When I was a teenager (in the 80s) and all my friends were listening to Rush, I never really liked or appreciated it. Now, I appreciate their greatness and I realize how far ahead of their time they were. Great musicians and unbelievable song writers. Nothing else (at that time) sounded like this. They blazed their own trail. The complicated time signatures, the multiple-transitions, super technical playing, thought-provoking lyrics...true masters and one of the Godfathers of Progressive music.

Just so you know. The drummer, who happens to be legendary, also wrote most of the lyrics to most of their music, if not all. Dependent on the era of the bands formation. Neal created some of the most technically complex drum parts of any band on the face of the planet. As a drummer, and speaking for others of my ilk, he is the gold standard for becoming technically proficient in your playing. I have studied his methods for over thirty years and still cant play everything he did. I have a suspicion he had a hidden arm only he could see haha.

Surprised this hasn't been mentioned in the comments: for Tidepools to get the "natural" atmospheric effect, Alex and Neil pushed oars through the water of the lake near the recording studio to get the small wave effect and they recorded the song outdoors. Source: Permanent Waves tourbook essay written by Neil. This song was a replacement for their attempt at adapting the epic poem "Sir Gawain And The Green Knight" into a song. I'm glad they made this choice.

Alex said it was possibly the most difficult song to recrod in Rushes carear. Although they have said it was the funnest album to record. The splashing water at the beginning was actually just them and studio guys splashing water with their hands at the little lake near Le studio, Morin Heights Canada. Every Rush song is a virtual baptism by fire - you’re enveloped by the music and lyrics - and a Higher state of Mind is gained. I’ve been sooo blessed to have grown up with them; they’ve been a source of inspiration through good and bad, and have helped strengthen my belief in Hope & Love above all things. God bless you brother for discovering their music, and for being moved by greatness.

Disagree! Gotta dive right in! Get that full Rush experience! I would have started him off with the entire 2112 album.

Matt King If there’s was a first time listener looking for requests, I would probably start them off with the whole Moving Pictures album, and then go into, 2112, Permanent Waves, Hemispheres, A Farewell To Kings, etc. I agree, you always have to “dive right in” with Rush, because they have so many different albums that span many different genres.

Please listen and respond to 2112 , it’s 21 minutes of sensory overload experience. This tune set them apart from the rest of the performers in the 70s, and launched them great tune about individuality

Hey Jamel, I'm 57 and have listened to Rush since I was about 14, heard most of their albums and also owned most of them, seen them in concert 7 or 8 times in Kansas City Missouri. This is probably one of my favorite songs. I truly enjoyed your reactions to the song, thanks again. Also, try checking out Middletown Dreams from the Power Windows album, really good tune!

First time I ever heard a Rush song besides Tom Sawyer was when a friend said “You think that’s good? Listen to this!” and played Hemispheres for me. I sat in total shock from begining to end. I had no idea up to that point just how great these guys were! Sure Tom Sawyer was a good song too but it was just one song. Hemispheres was on a totally different level. Made my friend make a recording for me before I left that day. From that point on I couldn’t get enough! I went out and bought Farwell To Kings and 2112 the next day and listened to them for hours on end. Just amazed at what Rush was capable of! Even when their style changed and they went to more radio friendly songs they still blew me away. I have so many good memeories of seeing them live. 14 times. And every show was better than the last!

I remember purchasing this tape. A cassette tape for my new Sony Walkman and sitting with dreams of what was being described to me in the lyrics. At the Maine coast, volume all the way up just in awe. No computers yet. No cell phones. Only the colorful pictures in the tape jacket. Wonderful.

Another great flashback jam... First time I heard this... I was 5-6 yrs old. Back in 1981.. A year or so after they dropped the Permanent Waves album. I asked my parents for a 8-Track of this (at the time), ended up with a cassette later..

Your comment at 2:13 is the best comment I ever heard anyone say about this group. I’ve been listening to them for 40 years and I never heard anyone say how they mastered the ability to put you in the moment by creating sounds, special effects and how they played their instruments to create mood, atmosphere and imagery that goes with the lyrics to take you on a journey. They consistently did that for years but no one ever talked about it. Excellent critique!

I’ve never seen one of your episodes before, but I loved seeing someone experience Rush the same way I did when that album was released. I’m a 51 y.o. white male and have been a Rush fan most of my life. It gives me great enjoyment to see you enjoy this. Sometimes, sadly, I think there is more racism now than when I was a teen in the 80s. You restored some hope by your honest and objective view of a Canadian trio. If everyone could feel the way I’m feeling right now, the scourge racism would go away-fast. It reminds me of when The Rolling Stones came to Chicago in 1965 to see the great blues musicians of the time. Why can’t we all enjoy each other’s cultures and well-meant desire to move forward as members of one human race? Been fighting racism all my life and your honest reactions were beautiful because the music is beautiful. Please keep doing these!!!!
