IGN got to play some Monster Hunter Wilds and fought Nu Udra (aka The Black Flame). This is my Reaction and Breakdown of the new Monster Hunter Wilds Nu Udra gameplay from IGN First.

Nu Udra definitely stands out and will most likely became a fan-favorite. Cephalopods are very much an interesting group of animals to turn into monsters, I love my reptilians and dragons but I hope that we get more unique looking arthropods/mollusks monsters in the future.

I also like how Nu Udra can squeeze into a tiny spaces. To Ruri's question about bone structure. Octopi only have one 'hard part', they have a hawk-like beak for tearing up their food. Basically, the only restriction an octopi has is if the hole or opening is smaller than their beak.

At 27:00, regarding the color change, I don't think it's about the weather. I believe most of the oil on Nu Udra disappears, revealing its true color, and at 27:35, it covers itself with oil again.

28:20 He's wearing full Ajarakan Armour, which probably has good Fire Resist on it. A Fire-based Grapple isn't going to be high-damage. Ruri had a strong reaction to it, but it's normal to be able to tank non-Physical attacks with Elemental res.

Pins are honestly rarely THAT damaging. Outside of Furious Rajang. And there its more dangerous for the other players then the one that got pinned.^^

So I think this can make Ruri happy and sad at the same time, but I think it's like this based on my experience in the beta. It all depends on the purple star rating. For example, a 1-star Balahara does little damage and gets beaten down like a chatacabra, and a 5-star Balahara has attacks that do big damage. The big exploding spit attack almost 1-shots.

Btw rocksteady mantle is confirmed for Wilds, u can see olivia use it in one of the gameplays, dunno if ruri mentions it but im saying it preemtively just in case

We also see a brand new healing mantle on the another NPC hunter- you see the "full hp" effect on them once they stop moving on their seikret and the mantle takes effect. This seems to be the replacement for healing booster

I'm fine with mantles as long as there is an option to not show them covering your character. My biggest problem is how ugly they are, my second biggest problem is how broken they were but I would guess they'll be better balanced this time around.

It'll still cover you up but once it's over it seems like your character model, once it has a few seconds of not attacking or being hit, will just auto remove it. I've seen it a few times when the person playing doesn't have it on their item bar and aren't using the shortcuts to remove it.

2:10 Nu Udra looking smaller in-game is probably because the game's camera automatically adjusted itself to be more zoomed out when you fight extra large monster if Gravios footage from week earlier was anything to go by though

That new Nu Udra gameplay. I'm convinced at this point there's a final locale and monsters that Capcom won't pull the curtain on until after release. We already know so much about Windward Plains, Scarlet Forest and the Oilwell Basin. Maybe another two if we're going off of World?

The monster doesn't have eyes, so the barrels don't trigger combat since he can't tell where the hunter is based on their location. That's why he can still do a sneak attack after the barrel.

@SomeGuyFromUtah they didnt say it doesnt have eyes, they said it doesnt rely on them so flash bombs dont work. The sensory organs they were talking were the ones on the tentacles. It still has eyes but it doesnt use them, just like real octopuses do.

@@shimik11 could be... what I do know is that in the English IGN combat video, they threw like 3 barrels at the monster and still was able to go in and start with a sneak attack. It was all uncut.

One thing to note for ease of mind regarding the damage. You can see in one of the videos that the Nu Udra they are fighting only has three purple ticks. Demo Rey Dau had five or six I believe and demo Doshaguma the difference between 4 and 5 pips was very apparent in terms of damage dealt to the hunter as well as Monster health.

the reason the monsters in these videos dont do that much damage is probably because they gave IGN highrank equipment so they dont die that often and dont take too long to kill the monsters. There is no way you can get white sharpness in lowrank and also rey daus damage in the OBT was good in my opinion

@BRexclamationmarks I doubt they will tbh. Especially Yamatsukami since you can very clearly see on its tail, fingers and vestigial wings that it's a lizard. They've never reclassified a Elder Dragon before. Akantor wasn't one in Freedom 2 either. It was always a Flying Wyvern.

They devs aren't talking about biologically, they're talking about the fight. They're saying that Nu Udra (and its skeleton) are designed to use the tentacles to fullest in its moveset, as opposed to the other two (Yama Tsukami in particular) who don't really utilize them as well. It's not a comment on relation between the three, it's a comment on Nu Udra's development

Bro, Risebreak was the best game for them to bring back Yama Tsukami, or Shen Gaoren, any of those really large monsters just because of the freedom of movement/lateral movement. But Wilds is a close second with the sheer size of locales/zones, you could definitely put a huge monster in one of the really big zones and I hope they utilize this.

Have a theory that the Black Flame is a special Nu Udra, much larger than the typical ones you'll normally fighting, because in the Oil Basin trailer it was holding two Ajarakans one in each tentacle.

i think it would be really cool if while Nu Udra was in its den, its arm that was sticking out would occasionally "look" around with the sensory organ and if it spots you or another monster it would jab at it to keep it away, all while Nu Udra is still asleep.

17:40 the one thing about monster hunter that I've always wanted is for limb breaking and tail severing to be actually punishing for the monster. A great example of this is rathian, when you cut off the tail she can no longer poison you. Thats the kind of thing I wish they would do more with. Because alot of the time a tail chop ends up being just a small bit and it doesn't really make the fight different in any way.

Monster looks really cool, but I agree that with that much animation commitment it should take at least half or 3/4 of your HP. Guess we will see in released version, since now it's hard to compare if we don't know armor stats or resistances.

nakarkos technicly has 4 tentacles, 2 are folded back into its shell, it has flippers, its also an elder dragon it has eyes it can sense with its tentacles also.. Yama has little dragon digits/claws at the end of its "tentacles" it also lacks a beak

I dont really have a problem with grab attacks doing little damage from a gameplay perspective. This particular grab attack is pretty quick and looks difficult to avoid, so having do chip damage seems fair to me. It may also be the armor's fire resistance like you mentioned

In regards to the Gunlance and you saying "this looks like a solid chunk of metal, and I like that" We all crave the return of the car door, bulwark of azzinoth albeit in MH instead of wow LOL. We don't know what these sensory organs are nor do we know of other senses it has. We just know that it doens't use sight. I wonder if screamer pods will work on him. Yeah, this thing has like 6 tentacles that it can use to target multiple hunters with different moves individually. That seams to be their concept for the fight and they mention as much that he's very much designed for multiplayer or interactions with a player and support hunters. He kind of has a counter to you trying to outnumber him and split his agro. Yama tsukami was in MH2 so back in 2006, with kushala. I hope you can throw a bomb into that hole.

As far as damage on the flamethrower grab, consider it's also very possible the hunter is rolling in with a lot of Fire Resist. I know I would against this thing. So maybe it's less "the attack doesn't do much damage" and more "Fire Resist works pretty well?"

I still say the oilwell basin is the perfect locale for a Gogmazios return Also the geab and burn damage that gets taken could be a combo of things happening, resistance from the armor/skills, the monster being weakened possibly, and/or this possibly being a Low Rank hunt vs anything above that. I def believe that attack will absolutely damn near 1 hit-ko ppl in the release

Well, regardless if Nu-Udra is way smaller than Nakarkos, does this mean they've developed a Nakarkos-like animation skeleton? I remember back in GU, the Nakarkos skeleton was actually a really deformed Gore??? (I think, can't quote source). On the digging animation, it does flame up while doing so. I have to assume it softens the ground itself to create the cracks.

28:16 This is my only issue with the game, it feels like the hunters are too strong and barely get any damage from special attacks, we saw how that went in Rise where most battles were too easy for an average player
