Actually, if the plate flexes when the weight is on the toe (seems clear it does - they can be bent in the hands), then there is a return of energy when the foot leaves the ground behind the runner as the plate returns to flat, meeting the definition of a spring. This efficient (I think) return of energy adds to the return of energy from the rubbery foam efficiently expanding after it has been compressed. They are indeed super shoes!

Followed your running closely in your competitive days, always a fan! Would like to get more information on the running stride lengths and paces that ASICS (and other brands of this is available) suggest for each shoe. I’m now on my 50’s and struggle through injuries but still enjoy racing track. Shoes have become more important now than before so having this data could be very useful.

Carbon plate serve as a spring like and not preventing sinking. Otherwise they can use plastic instead of expensive carbon plate

If the carbon plate really is just to create a firmer ride why not just reduce the amount of foam? Or use a firmer foam?

😏 yep thats why i switched to barefoot shoes. Say no to big foamy boxy shoes. conventional dont let u use your toes while running and atrophy most foot muscles and and tendons unless u have unusually narrow feet. Feet vary in width just as much as they do in length. for some reason shoe companies do not understand this. (most likely dont care 💰)

I'm sprinter/jumper. I'm ready for new trainers. I wore the adidas adios 7 which has "torsional rods" in them. Should I switch back to foam only? I like the lightness and responsiveness of the shoe, but I read a comment that carbon plate shoes can make your feet week. My background: I'm a D1 athlete that, I have good muscular balance and a strong and mobile ankle foot complex. Any feedback will help. Thanks!

Anyone have suggestions on which carbon plated shoes are good for a mild overpronator? I have some Saucony Endorphin Pro 3 which I love but my ankles start to hurt about 15km in. What you all wearing?

What's the best Carbon Plated shoe with a very pronounced Rocker bottom? I hear North Face Vectiv are great, but they have an overwhelming lineup of many types! Thank you!

Couple of questions. Are they better suited to racing than every day training? Do they last as long as ‘normal’ shoes?

They work best as a race day shoe but your foot will get weaker if you use them every day

They work 100% once you’ve worn a pair you’ll never go back. Before your next race look at so many of the athletes further up the front their all wearing them now

I think from what others have told me in person and what I've seen online is that they're pretty long lasting shoes. I've never heard anyone say they got less than 300 miles on a pair, and most people seem to get around 500 before they need a new one. And it's not as if they fall apart when you hit 500, it's just that they're a lot less responsive and springy and the foam is compressed. They're $200+ shoes and the quality is shown

People whom generally run marathons will tell you that they are race only shoes and that they are only meant for sub 5 or 6 minute / mile people. They will also say that it is because they will weaken your feet, ankles etc. This is nonsense. I read everywhere in comments from people that get amazing results daily running in “super shoes”. They put a lot less wear and tear on your body and allow you to recover so much faster. The ONLY real downside that I read is from people that say the cost can be an issue, which I agree, but you get what you pay for. If you can afford it, I would totally recommend a super show such as an alpha fly for anyone but specifically for older runners, 40+ for sure.

@@gmezg Thanks for this because I’ve now been using a pair of Hoka Carbon x for about 10 months and I can confirm your comments. First off they’re super comfortable. Part of that, of course, is fit but more than that they’re much more comfortable in terms of actual running, especially running downhill where I find the carbon plate acts as a super cushion (with energy returned), so inspiring confidence. This has led to possibly my longest ever period of running injury free (touch wood!), and I’m also delighted that I’m now well over 400 miles. I’m trying to extend their life by using off roaders and ordinary shoes, and I’m still noticing a difference, though I’m just starting to feel some deterioration. All told, I’m sticking with carbon!

The amount of foam makes these shoes extremely unstable and there is a risk of injury. The gain is 1-2% at best for good form runners which doesnt make sense the risk. For example a runner that runs at 20km/h will gain 0.2-0.4km/h which is negligible.

Carbon Fiber is known for being super light. It isn't adding anything new, just removing excess weight by changing the material used in shoe construction.

Most shoes are too narrow - your foot is foot shaped, and is most likely not "wide" as society wants you to think. The Altras are a great option!

We would recommend going into a sports shop that specialises in running shoes and has a treadmill so you can try out the shoes before purchasing them. Carbon plated shoes do feel different and take some getting used to.

Avoid them at all cost unless you are an elite runner. Destructive for your Knees and running mechanics unless you are a pro. The time improvement for an average runner is not worth the cost of joint issues they cause.

So why would a shoe have more than one carbon plate? Is it just a marketing gimmick, so companies can say "this shoe is banned, so it must just be good"?
