I am so glad that FightinCowboy brought up the absurdity of the price discussion. This is $40 for an experience from a dev who is putting out consistent contemporary masterpieces, and $40 is breaking the budget for these people? Seriously?

@makasete309 ай бұрын
It does raise eyebrows though because it is a more expensive DLC than is normal. And so it does need to be addressed, and is not absurd. If this is the new norm going forward than it’s worth discussing the value. 40 dollars isn’t breaking the budget for most people but costs all round have risen and people are struggling. Costs vary in different regions, too. They did not need to make the DLC this expensive. The only reason is because they want a larger profit and they are betting they will not get much push back from fans. There is plenty of DLC which was fantastic and did not cost that much. That was the standardised business practice. If it’s accepted and defended then that’s the new norm and you can expect more DLC with that cost and it will rise. We’ve seen how far companies are pushing live service games and microtransactions because people defended it and called it absurd to criticize it. Let’s not go down the route of “shut up and take my money”.

I think something that is missed in the conversation about prices is how variable the cost of living is in different parts of the world or a country. For some, $40 is a lot more of their disposable income because they live somewhere where the cost of living is significantly lower, but unlike many goods which are priced regionally, video games are locked into one global price. For example, depending on where you live in the U.S., a movie ticket could be anywhere from $6 to $25, a very wide gap. Video games simply do not have the benefit of meeting a market’s cost of living to vary prices in that way.
@MarkHogan9949 ай бұрын
Actually there are also regional price differences for games. Problem is they're often more expensive in places where you'd think they should be cheaper. So it's kind of unaffordable to regularly buy new games for some people. I've heard a lot about how bad it is in South America and some parts of South East Asia. Then there are also crazy European countries where things are also insanely expensive, like 80 dollars for a Switch game. That's what it is in my country (Switzerland). A game like Breath of the Wild would cost 75 Swiss francs here, which is basically 85 US dollars. And some PlayStation games are even worse.
@mattengland6539 ай бұрын
Lmao What????? Tell us where the fuck you get movie ticket for $6?(or talking about matinee talking about marquee release since we are comparing that to AAA game title releases) AAA games have really not moved much either since the early days. I’m 38 years old and PS1, Sega, Nintendo games were typically $40-$50 back in the 90s. If you want to talk about cost of living and other goods - there has been literally non-existent inflation on the cost of games comparable to inflation of other goods - while at the same time, the cost of making those games has grow exponentially. So it’s natural that there would be an increase at some point. It has to happen as margins thin. Buy less games, find a cheaper hobby or make more money! I travel all over North America for work and movie tickets are consistent. Also, since the pandemic Apple and prime pretty much have a set price for “In theater” films comparable to 2 tickets at a theater. So a new marquee film is typically $20 or more to rent for 2 days while in theaters. Or $25 to buy - so where are you getting movie tix for $6 at a box office?

Also, Ruri mentioned 100 euros for groceries for 2 weeks for 2 people. That's dirt cheap. Here it would be 5 times that.

Using Cowboy's perspective on price I have to agree. At least to an extent. Last concert I attended with my wife set me back $1500 (went all out or it would have been about half that). That does not include: Gas and milage, Food, Drinks (so many drinks). I was in no way happy about spending more in one night than I usually budget for a year but the event, the music, and especially my company made it worth every penny to me. However... Every concert or sport event I have attended in my adult life I have memories that I still recall to myself and others. I cannot say the same about gaming. I play video games regularly but never seem to have a moment afterwards where I look at a friend or family member and say "Remember when" with the possible exception of early childhood. Games are more the "junk food" of entertainment to me at least. It's created few real memories but is fantastic at helping pass the time between. Gaming industry likely also needs to factor in that most gamers have a specific annual budget in mind for their entertainment. The higher the price the fewer titles each person will buy that year (my total gaming budget is about $300 a year for instance barring a new console). If the prices go up so do the risks as gamers who may have had the budget for their $60-$70 game may decide to pass over it for another title when the price is $150 increasing the companies risk of loss due to poor total sales. Gaming also sells globally while other entertainment is more local reducing potential profits by quantity. Posting this before my brain decides to go farther down this particular rabbit hole...

My first thought when I saw the price was “OMG, this is going to be Elden Ring 1.5!!!!”. I was so excited. Because Fromsoft undersells their games if anything. I’m pretty sure Elden Ring was sold for 60$ across the board when games were already selling for $70. So if the expansion costs 2/3 the regular game I would bet my life that this game will be 2/3 the size of the original game. Not necessarily in physical size, but in content and value. I don’t think it will be even half the physical size of the original game, but I think the area we will get will be a lot more dense and the production value will be higher. I put 170 hours into my first playthrough when the game came out. I explored as much as I could and did as much as I could. I will do the same with the DLC, and I would be surprised if I get less than 60 hours of gameplay out of it. I 100% believe that they aren’t charging us $60-70 because at that point they would have to call it Elden Ring 2. They are advertising it like it’s a full game. What expansions come with collector editions and stuff like that? I’m calling it, Elden Ring will be the first game to win game of the year twice.

@EthanRadell9 ай бұрын
idk dude, i think miyazaki is straight up lying about the size. On launch he said ER would take about 30 hours to complete for a first playthrough and most people took atleast 80. He is being way too humble. The Dark souls 1 DLC is like 3/4 the size of limgrave not including weeping pennisula, so I cant imagine doubling the price just for that. Its also going to be more dense than anywhere else in ER currently so even if the size is about the size of limgrave, the amount of content there will be atleast double which is huge. My own thoughts are is going to be about the size of the bottom half of the current map below liurnia, maybe a tad smaller, but be super dense with more main bosses than that area holds in base game. That seems what is the most likely given the price. If you look at it, elden ring is 60 dollars. 40 is 2/3 of that. So at most we are getting something on par with 2/3 of the game. Cut the size down and compact it all and the size gets smaller but everything else gets bigger. Thats just how im looking at it though, Dont let miyazaki fool you. Under sell, over deliver. Thats been their thing with elden ring for all of the marketing for base game and even then they hid so much stuff so well in the OG trailers, you had no idea when the game would end on first playthrough. I dont think the trailer even showed us an 1/8th of whats coming

We are all listening to a podcast about the world of games and the development practices which encourages discussion and different opinions. People do care about the characters and worlds in books, movies and games. It’s how companies make money. And the stronger the feedback the more companies listen and make changes. Move on with less “salt” and you’ll get more of the same crap with your favourite franchises. EA only pulled back from Microtransactions in Battlefront 2 when the social media backlash did not die down and increased. Then they made it easier to get the characters with less grinding and lowered the prices. These guys seem to be arguing for more apathy and dumb love of bad practices and story telling. It’s ok if you loved it and want to gush on every video. It’s also ok if you hated it and want to criticize it so that it doesn’t spread in future.

I’m sorry brother! I didn’t notice that you asked and I feel like an ass because I watched the video a while ago and never in a million years did I expect you to respond to my dumb ass lol I am rewatching the video because I want to reply to you respectfully! I regret that I haven’t found your videos until recently. You took my number one spot!

Also probably said some other stupid shit no doubt so apologies for that as well. Should probably take into consideration that there are professionals out there who take pride in their work and have the integrity to respond. Valuable lesson learned for an ignorant internet user with little tech savvy, now who is cringy? lol

Ok got it! The from softy joke where you replied that you get hard, it wasn’t cringy at all. It was brilliant and Cowboy should have acknowledged the joke. He just let it go over his head. Sorry man, I know my solitary view is only a drop in the bucket for you but I appreciate you all the same
