 2, workout 2 and shin splints are back again. Good shoes, running on grass or turf (and on treadmills, put the angle up and not zero), increasing workouts very very slowly should help

Wey neta que tú eres la onda!! Muchas gracias! Recientemente empecé a correr más e inscribirme a carreras (just bc I was bored) I’ve been running for 6 years but only at the un in the treadmill, rarely outside but now I am becoming a real runner. 5 years ago I got a strained quadricep and that fck me up really bad forever, everytime I increase the speed or mileages per week, my leg started hurting, but not only that, eventually the knee and then I get shin splints. Finally I started googling my injuries and I couldn’t understand well (en ingles no, no mames, y es español tampoco 😂) then i come to KZbin and found your video about knee pain/runners knee and you opened my mind and showed me a whole new world! And I like how fun you make it! Thanks, please sigue iluminándonos con tu wiseness!

Hello guys, I have had compartment syndrome in the shins for 10 years. Sinds I was 12 years old I could not run, play soccer, jump, ride my bike for half an hour, or walk longer than 5 minutes. Even the 5 minutes were painfull. I have done a lot of research about how I could possably fix this and prevent to have it again. It became my life goal. I have had a lot of physical therapie and special insoles for my shoes. None of that worked. I have had 2 surgeries on both my shins. Both fascias are cut open because they were too tight around the muscle and my shin muscles have more space to move and grow. Now at age 22 im starting sports again. Mostly working on the strength and the agility of the calves, hip flexors, glutes. I also started running again, this time with the forefoot stride. I also switched from running shoes, using the nike free now instead of a pair with big heel and arch support. I can say from experience that you can recover from injuries like this. With or without surgery. A lot of therapists focus on only the calves and the shoes. But like this man in this video says, work on the glutes and hipflexors too. You need the flexibility for a full range of motion so the muscles can absorb the impact of running to their maximum. Also I experienced a lot of pain in the heels and the rest of my feet. I am not a fan of arch-supported shoes. Because I have the theory that when your foot is not strong enough to make your form as it is supposed to be, you have to make it stronger by yourself instead of supporting it and let it work even less. I fixed this by starting climbing sports, like wall climbing and bouldering. My feet were getting stronger every month and the pain was gone in a year. I am still fixing my form. But at least the pain is gone now. I shared my experience because I know how it feels like to have this kind of injury. And I want to let people know that it is possible to fix. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them. I would be happy to share my knowledge to help others out. Have a good day.

honestly it sucks because a lot of people say that u need to try going at a different/slower pace and try a new exercise but i’m in a camp training for cross country and the coach makes us do what he wants us to do. we can’t start doing our own run at our own pace and he doesn’t let us stop if we’re in pain. i hope this video will help lol. my shin splints are so bad rn.

+kaiyangchen Hi! I apologize for taking so long to get back to you. I just got active again on KZbin, so any future questions should be answered within 24-48 hrs. To answer your question it depends on the severity of your shin splints, and the root cause. For example, you may be getting shin splints due to a bad back or hip posture. If you don't get that fixed, you'll never recover. I recommend going to a running store to get your running form analyzed. If your form is good, then you should recover quickly. So what is quickly? If you take care of your shins (icing, resting and strengthening) you may take anywhere from 4-12 weeks to heal up. It takes time, so you need to have some patience. Finally, if you want the absolute best expertise on healing faster, I would recommend checking out a physical therapist. They are the experts in healing shin splints, since they can physically massage and release the tension in your shin splints. Wish this helps you out Kai!!

I'd say your Rolling stick is a lot more effective than us massaging, actually. Both works, but a Rolling stick or a foam roller is better + if you buy one you can use it a lot more often than you'd want to go see your physiotherapist. I do agree looking to us for help, though, but your video and its content are solid and right on the spot.
@Aztecathletics
@Aztecathletics 8 жыл бұрын
+Kingof Thecastle Thank you! Are you a physiotherapist? I always advocate preventative measures, but once a chronic injury occurs, specialists can help people to shave off recovery time, and potentially costly and more painful issues down the road. Do you have any recommendations on how to find a good physiotherapist? I'd like to make a future video based on that question.

Proper stretching and running posture has greatly improved my ability to run for longer and it really feels like im getting rid of the pain for good. Also ive stopped running on asphalt or pavement and stick to grass or dirt trails.

Excellent video. It covers everything and is very clear. Do you suggest doing multiple exercises to strengthen hips etc or is just doing say...the clam enough? I've seen others suggest doing lots of varied exercises for hips
@Aztecathletics
@Aztecathletics 8 жыл бұрын
+Listless Donkey Hi! Thank you for the awesome comment! To answer your question: you need to do as much as possible to strengthen your hips! If you're running a lot, you need to do quite a bit to counter-act any imbalances. There are a ton of awesome exercises you can do for your hips. The clam targets the hips directly, but you can other exercises that hit more muscles and your hips at the same time. For example, squats, reverse lunges or side lunges. Basically, you have to include a basic strength program to assist your running posture and your shins. 2-3 days per week is perfect and you can do anywhere from bodyweight, kettlebell or weight training. Here's an example of a bodyweight routine: Mon 50 Bodyweight squats 25 Clams per side 25 Jump Squats Wed 50 Side Lunges (25 each side) 40 Hip Bridges (20 per leg) 30 Lateral Hops (25 each side) Fri 50 Reverse Lunges 30 Single Leg Toe Touches (15 each leg) 25 Jump Squats *Single Leg Toe Touches are performed by balancing yourself on one foot, slightly bend at your knee, then bend at the waist and try to touch your toe with your opposite hand. This is a quick bodyweight routine that'll help out your shins and running. Plus, it's quick😀 Wish this helps you out, and anymore questions feel free to ask my friend😆

It depends it could even take weeks. I substitute my running by using a stationary bike. I cycle in stationary bike for like 3 hrs or 63 km equivalent to like 42 km of running. That helped my lower leg strong while also working on my cardio.

Nice advices. Let me check and let you know. I have been walking of late and have had shin splints...I need to change to a landing on the toe-ball, and need to change my shoe when I start running instead of walking. ...thanks

Hey man im aboutta go to usmc boot camp in three months. When i first started training in preparation about 2 months ago i kept making progress just fine. I had shin splints but i “cured” them by wearing compression sleeves and icing before runs. It worked amazing but now the shin splints came back. Not only that but now my calves cramp and tighten up pretty bad while running. It’s taken a pretty bad toll on my training and im freaking out. I only have 3 months to make as much cardio progress while healing my stupid ass calves.

NO. You are using the exercise bands the wrong way. it is best used for the anterior tibialis. there is no better way to strengthen it other than that.

The actual hidden fix for this is found behind the knee. Massage the injured leg and works your way up to behind the knee. You will feel lots of veins. Give them a smooth rub. Thank me later.

HI. thanks for the video is really awesome. have a question on either running on treadmill can be associated with higher or lower change to get shin splints compared to outdoor running
@Aztecathletics
@Aztecathletics 7 жыл бұрын
+andrea alvarez Hi! It depends. If you're running with a bad posture or jump up in miles abruptly, you will get shin splints either way. Typically, running on a treadmill should be less stressful on your joints and shins, because treadmills have shock absorbers. When you run on the sidewalk or street, there are no shock absorbers in the ground. Hence, your legs take on all of the impact. So, treadmills tend to be more joint and shin friendly. The best advice I can give you for treadmill running is to run on an incline (it'll force you to run on your mid-foot = less shin stress), and find a way to entertain yourself (it can get boring after awhile😑). Are you considering the treadmill for shin issues or are you getting ready for the winter?
