Some deaths hurt more than others. If you're a Rush fan, and particularly a Canadian Rush fan... and particularly particularly a Toronto Rush fan... Losing Neil Peart feels like losing a part of yourself. Rest in peace, Professor. Your work will continue to teach future drummers and lyricists for generations to come.

First time I saw them live I was 14, way back in November 1974. Been the sound track of my life. Although the May 2-4 long weekend was last week this year, today is May 24th, and it's a beautiful sunny day at Lakeside Park in St. Kitts, to raise a cold one to Neil. (The Canucks will know what I mean).

Neil's smile at @25:40, after the line "glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity" being played to an establishment that ignored them for so long, in great part because they didn't compromise. They got the glittering prize, but they did it their way, and there's no question as to their integrity. And Neil knew it. R.I.P. to an exceptional human being whose words will no doubt be insightful for years to come.

I'm so happy I appreciated them from the second I heard them for the very first time, in Venezuela, 1980, the year they released Permanent Waves, till today, in Canada. I saw them live in Edmonton reinforcing that decision to listen to this very different style of Rock. While I will admit that after Signals their sound was different than their first works, it was always pleasant going back to their first 8 albums and giving myself a treat each time I needed.

Honestly, Alex's speech sums up the whole thing. They never really cared if they were inducted in the hall or not; it wasn't ever really a priority for them, they just wanted to make great music. Plus, it's completely in character for Alex and anyone who actually follows the band knows this. All of them gave speeches that fit them exactly: Neil was intellectual and charming, Geddy was short and sweet and Alex was a clow. It all fit for the band perfectly and exactly.

Jesse Well America did put them on the map. They had a tremendous run playing bars in Toronto and releasing their debut album, but they didn’t break out until Cleveland picked up Working Man and they got signed to an American record deal. It ain’t a competition between America and Canada. We all get to experience the music.

But curiosity got the better of me and I doubled back to it. Low & behold it was 2 tickets to the 2112 tour up in St. Paul!! If memory serves me right(?) I believe the opening act (Starcastle??) couldn't make the trip from Chicago, so they offered a refund over the intercom. We walked out to the ticket window, got our $7.50 "back" and walked right back into the show. I was PAID to see Rush....LOL

Truly one of the most heart warming (Neil) and funniest speeches (Alex) you`ll hear. It took me till I was in my 40s to understand this band. Their music is so deep and rich that it may take a music lover a while to truly appreciate their greatness. The beauty of Rush is that they have continued to grow as a band for over 40 years. Not many bands last this long and if they do, their creative juices dry up after 15-20 years. Not Rush... these guys just kept growing and getting better. Long live Rush!

Rush was my brother's favorite band, he idolized them,, and foolishly I always thought it was because we shared the same last name as Neil. Sadly my bro passed away a couple of years ago from a horrible disease caused by a life of hard living at 47. To honor him i took a serious interest in Rush(I was all about punk and rockabilly) and have gained a deep respect for them as musicians, hard workers, consummate professionals and creative intellectuals (how did I not know of their interest in Ayn Rand!?). I'm just.sad I didn't get to bond with my brother through Rush and he didn't get to see this moment in time, at least not on this earth.

Adam Peart to be honest, your brother is looking down and smiling ear to ear. He's always with you and jamming along with you. In other news, it's never too late to become a Rush fan. Neil (along with Bonham) was my inspiration to pick up a pair of sticks/mallets. I've been into them heavily since the Signals album (when I was 7 and old enough to slightly understand the true sorcery that is Rush). From the first notes of the first album (with the late great John Rutsey behind the kit) to their (unfortunately) last album Clockwork Angels, they have never disappointed. Sure, they went thru their synth heavy phase and I will admit, nor completely my favorite era...I still loved and respected every note transmitted thru even the crappiest set of speakers or headphones. I've passed the torch to my now 12 year old son and he ADORES them. Getting back to my point, your brother is right there with you rocking out to La Villa Strangiato and he's loving every minute of it.

I love that the two songs they played were "Tom Sawyer" and "Spirit of Radio". One is a statement of who they are, independent thinkers walking outside of the status quo in the music industry, and the other a rebuke of the music industry for the compromises musicians are forced to make at the expense of the musical soul. So perfect! Thank you Geddy, Neil and Alex for the life-long act of being good people and sharing your profound gifts of music and joyful living with us. If you're on here talking crap about Alex's speech or Geddy's voice and Neil's nose then you are not true Rush fans. if you knew Rush as a band through out the history ( been a fan since first album, note album in 1974)then you could or would understand Alex being goofy. he did not in any way disrespect me as a fan. A job well done guys and thanks for all the years of good intelligent, thoughtful rocking ass music.

The first time I saw Rush live in concert, it was 1986 and I was 20 years old. The last time I saw them in concert was in 2015, and I was privileged to see them with my 17 year old son by my side. He and I were able to bond thru the music of these inspirational musicians - and I will never be able to thank them enough for giving us something in common at a time when most young men rebel against their fathers. Geddy, Alex, and Neil (RIP) I thank you for all the joy your music has brought to me throughout my life. This was overdue and well deserved!

This just gets better and better with every viewing. Imagine having had the same Manager since the very beginning?! That says so much in itself. There is just something about Rush's pure authenticity as professional musicians, and as people, that shines through. It is this sense, compounded over all the years consistently, that is permeating in that arena. Everyone feels it. You can just feel how real they are. All about the music. What an example to anyone of any skill or trade to aspire to in the search for mastery.

I was a fan of Rush in the 80s , saw them in Philly in '84. Got a best of double cd. I say watched the R40 and clockwork Angels tours on you tube . And I recall hearing about the personal loss of his daughter and common law wife within 10 months and his self imposed exile on his 55,000 mike journey. So I read a sample excerpt from his Ghost Rider book.. This isn't just some rock and roll guy writing a memoir, this is a brilliant writer of Rush's awesome music, taking us on his journey and how he came back from what would have someone else (like Keith Emerson) end their life. The book is now on the top of my wish list. And I'm even moreinto Rush's music. The live experience has gotten more state of the art than ever. I'm not a musician, but I create visually and the ideal job for me would be part of the team that designs and produces the live design of concerts like theirs. And as Alex said on his great acceptance speech, Blah blah blah blah-- you get the idea!

My older brother turned me on to Rush in 1976. "Here" he said. "Try this and see if your like it". Took the 8 track tape of "All the Worlds a Stage" and plugged it into the player slipped on the Jensen headphones and the first track came up and I was hooked. My first thought was how could just these three musicians create all this music. From than on I was a Rush fan. That was some 38 years ago, and I still can't wait for the next album release. I sure hope that the band will be able to continue on with touring, but if not I have really enjoyed the ride. Thanks.

So some time has passed since this original post. I just want to reach out to everyone involved in this group discussion. Whether or not we agree on everything we share a common bond. Something that NOT many strangers from across the globe can say. It's the utmost respect and admiration for the best band that has ever touched our lives. If you break down Lifeson's speech, it really is quite genius. Through all the "blahs", he talks about how Rush played around the world, recording and selling millions of albums, to have the HoF say that they're not good enough for years, to which he replies "Oh? Fuck you!" Then, one day, after more years of more playing, recording, touring, the phone rings, telling him that they've finally been inducted. So he gets dressed up nice and, with everyone expecting a formal, color-by-numbers acceptance speech, forgetting that they had been cast aside for the better part of two decades, he decides to do the opposite. So finally, to the Hall, Pratt, Dirk and you, the fans, Lerxst says 'Thank you!'
