Coley Mule Farm

Joe follows muleman and farmer John Coley as he grooms, hitches and drives a team of four draft mules. All the while John is telling us about his farm, his mules, and breeding.
First John tells us about his and his family's farming history. He has transitioned from row crop farming to a more diversified farming and mule breeding. He has Belgian mares and breeds to his own jack and three others.
John shows us his mules as he gets three of them ready to hitch. He talks about the difference in quarter horse, draft mules and quarter mules, their dispositions, temperaments and ease of breaking and training.
He does not pasture his mules because they tend to get fat. He does feed them grass starting in February as it is abundant on the farm at that time.
Next John grooms and harnesses his team. He shows how to best set the collar to prevent injury. He uses and shows the "yankee" or "Pennsylvania Dutch" harness and discusses the benefits. He uses a "hip backer" and explains why and for which horses.
He hitches four draft mules to his forecart and the manure spreader. We see John and the team spreading manure on his field.
John talks about his breeding program and we see his beautiful mares in the fields. He believes in using a variety of jacks to breed his Belgian mares. He has agreements with Amish friends to use their jacks and they work his stock in return.

We had a pair of draft mule’s named Minnie and Mac . They were the pullingest mules around here , if someone got tractor or something stuck and couldn’t get it out they would call my gramps. He would hook them up to the truck and away we would go, slow and steady down the road. Get there and hook up to tractor buried to rear axil in mud , gramp would give a get it real loud and away they would go tractor and all. Then he would throw the reins up on their back and tuck them in , put the wipple trees in truck and tell them to get home and away they would go by themselves. If we didn’t catch up with them they would be standing in front of the barn doors waiting.. The way things are today you couldn’t do that,to many cars this was back in the 58- 67 , miss them .

My Grand Father was a Mule Skinner and taught me the ropes. We ran a Hammer Mill as well as a Sorghum Mill as well as pulled a Combine and thrasher. For some time he made Barrel Staves for different Winery's and Distillers' . Loved working the Mules over Horses. He would also Huckster hid Produce and Vegetables on the streets in St. Joseph, Mo. It was always fun going to the Mule Poles where they would drag Logs and heavy loaded sleds. He even taught me how to call, Talk and get a Stubborn Mule to move. . I lost two teeth when I was six biting a Mule on the ear. I never did that again.. I wonder how many people know the difference between a Horse Shoe, Oxen Shoe, and a Mule or Donkey Shoe or a Shetland and a burro shoe is. He also taught me how to tell different Manure piles out in the field. That is something most people never even think about. In the Old days a Farmer could tell how his animals were by the Piles of Manure. I wonder how many modern Farmers can. We could feed the Mules Carrots and Apples but never Pear's. I never did know why. Can anyone tell me?

Years ago I was lucky yo be honored to be one of the all round Wagon Train men on the great reincarnation Wagon Train across Wyoming. Thanks to Roy Roger's and Dale Evans Rogers. I was one of the very , very few that could do nearly every job on the Train. I wish I had been born back in those days. I loved my time being all the Character's I had to be. I could do Black Smith chores out on the trail, I did birthing of calves and Colts and even mules. I drove Cattle, Branded, headed and worked every position I was needed. I loved catching a nap in the saddle and sleeping under a wagon ot in the Hay Wagon. We would have hay Drops where we would reload as we went along on the trail.

We got held back behind a long wagon train coming back from a campground near honesdale . The wagon train was sponsored by a group called vision quest for troubled teens to help them find themselves in life . It was a real old time wagon train and it was long and held back a lot of traffic

I trucked tobacco from the field to the barn with mules at 8 years old . Got pawed in the ribs when I was 4 . Grew up to like the old mules just fine . Words and sounds I’ve not heard in along time . Gee .

What state are u in did u ever consider raising camels you should consider it and read up on them they are killing thousands of feral camels in Australia the largest feral population in the world they have good nutritious meat and milk
