I live in Makawao, which is in upcountry Maui. The beaches are beautiful, but the upcountry area is majestic; and almost all of the beaches and mountain trails are within 20 to 60 minutes from my house. The weather is perfect year round in the upcountry area. Cool nights and warm days, and almost never hot or humid, with great trade winds. We retired here 2.5 years ago, just 4 months before the COVID BS started. In retrospect, we arrive right on time. It's a great place to be quarantined on.

One thing that is missing throughout this is the term respect! Respect for people, respect for place, respect for culture. Always leave somewhere nicer than when you got there. Please and thank you go a long way here. Understanding local customs and culture is essential to a successful vacation. Volunteer your time at some of the nonprofits for an immersive cultural experience.

As a born and raised Maui Local, that has family roots going back 200 years. After watching your video of " WHAT NO ONE TELLS YOU ABOUT MAUI"...I need to add to your information: 1. If you can't swim, have a bad heart condition, and are claustrophobic -PLEASE DO NOT SNORKEL!!! Almost every week on Maui, we hear about some visitor dying while snorkeling...so don't do it! 2. ALL OF MAUI'S BEACHES ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC! IT'S A STATE OF HAWAII LAW THAT NO BEACH WILL EVER BECOME PRIVATE! AND REMEMBER...ENTER THE OCEAN AT YOUR OWN RISK! 3. Maui locals do not go to Paia, due to the large of amount of visitors and price gouging that takes place at the Paia Stores. The only worthwhile place in Paia where locals go is a place called Mana Foods. 4. Everything on Maui is expensive! Be prepared for sticker shock! 5. Do not drink and drive on Maui. The Maui County Police Department has zero-tolerance for driving under the influence of alcohol and illegal drugs. You will be arrested if caught while driving intoxicated. 6. Do not flash a shaka sign to locals...it's disrespectful. A head nod is a better option. 7. If you need to speak to a local about anything...remember to be humble when speaking to them. 8. Heavy property crimes on Maui at the high visitor locations, please remember to secure all valuables in your hotel room, or if you have to take them with you...don't just leave it laying around...because someone will take them and you will never see it again!! 9. Maui only has ONE hospital, under Maui Health Systems/ Kaiser Hawaii. It's located in Wailuku. The Emergency Department is open 24/7. 10. Do not take any rocks you find on Maui home with you. Leave the rocks, the sand, and whatever else back on Maui. 11. Lastly, IF IN DOUBT ABOUT GOING OUT IN THE OCEAN...DON'T GO OUT! STAY ON THE BEACH OR SWIM IN THE POOL AT THE HOTEL. FYI- WAINAPANAPE STATE PARK IN HANA IS A BAD AREA TO GO SWIMMING! LOCALS AND VISITORS HAVE DROWNED THERE! Remember, Maui is not some magical place in LALA land. Take care and be safe when on Maui.

can I add, bring the Aloha with you. Maui, and Hawaii in general, is not like the Brady Bunch trip. It's a rock in the middle of the ocean that has to have 99% of its infrastructure shipped to it so bring kindness, patience, respect and a lot of Aloha with you. It goes a long way.

I absolutely love Maui! I just got back two weeks ago, our 7th time visiting and I'm still watching videos because I miss is already! The road to Hana and Haleakala are two of the things I think people should experience when they visit Maui. Haleakala is truly incredible, I've watch the sunrise there, but yet to go back and watch the sunset, (which I believe you don't need a reservation for) My family and I love staying in a hotel in Lahaina for a few days then heading to stay in Kiehei for the remainder of our trip usually. It's a good way to wind down from the touristy vibe in Kaanapali, plus Kihei is much closer to the airport.

For accommodations don't stay in Wailea unless you like to burn money. You can rent a condo in Kihei and go to all the beaches ⛱️ and sit next to the people who paid to stay at the four seasons. If you can get to know the locals, I've always found them to be calm and gracious and just nice to be around.

You could stay at any number of airbnb condo's right on the water for less than any resort. You are correct about spring and fall being cheaper to stay. I just checked what it would cost someone to stay at our place in West Maui in September. $317 a night which includes tax and fees, and you can save money by eating breakfast in the condo. Literally 50 feet from the water. We don't have a swim up bar, like a resort, but it's fun to cook a meal on the grill and eat ocean side without having to make a reservation.

@@RAakaCHI-191 I get that if you are talking about places that haven’t been historically vacation rentals. Our place is in a complex that was built in the 1970’s. It was zoned Hotel in the beginning. It has always been vacation rental units. If we were to rent out our place to a long term tenant, their rent would be close to 4 grand a month for a one bedroom 575 sq ft. Housing is for sure an issue on Maui. I’m not sure what the answer is. Even the single family “affordable” houses being built are inching up towards a million $$$. That’s not sustainable.

Maui is the most Magical place I've ever Visited! We were supposed to visit Maui in Summer of 2020 for a Sweet 16, ended up celebrating a Sweet 18 August 2022 😂, it was 22 of us, 12 adults and 10 kids ranging from 10-19. We did alot, but did missed the most Western part of Island, we did the Luhau in Lahaina, we missed the parts of Road to Hana, due to parking and turned back from the hidden Red Sand Beach, visited Volcano and the Dry Lava Rocks at end of Road near Makena Beach State Park, we stayed at Wailea. I'm definitely going back to visit the places I missed, do the back Road to Hana, do more Lahaina area, perhaps watch Sunset from Volcano Summit and than Visit Waikiki & Pearl Harbor at end of trip on way back to State side.
