I just bought A meditation on I Am and Being Myself. Overwhelmed with a realease of negative energy I cry every time I come across a real enlightened being. Because my being recognized the truth in his words mean more to me than everything I've been thought in the past. Eckhart introduced Rubert on a talk and both are the real deal people make no doubt about it. Spiritual masters exist and we have more pointers than the Buddha as Tolle puts it.

If the world is a great thought in the mind of God, then why does God need to make creatures suffer? Everything suffers either from being eaten alive or dying in pain or old age. Many say that nature is cruel, and it is, so why does God want to perpetuate cruelty?

I am both watching and involved in this manifestation. I have been aware of this since a very young age. Trouble is the part that is involved gets so stuck in emotions. It's gotten better since I'm older but it makes this life so painful. Vedanta and Rupert's talks have been so balancing assisting me to let go of the struggle and involvement.

Yes ..we over emphasize this waking state, and forget the two other states we already know:: waking, plus dream plus deep sleep. The stateless state is thus known as Turiya - simply the fourth (state). Thus Sri Ramana spoke of and pointed this out throughout his talks to devotees and questioners.

How is this not just an exercise in a conceptual fashion to systematically disassociate awareness from its content? Starting from the outer world of sensory perception (gross) to finer and finer grades of mental content (subtle) until awareness alone is? This is what meditation is. But how can this process occur if the senses are not withdrawn (still hearing Rupert speak), still thinking to interpret what has been spoken, still outwardly focused anticipating the next instruction? Perhaps the only reason this meditation succeeds is because of the long pauses of silence between each utterance. The spoken words and the concepts that they convey are mere props when the real process of transcending is occurring in spite of the guide’s participation. This is not self inquiry, this is not contemplation, this is not concentration. This is guided meditation and is only as successful as to the degree that transcending is naturally occurring. Transcending is the experience of non duality. Transcendental Meditation systematically gives the experience of non duality. It does so in the same way this guided meditation does but without the guide and without the props to impede the inward dive of attention to pure subjectivity, pure awareness. I find this a bit ironic given Rupert’s characterization of self inquiry as the direct path to reaching the goal of non duality and meditation as a slower, so called progressive approach. But here he is returning to his early days of meditation. What goes around, comes around?

Indeed very beautiful and moving, particularly the ocean metaphor. But is it not a little too far removed from the traditional Advaita teaching taught by an Indian Swami monk at the Arsha Vidya Gurukulam? Is it on purpose that you don't mention the sacred texts from which all this wisdom is drawn, mainly the Upanishads? And when you say in the teaching that "you don't have … to cultivate these qualities through any effort or discipline of the mind" do you mean to say that non-dual awareness can be gained instantly? That full enlightenment is here and now by simply shifting attention from "the movie" to "the screen"? Is there no need for effort? No need for preparation? No need to cultivate habits of discrimination? No need to cultivate calmness of mind? And what about the lifelong struggle to remove the habit of looking for gratification in this world? You mention Ramana Maharshi. With him particularly, self realization was arrived at with great effort and suffering, not to say him being highly versed in the sacred texts. Are you not going too far?
@curiosity_saved_the_cat
@curiosity_saved_the_cat 6 жыл бұрын
Eyal Orgad "Is there no need for effort?" I believe in one of his other video's he talks about learning to play a musical instrument. Sometimes in order to master an instrument you need to relax certain muscles. Just like in order to see through the veil of the separate self, you need to 'relax' clinging to thoughts that sustain the idea of the separate self. Relaxation is not 'effort' in the conventional sense. In fact, prior to tension it was already there. But indeed, it's a shift of awareness.
@eyalorgad3915
@eyalorgad3915 6 жыл бұрын
These are the words of Ramana Maharshi himself: "3. What is the nature of Awareness? The nature of Awareness is existence-consciousness-bliss 4. When will the realization of the Self be gained? When the world which is what-is-seen has been removed, there will be realization of the Self which is the seer. 5. Will there not be realization of the Self even while the world is there (taken as real)? There will not be. 6. Why? The seer and the object seen are like the rope and the snake. Just as the knowledge of the rope which is the substrate will not arise unless the false knowledge of the illusory serpent goes, so the realization of the Self which is the substrate will not be gained unless the belief that the world is real is removed." (Nan Yar). This is a little different than Mr. Spira's "... to access this peace we do not need to manipulate our experience...." . Is what Mr. Spira's teachings propagate is a kind of a new religion wherein real peace, the ultimate cure to humanity's problems is available by a quick shift of attention? As another commentator has aptly said: "six seconds and feel my PTSD has lifted and I am free." What is not mentioned by Mr. Spira, and for his own reasons, is that to remove the need for gratification in objects, to remove "the belief that the world is real" is not an easy task, sometimes taking a lifelong and very arduous effort.
@curiosity_saved_the_cat
@curiosity_saved_the_cat 6 жыл бұрын
Eyal Orgad: I do not think Mr. Spira’s teachings is a new kind of religion. Nor do I see the difference between what Spira says about a shift of attention and the teachings of Ramana Maharshi. I think the difference is in the word ‘quick’. Coming back to the analogy of learning to play an instrument; in order to be a master in playing the piano, your shoulders, wrists and fingers have to be relaxed. When shoulders, wrists and fingers are tensed up, there’s no (or not enough) freedom to play obviously. Relaxing muscles is a simple shift in attention - simple as in, it’s not very complex and doesn’t require effort - however, this doesn’t mean it can be achieved quickly per se! If after a lifetime of tensing up shoulders (karma), they need to be relaxed, it might be percieved as quite a challenge to let it happen. Judging from my own experience, I find it helpful to compare the path to enlightenment with quiting an addiction. After 20 years of smoking, it’s not easy to just quit. However, all it really takes is insight - not willpower or force (or time, for that matter). For some (perhaps most), it takes a long time of suffering and seeing others suffer, to gather enough insight - so they can quit smoking in an instant. Anytime force, or effort is applied to see the true nature of the Self, another illusion is added to the illusion. The thought that time is required to ‘get there’ is a result of the same illusion. Enlightenment is always there behind the hypnotizing/addictive illusion. It’s the illusion that claims time is required to let the illusion go, so it can remain a little longer. Just one more cigarette and I’ll be calm enough to quit smoking. All of the above is my interpretation of the teachings I’ve come across, including those of Rupert Spira. So of course there’s the possibility I misunderstood.

Eyal Orgad you have a point. There is a very important place for all sorts of spiritual practices and life of course being the biggest practice of all. It is important indeed to develop these qualities but I wouldn't dismiss Rupert entirely either as you actually don't need any qualities to recognise THAT here and now.. But then it's a meditation he's doing with the group! which is again a practice.. Practice probably won't give you anything you already have although it does take away a great deal of ignorance and toxicity but practice just makes a conducive place for the self knowledge to stick. Karma yoga is excellent. Dualistic bhakti is excellent. Adi shankaracharya never stopped worshipping his favorite deity Krishna. :)
