Really wanted to see edge work with the forced rotation

I'm debating do I buy the cordless mini polisher knowing it's almost 5years old now. I would think rupes should be coming out with a new one soon

I have the Nano (Long neck). I find the DA-function stalls very fast when you use some pressure trying to correct defects so I correct with the rotary function and afterwars ‘jewel’ the paint with the DA-function. I have checked and indeed there is an extra backingplate with a foam interface to use in combination with the DA 3mm for sanding. Will be using it for experimenting with sanding on a testhood in a few weeks. Should be fun!

Karel Vermeiren I’ve experimented with that - especially for headlights :) I prefer 3M Trizact 3000 foam discs used damp, either by hand or by an old DAS6 (8mm orbit). The sandpaper that comes with the Nano clogs/wears out super fast. I didn’t find it useful for anything - your mileage may vary. I agree with you that the rotary mode for the Nano is what I use for all my detail polishing (blue pad/compound). I then find the larger orbit best for the DA mode, using the yellow pad for finishing. The surprising use I’ve found for the smaller orbit DA movement is with the nylon brush for scrubbing leather seats (with leather soap!) The small orbit is far more effective with the brush - rotary just splays out the bristles. The large orbit would be too much.

Karel Vermeiren you’re most welcome... I tend to get busy for a few weeks, and then get around to thinking/commenting about the results!

Matt, While I doubt I will ever use the Rupes tools and the techniques in this video series, I find them immensely interesting. Many, many thanks to you and the team from Rupes!

As a hobbyist with 3 cars that occasionally does work on friends/family vehicles, I just can't justify $600 on a nano. It'd be so damn nice to have though. Damnit

I agree man. It's a difficult thing to pony up the cash to get.

There’s a rotary polisher called the Proxxon that you might like to look for - it doesn’t have all the attachments and possibilities of the Nano and it isn’t cordless, but it would give the same benefit for edgework at about half the price of the Nano :)

i sure like that nano, i just cant see myself shelling out $600.00 for it.

Lot of people say the same, myself included. However, on modern curvy cars and even some of the classics, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it. It is worth every single penny. Lots of people probably had the same feeling about spending the money on a 3" machine. The big thing with the nano is the ability to polish things you never would have thought to polish before. Interior items, especially piano black stuff, little intricate areas you couldn't get a 3" machine in. Add to that the nylon and horsehair cup brushes and it makes a lot of jobs that previously were tedious much easier.

If you can justify the use of it, understand how to manage the pad stall in DA mode and have not already invested in a bunch of rotary extensions/backing plates it does feel worth it. I think there will be some ways to get some form of discount or get a loan/demo of one from a detailing friend e.g through a forum. I hear getting edge work right is the difference between a good job and a really good job in many ways. Its a bit safer too I guess in avoiding burning through the paint as might be the risk with a bigger machine although DA is forgiving.

I thought the same, but I find it so useful. Because it’s cordless, it’s perfect for little touch-ups during the final finish polishing/wipe off, without having to drag out the corded machine again. I wondered if the size would be large enough for most edgework. It is, because I now use a forced-rotation Mille which itself does edgework very well (no pad stalling), so it’s only the very smallest areas where I need to reach for a second tool. Basically, where I would use a 5”/6” DA and then a 3” DA for the edgework, I can now use the 5” forced rotation and the 1” rotary (Nano), with the possibility of a 2” DA (also Nano) for door sills and other places (interior, etc) where even the 3” DA was too large. In summary then, once it’s replacing another tool as well as producing new benefits, it’s worth it!

Hi there, I'm an apprentice painter and just learning to denib/ polish my own jobs, however I want to practice on my own car to get more confident using a rotary. I know that when using a full size rotary, if you get too close to an edge on a bonnet etc, the pad can run over the edge and take the paint off, unless you tilt the pad slightly so it doesn't rotate back against the edge. If you're using the Nano, can you compound/polish right on the edge with less risk of cutting through as it has less power and torque? Or would it be better to use a DA and go right to the edge with the backing plate as shown in the video? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Yes, you will have much less chance of damage using a smaller rotating pad. The larger the diameter, the more aggressive when dealing with a rotary.

Hi, started watching your videos not that long ago, 10/10 love them and so much to learn from, regarding this video, would it not be easier to pop the bonnet? not fully open it but pop it, so there is a bigger gap between bonnet and side wing, I have been doing that myself and tend to notice it that it is a little bit easier on those bonnet edges, but that's only me :)

You are still in contact with the surface, so we will alway have friction no matter the speed.
