One of the problems that the last 50 years has brought us is the total inability of the voting public in advanced economies to imagine what sort of society they would like to live in that does not revolve around consumerism.

You keep getting better. Thank you Rupert. I have been listening to your message for about 5 years now. I’ve been motivated to stop eating meat. I’ve stopped working in order to co create a climate emergency centre @1planetabingdon and we are working towards preparing for the collapse with our community. We just celebrated our 3rd Birthday 🎉 I have been arrested, hurt by handcuffs and prison officers, been in segregation and spent 105 days in prison in 2022. 3 different prisons. Too many police cells to remember. I take time out to watch clips on KZbin and found this one. Please consider visiting us in Abingdon, we would love to host a screening 🥰💚🙏🏻🐞🌸✊🏾✊🏼✊

Nature will cull us, for not having the sense, long ago, to assume we were so special, amongst the animal kingdom, to not put the brakes on this 65, or so, years ago. It's still taboo to even talk about it. Planetary abuse, in this "age of consequences", is simply due to the human animal, in ecological 'overshoot.'

How far through your day would you get if they were illegal? Probably not past breakfast. The problem is immense because we have designed every aspect of our lives around fossil fuels and extractive economies.
@orion1816Ай бұрын
@@guapochino140 Then I guess I'll just have to go without breakfast... at least for a few days. We have to find another way because fossil fuels are guaranteed to cause planetary extinction of all life. The thing is we have the other ways forward and have had them for decades but we are lazy and refuse to give up fossil fuels. We can have breakfast without them. We know exactly how to build a society without fossil fuels but there is no sufficient incentive to get there. ->Outlaw fossil fuels!

You're still vague regarding what's coming and I think I understand why. You need to calibrate the amount of truth so that dispair doesn't overwhelm part of your audience.
@sunpwrdАй бұрын
Climate change is caused by burning fossil fuels. It is easy to switch your electricity at home to renewable energy (RE). If you have the roof for it, install solar. It pays for itself over time. If solar isn't an option, buy RE from your utility or a third party supplier. If you drive a car, switch to an EV. They reached cost parity years ago and can do everything a gas vehicle can do, but better. You can buy a new Model 3 Tesla for about the cost of a Corolla. Used EVs are under $10,000. Do you want to force everyone in the world to drive EVs? I sure do. We are going to do that within 25 years. New gas vehicles will not be sold in China, Europe, and most of the US after 2035. All new vehicles after that will be electric and powered from an ever-greening grid. Existing used gas vehicles will age out over the following decade, and after that, essentially all ground transportation will be electric. You can't force anyone to be vegan, but we can, and will, force everyone to drive EVs. That's a powerful thing that folks need to recognize. But this doesn't happen soon enough if progressives continue buying gas cars. Remember, when you buy a gas car, the factory makes another. Going forward, everyone on our side of the political divide should stop buying new gas cars. Over 15 million new vehicles were sold in the US last year and 90% burn gas. That means several million progressives bought new gas cars. That has to stop. Keep whatever you have now and start researching which EV will serve your purposes, figure out where you will charge it, then save until you can get it. Buying and burning gasoline is, for most American, the most harmful thing you do in your entire life. You used to not have a choice, but affordable EVs have been available for over 13 years. Make it happen.
@guapochino140Ай бұрын
I am offgrid solar (and water) because I can and since I can I think it's important to take responsibility for my consumption (as well as waste) but the world will not be saved by selling a billion EVs. They are not under 10k used in most of the world and 10k is more than most people's annual income. Besides that small issue, there is no way that the world can supply 1 billion EVs and all the infrastructure that needs to go with it by 2030 or whatever date you want to pick to save the planet. Even if it could, it would require massive increases in electricity generation. The grid would need to be completely overhauled. Not only for EV power, but also for all the other clean technologies that are also supposed to come online by 2030/40/50 that will again put demands on the grid that it just can't meet. It would take decades. You sound like you are heavily invested in EVs and cars in general. What are some other ways to reduce emissions? If you think the only way the save the planet is by turbo-charged green capitalism, then the political divide is not how you imagine it and you may not have watched any of Rupert Read's videos. BTW, the most harmful thing any American can do in their entire life is have children.

Sorry to break it to you but Your Tesla and solar panels are not even as useful as shuffling deckchairs on the Titanic.
@sunpwrdАй бұрын
@@guapochino140 "What are some other ways to reduce emissions?" I broke my two comments into two. The one you responded to was on energy and transportation, but the other one was on population. When you read that one, you'll see that I talked about reducing population to 3-4 billion and provided methods already in use by more progressive nations. I got my vasectomy in 1976 at age 23 after reading "The Limits to Growth" and "The Population Bomb". Later in life, I endowed 3 vasectomy funds through Planned Parenthood in OR and CA. I also help fund World Vasectomy Day every year. This is a single day in the fall when several hundred doctors in over 30 countries perform thousands of vasectomies for men who otherwise could not afford it. On population, I walk my talk. You summarily dismissed my discussion on transportation without any evidence. It's clear you are not involved in transportation or you would know that what I said was actually happening. Because Tesla is forcing the entire global auto industry to switch, or lose market share, any observer of the industry can see that hundreds of billions are being spent to secure access to battery elements and manufacturing of same. People who cannot afford a new car are not the problem because they do not buy new gas cars. Those who do buy new gas cars are the problem. Given the lower cost of EVs, 100% of people who can afford a new gas car can afford an EV. I urge you to read more on the burgeoning EV market. It's much more robust than you indicated and it absolutely will be able to supply 75 million EVs/year by 2035. Look at Norway to see how it will go. They are already over 95% of all new car sales being EV and expect that to hit 100% next year.
@sunpwrdАй бұрын
@@roo3515 Actually, ending all manufacturing of ICE (internal combustion engines) is a huge win for the climate. Close to half of CO2 pollution is from ground based transport. Electrifying that, plus greening the grid is a big part of the solution. If you disagree, please tell us your solution. Or are you one of those who crap on others' ideas, but have none of your own?
