As someone that spends a fair amount of time looking at pro audio equipment, I'm well aware of Rupert Neve's reputation. He's a legend in the pro audio world, so I went into this one quietly confident that it would be good.

I was sure you were going to rip this to shreds, but You loved the sound and that's all that maters to me. I do music mixing as a hobby and I'm new to headphone amps, but want something transparent with no added frequencies and the balanced inputs are exactly what I need with my UA Apollo audio interface. I have been looking at the Little Labs Monitor and this one and having a hard time deciding. Your honesty has helped me get closer to spending $500 on a straight forward no frills unit for what I need. I'm hoping to find a review like yours for the Little Labs Monitor too. Thank You

The power-numbers are unreliable for that purpose, because the volume you are getting is related to the level of gain, not the power. The power is then relevant to whether it distorts/clips at that given level of gain under a given load. Same reason you can bi-amp using fx. a 400w class D amp for the lows and a 15w tube amp for the highs, without running into trouble: because the gain is the same.

@Club Soda I can concur with Trong... I was skeptical of the improvements going in... from the THX 887 amp... but it is next level as he said. It's totally worth the price point over the JDS Labs Atom or any of the THX Amps... despite of it's lower power output. I've never had my expectations subverted so hard by a headphone amp.

I was sporting a set of Sen HD650's through a Scarlet Solo DAC. Sounded decent, but was on the hunt for a good amp that I could grow with. I randomly stumbled upon this amp on amazon and knew of the reputation behind Rupert Neve gear. Perked my interest, but wasn't sure if this was out of my league or not. This review made me roll the dice and pick one up. It was delivered today and let me say this. HOLY MOTHER OF JESUS. Clinical really does to mind!!! Please excuse me while I listen to my entire music library on repeat. This amp is incredible. Buy it, thank this review later.

@@odd-looking-dude Is it good though? If clinical means I would hear the songs with more clarity but I would not love the sound I hear then what is the point of it?
@odd-looking-dude
@odd-looking-dude 3 жыл бұрын
@@akashafofo6939 paired with the RS1 (which have a slightly warm sound) the result is clarity, not a clinical sound. Other Grados like the 325 have a brighter more clinical sound which may not pair well with the amp. I have changed the pads for a denser larger foam, which has reduced soundstage a little and given the bass a bit more body. For my ears these parts together give clear, controlled, slightly warm sound. I love it. If you like banging bass sounds to dominate maybe other kit would be better 😁

I first heard this little amp at CanJam last year and I can say, hands down I spent the most time at their booth. I didn’t go into the summit-fi room, but I will say, in the main hall, the only set ups I liked more were the ~$3000 Ampandsound paired with ZMF’s flagship at their booth, and the $12,000 Chord Dave

This amp is so much fun with LCD-2C. I feel like it pushes so much detail to LCD-2C meanwhile LCD-2C's dark tone and warmth make those details so easy and fun to listen. You wouldn't say LCD-2C is missing details after you listen with this one. Also the bass response of LCD-2C with RNHP felt amazing to me.

@geucamole
@geucamole 2 жыл бұрын
@@RaiseYourFamily Volume knob position depends on how many volts your DAC output is, usually I find RNHP on the loud side, so if I need to address that I use my hugo 2 tt as pre-amp. I thought past 1-2 oclock in the knob is quite loud with 2 volts fed into it from qutest. I think that with a decent DAC this amp will squeeze out every detail LCD-2C can offer. This am has a certain way of presenting the music, I would say try it and see for yourself.

@@RaiseYourFamily for under $1000 (new) this has to be a top LCD series pairing in my book, did a LCD2 demo with a more expensive Burson Soloist and some other amps next to it and I preferred the Neve. Over $1000 new I prefer Violectric. I don't think Zeos is doing the sound much justice, it's very dynamic and everything's imaged spot on.

Thanks for the awesome content! Education + entertainment for those who stopped caring about 'quality' around the time 'napster' came along but are now coming to their senses after two decades to listen to quality sound... I need to push volume to 3 o'clock with my 600ohm beater AKG K141s (from early 90s...) with jazz/classical. The manual says the headphone outputs (2) have a Dynamic Range of 115 dB (A-Weighted), a THD+N of 0.0009%, and a maximum output level +15 dBu. Do you think it is worth investing in the Rupert Neve RNHP over the headphone outputs of the Focusrite? Thanks and cheers!

Just bought a pair of 7520 from Sweetwater for $290. Closed back, dynamic, sensitivity 108 db, 24 ohms, VERY easy to drive. I'm using the "ifi nano black label" from my smartphone and everything sounds great. The 7520's are a reference headphone made by Sony since 2010, very little color added. Bass, mids, and highs all sound killer. I'm amazed I was able to buy these for $290, a steal imo. The 7520's were banned in Europe because they can melt your eardrums, you do need to be careful with them. Sony has been making excellent headphones since the mid 80's, these are underrated and a fantastic value. Definitely flying under the radar.

I mean this isn't a bad buy AT ALL if it matches the THX 789 performance. The reason being the THX 789 is for all intents and purposes extinct in terms of future supply. They're going for around the price of this anywho whenever they pop up (maybe a hair less). Honestly, I think I might consider getting this since The Magni 3 I have is annoyingly powerful. I can't get the knob past 9 if software (PC) is firing at 100% volume. Actually would like to use my volume knob without the precision of stacking pins one on top of the other.

I am thinking between THX 789 and RNHP for my HD600, but I don't have an opportunity to try them. I need something that is honest and detailed, a workhorse without any enhancements. Thank you very much! Cheers!

I have experience with both. The 789 does not keep up with the dynamics of the RNHP and the rnhp picks apart the music better. The 789 is like a $200 amp where the rnhp is priced appropriately. It's probably the last one you'll need, save for changing the amp flavour to suit certain headphones.

Kellan MacKenzie I don’t have the amp, I’ve never looked it up. At CanJam, that’s just what the guy at the both told me when I asked about the brochure which reads “24v dc input for use with 6 watt power supply (included) or a 24V, 0.25A battery (not included)” He said a lot of professionals using them on sets and live venues need to use the unit with battery power. Although I’m sure that battery bank would as large as a car battery, and to actually use it portable you would need to lug it around in a backpack, but still possible and needed for some use cases. If you want more info on actually finding the right battery, I would just call and talk to them.

I demo'd this thing versus the burson soloist x3, the violectric v200 that both cost easily twice. This thing is a total winner, pulls apart the mids, stages well, dynamics are great. This is much preferable to any thx amp if you ask me. The bass is a little light for me, but I prefer the bass flavoured violectric v200. In other qualities this thing easily keeps up with these expensive amps. The burson if you want better staging and have the money. I think the value proposition you're making here is just wrong, you can't compare it to the THX or $100 amps.

Idk about headphones but if you really want to see the power output you need to get an oscilloscope with at least 10M Ohm probe and then probe into a different section of the system/circuit, find the phase shift and calculate the true power across the frequency spectrum. Generate a Nyquist plot if you want something fancy to show. New headphones have internal amps, filters or some other type of circuits so that whatever the spec of the output terminals of an analog circuit can be changed due to the load connected to it. Not sure how the manufacturer specifies the output characteristics of their products but most of them uses non- inductive-resistive load to characteristic the parameters. I am not into headphones and audio but I am just talking about analog circuit analysis. The power rating and ohm value really don't tell you much. Distortion across a few frequencies ranges usually caused by the frequency response curve is no longer the one specified due to whatever is on the load side. Distortion at high volume (amplification) typically caused by transistors at saturation region and no longer operates in the linear region due to the shift of Q point, which can be affected by the load etc. All that mess can't really be analyzed without an oscilloscope. The On and Off "leak-through" seems to have something to do with the improper AC coupling technique in the circuit. I can't tell why they make it like this until I see the schematic.

I had the THX SP200 amp. When i got the RNHP i was surprised how much better it sounded to my ear. The only way i can describe it is it was more colorful, more lush, more full and more detailed. It was difinitely an upgrade and worth its price. Punched above its price actually. On The Master Switch website it won "Best Solid-State Headphone Amp" and they have some pretty nice amps on that list. I know its for prostudio use (it has a screw hole on the bottom) but isnt that a good thing? I know a lot of companies use that in their marketing, even when thier product does not make the grade. But who can doubt that this does? It sounds fantastic! I got it hooked up to a Schiit Bifrost and they compliment each other very well. The Helios scales well to it. My question is what is an upgrade to this? Will it sound like this or different? I'm afraid of loosing this sound lol.

The Rupert Neve RNHP doesn't have a sound. It is actually designed to not colour the sound. It is made for use in a studio as a tool. It's only job is to amplify headphones with a strong yet very clean signal. It doesn't get more transparent than the RNHP.

@@BunnyslippersEUC Really? ive heard it described as a warm amp, i've used it to help control bright headphones
@BunnyslippersEUC
@BunnyslippersEUC 3 жыл бұрын
@@antpage2 No it's not warm. It just delivers proper amplification. The other amp people think is neutral is just very thin sounding, without lots of clean current. I have the Aune B1s classA amplifier. Which is very warm sounding in classA mode. My Musical Fidelity classA is somewhere between the B1S and the Rupert. So slightly warm sounding, but crazy open sounding compared to the Rupert. The highs are sweet sounding not peaky on the Musical Fidelity. The resolution in the detail and the resolution in dynamics isn't as good as the Rupert. My Cyan tube amplifier is just insanely coloured. Very warm chewy open relax sounding. Edit You stealth edit your post. So I edit my post. Some headphones can sound harsh in the highs, because they aren't powered properly. No the Rupert isn't warm sounding. My bright Ultrasone Pro 900i sound is U-shape and remains that way on the Rupert.

@@antpage2 you think it's a warm amp, that's why it becomes a warm amp. all solid state amps sound the same. get the cheap one. in the end it's all electronic signals in wires we hear on the end of headphones. same with dacs. same with balanced hype. the only difference comes from headphones. but no company says otherwise of course they need money

Reducing volume level in the computer/software is reducing bit depth. Gain staging should be done at the analog stage/at the interface output not in DAW master/spotify software level. Same goes for audio over HDMI and Optical, 100% digital level to the amplifier is best. When using a headphone jack/motherboard audio/analog outputs distortion starts outweighing volume benefit between 80-85%

Wow, looks like something I'd build! Build the guts, but then just stuff it all into a readily available project box instead of paying to have an actual enclosure made. And that on/off switch! I have tons of those! Bought them on Digikey for something I needed a switch for, not realizing they were so tiny because I was lazy and didn't fully check the specs.

Oh Zeos.... Please know your equipment when you dive into the pro audio area. Neve is pronounce Neeeve for one, and his consoles/channel strips/mic pres have been used for many years in major studios. I had the pleasure running one in Nashville for a period of my life. Still love your videos man, but this piece of gear is not meant for consumers.... Well, generally. If you were coming off a console, protools HD setup, or even a high end DAW using a good interface the output is going to be much more powerful than a dap, computer, whatever so there's no need for high power output for studio headphones. They're a complete different beast. Even my RME Firface 800s output would about smash any preamp, or any other average Joe's media player and an SSL or Neve console has even more headroom than that. Again, just a different beast meant for something other than at home use.
