All the other great guitarists out their are pretty much either solo acts (Satriani), or the overwhelming dominant stars of the band (EVH). Much easier that way. ONLY Lifeson stands toe to toe with the greatest bassist and greatest drummer in history and STILL is in the top 5 guitarists of all time. The secret is, he plays for the sake of the song, not for the sake of the guitarist.

If you meant he hasn't received the "world's best" plaudits that Ged & Neil had, you're wildly clinging on to things that don't mean anything. Alex has easily influenced as many people as Neil and Ged have in their respective instruments. And since many people don't take as much interest in bass or drums, Alex's sound has more easily arguably been more influential in their success - which would explain why people kept wanting them to get back to their guitar lead sound. Equally arguably Neil was the weakest link because there are a few drummers who could play the same stuff. That's how ridiculous an argument this is.

I have to say I agree with you. I don't see hardly any new stuff that is worth listening to more than once or twice. There are a few acts that are worthy, but they are so hard to find in the morass of mediocrity that is out there. I've watched this video about a half dozen times now, and I've listened to 2112 a couple hundred times over the years.

I love Rush (I've seen them 5 times), but I don't think he was exactly nailing the vocals that night. There were a few out of tune spots, and some low strength (maybe miking, maybe the mix). Nothing major. I always wondered what they would have sounded like with a different vocalist. I was always intrigued with his vocals, though. I'm impressed that he was able to sound like that for as many years as he did.

Peart's passing today has led me here. Needed to pay my respects to the master lyricist and surgeon on the drums. Forever will be remembered as superb musician and resilient human being. He will be missed by many. Hail to Mr. Peart!

He led the band into the history books. Made the three of them into in my opinion the Greatest Power Trio Ever. I’m sure others will maybe dispute that but I did say it was my opinion. Saw them in Rockford twice, Madison once and Chicago three times. All totally unforgettable and each with improved skills, sound and showmanship. I was there with the woman who is still my wife. The bill was Montrose/Rush/Foghat and Foghat was who we came to see, having seen them do a tremendous show at the Wollman Rink in Central Park that summer. I remember that we hated Rush probably because of the unfamiliarity of the high pitched vocal. They had a following that took up the first few rows to the right side of the stage who were very enthusiastic. You know, people who wanted everyone to know they were the first to discover something. Turned out they were right and while young Geddy's vocals are at first,, still jarring, the musicianship is impressive. I own Rush's greatest hits, introduced my son to them as the inspiration of Coheed and Cambria and appreciate Geddy's turn with the MacKenzie Brothers and Alex appearance on Trailer Park Boys. I was watching a documentary on their farewell tour which led me here to 40 minutes of my youth. Mind blowing and unexpected. Thank you Rush and yes I did applaud that night because anyone who puts themselves out there with honest effort deserves our appreciation. I still go out and support live music, you never know what you might find even 41 years later.

Go figure, yox465 we were under the same roof at the same time as I was at this show also..I was left picking my jaw up off the ground. I quickly got in tune with Geddy's vocals, but it was the musicianship that really floored me. Having said that what a 3-band lineup though eh. Montrose (post Sammy H) and the boogie rock of Foghat who put on a great show as well. Memories...good ones!

Jeff- me also! I was like 7 years old then. And my parents got me my first stereo of my own with an 8track player. And at that time I started to form my own taste in music. And the 3 bands that I first liked was the Beatles and kiss and rush!!!!! Fly by night was the first 8track of my own that I ever had. I remember that! And I was just blown away by rush! Especially Neil!!!! This was all before I even understood music at all. But obviously I had an ear towards legendary music!

I first saw Rush at the Wilfred Laurier University auditorium when they were touring their second album and numerous times at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium. To the best of my recollection I favored their performances during the seventy's when they still played the smaller venues. Neil Peart would shake the foundations of the building and there was something magical about the raw interaction between Alex's guitar and Geddy's bass before the band became more dependent on loops and synth's. All three of them, you know what I mean. Alex Lifeson, the bangs in his hair are unfortunate, but the talent is undeniable. Geddy Lee, a lot of people can't stand his voice, when I first heard Rush, I thought it was a little strange as well, but I love it now and it can't be said that he doesn't have one of the most incredible rock voices of all time. For Neil Peart, is there a downside? I don't know but I don't know of any. Drumming, songwriting. Absolutely incredible.

I saw Rush open for Kiss, who opened for Billy Preston. Neil had only been with the band a couple of months. They were SO fucking good. Kiss was good but not like Rush. Billy was Billy....lol

So many bands, especially from that era, are "what could've been" stories. Rush is great ambitious talent, fully realized over dozens of albums, countless shows and several decades. They never courted drama or self-indulgent self-destruction. Just grounded, sober, solid, dedicated musical professionals through and through.

Welcome to the discovery of something truly great! I was 13, this was my first album (Live, "All the World's a Stage"). Wow! Saw them four times, that still wasn't enough. Check out all you can from them. Their DVD Rush in Rio from 2003 (I think) is a good one. Any of their earlier performances is magical IMO... Geddy's vocal range was higher back then. But it's all very special. I think this is recorded in Camden, NJ.

All of them are, now. I was in High School then. Working Man was extremely popular, got decent airplay. First album, with John on drums, was good. But when Neil entered the picture, Fucking Hell! They really stretched the boundary, of what could be done with rock, through the years. I was just flat dumbfounded, every time I saw them. Very amazing to watch the precision with which they work. Truly Gods of rock. Jeez, they're going to be missed... Thanks boys, for 40 years of awesome music. It'll be a very long time before they're topped....

Looking at this, which is three albums in, and then looking at R30 (Frankurt, Ger.). Man what a ride these guys gave us. There's ZZ Top, Judas Priest, and few others. But the bands that don't have internal problems and really like each other are the ones that are truly great. Yes I know someone will say Floyd, they are totally awesome, but the Gilmour/Waters issues and the exit of Waters left a hole that was never filled. This is my opinion but when these three men in Rush are on fire, there is not a band past or present that can touch them. The Power Trio at it's finest, then and now.

It is terrible what time does to all of us. They were soooooo young. Geddy has aged the best of the three. It is interesting to note that Geddy sang this way until Permanent Waves, where he credits voice lessons to Daisy. In Permanent Waves, there is a section in the song Free Will where he lets loose. After that...and to this day, he has toned it down. I still think he could crank it if he wanted to because his voice is naturally high pitched. The early material will ALWAYS be my favorite. It was raw and Geddy had that great voice.

I will be forever grateful to my older brother for turning me on to Rush as a 7 year old in 1989. All these years and I still well up with emotion and am just blown away. Plus I grew up in Baltimore but as fate would have it I married a Canadian girl and am now in the process of emigrating to Toronto. I have visited Lakeside Park as well but we got caught in a freak storm and had to seek shelter so I’m planning to visit again, maybe as an anniversary trip.
