I totally sympathize with this woman, and I sense that the people who were laughing also understand. I used to be besieged by thoughts... constant, unwelcome, tiresome, pathological thoughts... The awful narrator that just won't shut up. You don't have to live this way! What it took for me was a sustained meditation practice and a concerted effort outside meditation to maintain awareness of the thoughts, to not identify with them, and to focus on the quiet spaces between the thoughts. It's important not to judge them or reject them, just let them be and don't follow them. I remember the first time I went for a walk and my mind was quiet... really quiet, and all experience became more vivid. It was like walking out of prison... What incredible joy! I'm so much happier now that I can turn my thoughts off (or down, at least). Highly recommended ;-)

Not even the need to turn off the thoughts i would say. But to just let them be by realizing... 👀👻 And YES... the laughter of the others shows that they are also familiar with this sort of divine game of hide and seek, getting lost and finding your SELF again... and again... 😍

I can relate to her style of thinking, this was so touching and helpful to watch. I have come to recognize that my mind has a tendency to see things very black and white. So in my mind, thinking 'cancels out' being, when the mind sees being as the goal and thinking as the obstacle. For me what helps me with this challenge is to recognize that because being is constant and ever present, my thoughts do not 'cancel out' my being. The two are not opposed to each other, as Rupert is gently trying to point out. I needed to recognize the logic that something which is ever present cannot be canceled out by something that comes and goes, just as the clouds don't cancel out the sky. This has helped me also to release my grip on constantly feeling I must control my thoughts and correct them, which has been so helpful in learning to be at ease with my own mind. So grateful for this clip and for this woman sharing.

I love Rupert and I respect his approach to teaching non duality but sometimes it seems like he’s so unwilling to meet people where they are and he ends up talking in circles. Yes, we are all pure being. We are all pure awareness. Intellectually knowing this is one thing but being able to embody that and make that our moment to moment experience can be challenging and it’s clear this woman was simply saying she finds it challenging to feel the freedom of her being because she feels as if her being is always clouded by thoughts. I am sure we can all certainly relate to that regardless of how well we know the truth of our being or not.

Almost all people desire is sense of permanent euphoria and that's where money making comes in. All techniques are there detach yourself from thoughts, but what if thoughts can be used to write a book or maybe a journal that nobody ever reads? Thoughts are energy and it is a rule of science that energy just cannot be quenched, it has to be transformed. Most teachers fail to tell people that it is one's own mission to find ways to transform the thought energy into something. All they teach is ignore thoughts or keep watching them as they come and go. The struggle will go on till people mature their minds enough to recognise that thoughts can be converted into benign forms like playing music, art or just writing a short story WITHOUT worrying about the audience. Just do it for the sake of energy transformation or thoughts can make one insane after a point.

I don’t know if she “got it,” as intensely as those watching the interaction “got it.” When I first heard Rupert, I guess about ten years ago, I just shook my head and thought that compared with the great celebrated gurus and mystics, this is just a circus sideshow. And, then I realized how special his approach is. And, for those westerners who for many decades tortured themselves to wear holy beads and dub the persona of a tortured wandering monk in search of salvation, meeting the teachings of Rupert is a great relief, and the end of the journey that has completed its full circle.

Thank you. I think that this is where Eckhart Tolle's description of the "pain body" really helps. Our trauma, or how anxiety resides in the nervous system, will "relieve" itself via the distraction of thought. The volume/noise of the pain can be so loud that it's often too much to simply feel... to observe. It feels like suffocating without the narrative voice. I'm not sure what the threshold is exactly where one gets beyond the conceptual and gains the capacity to BE a step back "behind" the stream of thinking and "watch" it, but it DOES eventually happen through practice. I think of it often like emerging from drowning: after you've come up for air enough times, even if you go back to drowning, you at least know what it was like to NOT be drowning, and that sustains you as you learn to swim. After a while it just kind of feels like watching echos of a lifelong habit play itself out. I think the subconscious mind feeds this stuff into the waking brain until your various systems realize you don't need the safety blanket (or to complete the analogy: the life vest) anymore.

I had been where she is. Totally relate. My answer to her is: There are kinds of people who are like this woman. They are VERY much like antennas that keep being bombarded by the thoughts. Some people never experience that kind of torture and are not able to relate. Good news for this lady: She is very intuitive, had visions or prophetic dreams when she was a child. I can guarantee that 💯 %! That’s why she has that constant chatter in her head. When she was born she was not taught to deal with it. Therefore it continued for years kept pilling up and getting worse. Sorting out of this mess will take time and persistence. She will see that it gets better and better. The only thing she needs to do is to keep consuming spiritual literature and all info she can find. What will happen in the end will shock her. It will be fire, rockets and fireworks. She will find herself totally transformed, different preferences in food, different temper, habits, personality. It will be something. People like her like volcanoes. They stay hibernated but once they are awaken, angles will stay still in owe

So, to this lady, who essentially identifies with her thoughts, thinking thoughts are I. That I is who think, I is not who thinks. Thought arises in front of I, I is the observer of thought. Letting thoughts be what they are, which is not I, is how you leave them alone. Attach to them, like identity, and voila; suffering. I have thoughts, therefor, they are not I. What I have is not I. Thoughts do not arise from I, but in front of I. I am not my thoughts even though they may be mine, they are not I.

Thoughts are like the disturbance in the clear surface of the pond. The more we try to arrest their motion, the more we stir them up. When we believe that we must first stop all motion on the pond to be what we are, then our grip tightens and our attempts to quiet them intensify. We find ourselves to be running about in the pond slipping wildly at all its motion for which we are to cause. For those who have conditioned the body and nervous system in this dynamic, it is useful to redirect ones attention, first to the breath, then to the pure experience of sensation which gives space to lean back into your being, leaning back into the seat in the movie theater. You allow the commentary to go on as it will naturally follow what you have trained it to do. When we leave our thought alone and just allow them to be what they are, we cease to add momentum to them and they come to settle of their own accord.

One thing that helped me and anxiety I had was to not place any importance on positive or negative experiences in terms of my triggers. For example it was equally important not to be happy if I did not experience anxiety as it was not to be sad if I did. Your brain is lazy and thoughts go to where you train them to go. The more you think of particular things the more you think of those things. Like revising for an exam. To overcome anxiety or overthinking you need to train your brain to not go to those places anymore. The only way is to not pay attention to those thoughts and over time you think less about them

Much respect to Mr. Spira. However, I feel like he could have handled it better. For instance, he could've told the lady to "practice observing thoughts with detachment" or "practice losing interest in the content of thoughts". I personally think he was a bit "too direct" in this video. Especially given the fact that the lady seems to not have an advanced knowledge in Non-Duality/Self-Inquiry. Yes, the character is on a screen but the game on the screen is "The Matrix" and the 3D character therein has to get rid of some flying 3D objects that pop-up in front of him (Thoughts in our case) in order to not be too distracted/agitated to decipher the secret programming code (Resting as awareness/beingness/I Amness) that will reveal to him that he is indeed a character in a game, on a TV screen. (Tried my best to make a somewhat reasonable analogy lol!)

Yes. Exploring spirituality adds more to think about, which perhaps defeats the purpose or may be part of the process. I think the "I am" explanation is faulty. On the one hand, we all have the normal sense of "I am". So, how do we distinguish that egoic "I am" which we have had since our egos were formed from the "I am" Spira so often uses and says was also there from the beginning. I really think the terminology is confusing. The Buddhist's say there is no self, therefore no "I am" in their explanation. If you ask who am I and find nothing , then why say " I am" anything at all?
@NeverFlameNeverTiltАй бұрын
@sanekabc thanks for your reply. The non stop thinking that I speak of, is at it's best the quietest at the point I am thinking "what am I ?".I cannot stop myself from thinking about that , just as I cannot stop the "busy thoughts* either. I am able to outwardly not allow the thoughts to be me. Inside where you can't lie to yourself is where the battle really rages for me.
@snakedogmanАй бұрын
"I am cursed" is just a thought. "I have to find a solution" is another thought. "What am I?" is a great question to let simmer in your mind though. Many people have found awakening doing just that.
@snakedogmanАй бұрын
@@sanekabc I don't think Buddhists say there is no self, and therefore there is no "I am". "No self" simply points to the experience that there's no "doer" or thinker inside our heads (or anywhere else) influencing reality, even if it often feels as if there is. "Self" is just a word, with no inherent meaning or substance. Where is your "sefl"? Can you point to it? How big is it? What color is it? No, that doesn't make sense right? Because the word "self" just points to a concept and doesn't point to anything tangible. "I am" points to the most foundational direct experience of being, which needs no "self".
@sanekabcАй бұрын
@@snakedogman You are right. Buddhism doesn't discuss "I am". I just use the terms self and I interchangeably so I didn't make myself clear, But the idea of no self is central to Buddhism. To me, any mention of I or, ego, or self are interchangeable concepts.

Usually the tension is throughout the body, but especially around the head and neck.

I am me. How close is me? Very close. Can me be any closer? Have I ever not been me? Who or what would I be, were I not me? How would I know I am that? What would I call myself were I that other? Here, it seems the main issue is that she views thinking as not being. All is being. It is similar to saying God is everything, and infinite, but this thing here came from somewhere else, outside of God. Further to believe that thinking is a problem. The idea of thinking being a problem is a thought you have about thinking. Stop. When thinking occurs, observe it until it tires itself out like a child playing by itself until it is exhausted. While observing the mind “me” is being, and when the mind is silent, still you are being.

There is a yoga of stilling thought: Raja Yoga. See Vivekananda’s book of that name. It is based on the yoga sutras of Patanjali, and the slogan is, “yoga chitta vritti niroda” which means yoga is the means of stilling the mind. This is the yoga of breath control, mantra repetition, and samadhi- the cessation of all thought. It is a path of realization- “when the river is agitated, you cannot see the bottom; but when it is still you can see the bottom and not the water.” A paraphrase of one of the Raja Yoga teachings. The water symbolizes the mind. Mr. Spira is right- he doesn’t teach that path. But many do. He teaches JNANA Yoga- the yoga of direct self realization.

How I dealt with this was pragmatically. I asked myself what use was the thought? Does it serve to enlighten, inform, uplift, warn, or offer a choice or change? Is it ACTIONABLE? Can it be manifested in reality through me, and should it be? I still have thoughts I dont value, but when they present themselves, and I agree that they dont serve me or anyone else in a good way, they go away when I turn my attention away. And that valuation is what makes ir easy to turn attention away. This wasnt Mr. Spiras best. Im a fan but anyone can make mistakes and I think he did here. If overthinking isnt his speciality, he should have said that at the beginning, not the end. Sometimes you can lead people to their own insights, and sometimes they cant find it and it needs to be given.

Her wanting rid of thoughts is her being, her suffering and believing these thoughts are impinging on her freedom is still being! The solution is to realise that everything that is happening can only be observed from being, nothing can happen away from being. She needs to allow the thoughts to come and go as they please and not try to get rid of them. The ego is strong in this one😂

Your thoughts aren't you. Just like your hunger to eat, isn't you. If you simply step back, you will notice that your hunger is automatic and is a part of your body and mind acting in unison for a desired outcome. And in this case, to eat. You have a choice to make then. You can simply observe the hunger, this feeling, and appreciate it. Notice its role. Or you can fear it, thinking if you do not fulfill this desire, something bad may happen. One will lead to understanding, the other will lead to loss of self-control or misdirection. Work to be with your thoughts, like you would be with a child. Patient and understanding. Do not push them away. Pandoras box was formed by attempting to capture chaos and control it. The solution was always to allow chaos to flow naturally but use order to understand it and create from it.

Is there a difference between hunger and unwanted thoughts?
@inspirehealthandhope2 ай бұрын
@mikuspalmis well yes, and no. Yes, because hunger, in an obvious way, is a primary facet of your survival. And if not addressed, eventually will cause death. And no, it's not different because both are automatic, and having a hunger feeling can come up unnecessarily, just like unnecessary thoughts. For example, satiation can be withheld if a person consumes a lot of fructose containing foods. They may have eaten enough to satisfy the energy requirements of the body but have been unable to trigger the satiation response, which will cause an individual to consume more food than is necessary. With a step back and careful consideration, the individual who's having a difficult time getting "full" can observe the hunger and simultaneously understand that they've consumed enough food. They can be patient with their hunger pangs as well as adjust their diet accordingly to remove excess fructose containing foods. In a sense, bringing order to their chaotic feelings. Not by containing the hunger but by understanding its origin and being patient with it.

Wouldn''t it be a better strategy to tell her that she doesn't have to follow every thought to its end? She clearly knows that she get caught in thought, but she tries to solve it by thinking. And the thinking about the thinking only leads to more thinking, and the self is constructed in the process.

Just observe each thoughts like leaves flowing down a river. Remain neutral and don't judge or don't label anything anything = this can feel so blissful. All the best, Lee PS Soon as we or the ego judges a thought as negative, it amplifies it more and more (normally until we re okay with it not being okay, paradoxically).

I would love to see Rupert Spira on psychedelics. That would be a powerful speach afterwards. Might begin to talk like Terence McKenna. "The mushroom said to me once, that you're awareness alone".

I'm fairly certain that you're joking (and it is funny), nut mushrooms - or any substances - and their attending psychedelic experiences are entirely conceivable and perceivable, meaning their nature is duality. The nature of Nonduality is stillness and silence _ only; all else is duality.

Who is the entity being bothered by thoughts? How can "you" leave thoughts alone, when there is no "you"?

There's alotta thinkin goin on in the comments as well as in this talk on how to not think. Surely there's a simpler way, even if it takes work. People need to have somethin to look forward to on a daily basis where they can release and just... "be".

Ramana Mararashi clearly said in the analogy of the rope and and snake you either see the snake (person/world) or the rope (being/god). There is no seeing of both simultaneously Which contradicts a lot of teachers who suggest you see the world as a person and retain the understanding that you are (often expressed as in the background) the being. Ramana clearly says no this is not true.

I felt like she was miss understood and mocked. Not knowing is the journey. It also brings to mind that people often take Rupert’s words as gospel and this only splinters his teachings. Being is being but how we relate to it is only known by I.

I feel that there is sometimes a more direct way for each person depending on the uniqueness of their makeup and what works for some isn't the easiest for all but ideally it'd be great to be able to have a set of methods to match a person to one of, instead of beating them over the head with the one that works for you or even most because you feel like they're making things more difficult when really they just need more help or help in a particular way.

A random thought. Journey begins with the question, Who am I? and ends in knowing/realizing that there is no I. Life is a constant flux, like this music, it flows, with no beginning nor any direction, it has no origin. Why to bother when it begins or when will it end, when we happen to find ourselves in this world, but we define ourselves in consciousness with a beginning, the day we are born, and the day we will die, but is there a death. If it is, how do we know what death is when we never have had the first hand experience of it. Our conception is based on what we have heard of it from people, but not with the actual reality of it. We aren't born in the world but born out of it. We were enfolded in the universe and now unfolded, and we are gonna dissolve right back in it, like waves. Attributing an independent existence to a wave is silly. Duality exist in our consciousness. Who are we? Let this question starve itself, exhaust itself, merge itself! ( if possible, be kind to animals. Don't contribute to their mass killing in the name of food when deep down we know, in eating them we only seek gustatory gratification. Would you take your dog to the slaughterhouse to put them down? No, despite him having run the course of his life! Humane slaughter is only an oxymoron because we exclude the conscious experience of the victim in our base and hasty estimate of humane slaughter.)

Sometimes the detriment of the thinking isn't recognizing seriously. But in the case of senses we can understand the difficulty of escaping from the negativity. For example, I am living near the chemical factory or rubbish dump and I smell a stench. Or I hear always blasphemous words around of me. The same we can say about seeing, tasting and touching. Is it possible in such circumstances keeps our focus on "I" but not on aggressive and negative experience? I think it is impossible.
@tanakaren18222 ай бұрын
I think such circumstances are forms of spiritual guerilla training! What you said makes me think of those four people who were at Ground Zero of the Nagasaki and Hiroshima atomic bombs, yet were not injured in any way. Enlightend!

Such a beautiful question and line of questioning. Hope she knows that they were laughing with her. So precious. Go see "Free Guy". That movie, I think, tackles what it means to feel like an NPC (Non-Playable-Character) in life. I feel like that's in the same vane as this conversation. I understand TOTALLY where she's coming on. I've been freaking isolated for years. I can't even get engagement online, let alone in my "personal life". I guess I've had to go through this isolation to get to a deeper plane of meditative contemplation that I would not be able to access if I had a typical 9-5, wife and kids, white picket fence. Maybe? Anybody else feel similar? Am I just a NPC, thinking that I have autonomy over my life, and just stuck in an illusion? Does any of this fucking matter? (I still have a lot to learn... that's why I'm here).

I wish Rupert could answer questions more directly rather than using elaborate metaphors. She asks whether she's truly present if she's constantly thinking. Well the answers simply no, if you're thinking - you're not present! You're away with the fairies in an imagined wonderland. Then the thought stream stops and you snap back to reality. Why does he talk about a character on a screen and really abstract hard to grasp metaphors? It's not so difficult that it even requires such a metaphor surely? Or am I misunderstanding? Then he completely confuses her, asking her so many vague questions. Ok I think I get it.. he's not even talking about presence, he's talking about 'being'. Okay .. he has a completely different dichotomy to someone like Eckhart Tolle. What a poor lady, she had a genuine question about presence and wanting help to reduce her constant thoughts and he literally told her to just stop worrying about it and thinking is good. Thinking IS good, but the realisation that you are not your thoughts and focussing on awareness is the advice this lady needed, what she needs is some proper mediation practice.
