I had the pleasure of meeting Rupert twice, and each time he was the real deal, he would really just sit there and chat with you while he rung up your order. I remember going in one day with a network hub under my arm that installing later that day, and he actually knew about computer networking a bit and we talked about it lol. This had to be like 1995.

Man I loved Rupert's skits so much as a kid. So when my parents visited New York in the early 90's (from the UK) I pestered them to go get a photo of them with him. They had no clue who he was or why I wanted the photo. Still have it today and the awkwardness it contains is Kodak Gold!

Rupert Fun Facts: Rupert appeared on the Late Show 401 times, more than any other non-staffer (or staffer, for that matter, besides Paul). One of the Fun with Rupert segments had Dave and Rupert trading places. Someone faxed me a note claiming that there’s a complete compilation of the FwR remotes. I don’t buy it. Lastly, Rupert was (and maybe still is, I don’t know; he blocked me from entering the Deli after I five-finger-discounted some cash from his register some years ago. There are purportedly photos) a great guy. Despite his love for Englebert.

I grew up throughout all of the 80’s and 90’s and was a big Dave fan. So much so that I had a cake at my high school graduation open house with a caricature of Dave with my own top 10 list on it. I also went to college for television and film production. But I grew up in the Midwest, and didn’t first get to NYC for even the first time until late 2004. NYC has so much to do, that it took me until my 4th visit just last year to get tickets for the Ed Sullivan Theater. Which was with Stephen Colbert by that time. Who I do love a lot too. But I stopped by the Hello Deli beforehand when I did. Rupert was there, and my girlfriend and I got some sandwiches and talked briefly with him. It was surreal. I know he’s not a celebrity like Tom Hanks or Julia Roberts, but for someone like me who grew up watching all of Dave’s bits with him, it was pretty darn cool.

AH HA HA..! Other than the interesting but kinda unsettling hit man story, I laughed all the way through this. I was looking forward to hearing Rupert's take. If I'm not mistaken, the reason they stopped Fun With Rupert was because some guy was getting ready to stick him with a shiv. Miss and appreciate you, bro. Will definitely make a special trip to Hello Deli if I'm ever in NYC.

P.S. What are the details of the shiv story? Who was the man threatening him and why? Do you (or anyone) know?
@rocketreindeer Жыл бұрын
@@DanielleCyr1 Hmm.. I've seen Dave talk about it, the video is on here, but I might have to search to really find it. They were pulling some wacky stunt and Rupert said, "Uh, Dave?" kind of under his breath, over the headset, and Dave was all, "yes Rupert?" or something, and Rupert said, "this guy's got a knife." And I think Dave asked him to repeat it, and he said, "he's got a knife." So Dave was like, "OH oh," and ended it. He explained this to answer people's questions about why they hadn't done "Fun With Rupert" for a long stretch. Dave didn't want to get Rupert killed or maimed, and I think he added that suddenly it didn't seem hilarious any more. I read somewhere that Sal from Impractical Jokers got hit twice. It's a fine line balancing being wacky and making sure everybody's safe and Dave didn't want to go there understandably.

The segments where Rupert followed Dave’s instructions left me unable to breathe. He might have been afraid of heights but he wasn’t afraid of much else. The Hello Deli is first on my list when I get to NYC, I literally don’t have an important second location to visit; maybe Times Square.

Rupert, your segments were probably the best comedy bits of the whole show. And that's saying a lot because Dave's show was probably the best late night show of all time (well, allowing for Johnny Carson being of another generation and probably in a class by himself)!

One of the things I've always lamented about LSSC is that they don't incorporate the area into the show the way LSwDL did. Not that it should be expected, but by comparison LSSC might as well be shot in Moab, Utah.

Yeah Stephen is funny but like a lot of today's stuff, it tends to be more canned or premade like a TV dinner. Just not the same fluid alive feeling ...like the unrehearsed laughs of Dave and crew reacting to stuff going sideways.
