Thanks for a great reaction. For a first listen you gathered a lot from the song. The great thing about Rush is that there is often so much you get out of re-listening to the music. I like the theme of this song, how people can forget about nature because of technology, but as Neil writes "Science, like Nature must also be tamed". I also like how Neil compares us to the creatures living in a tide pool: "All the busy little creatures chasing out their destinies Living in their pools, they soon forget about the sea" Its easy for us to miss the big picture, focusing on our own little lives & realities. Hope you enjoy listening to this one again.

Another great song from that album (actually, all the songs are really good) is Jacob's Ladder. It's almost like a classical music piece. It's understated and contemplative, yet grows bold and dramatic. It's sublime.

Just watched an interview with the band conducted while they were touring for the album that contains this song. It was part of the R30 BluRay. I was a little surprised to hear that Natural Science was the only song for which they hadn't prepared at all when going into the studio. They accordingly had a few days to write and perform it, so that it could fill up that large portion of side 2 that was saved for it.

No disrespect and Not to diminish the talent and bands of these days, but in retrospect, this specific lyrical section kind of summarizes the mainstream music and industry of current times. Perhaps a great analogy this was for the music of today. Almost as if Peart was a contemporary visionary of the future. Creativety these days is more so based on emulation and imitation , not much pioneering and innovation in music as it was back then. RUSH was a one off and incredibly unique! Dont see much of that calibre these days at all. Hence why we are revisiting history for genuine sonic stimulation👍

Natural Science (from Permanent Waves, 1980), for me isn’t just a pristine song consummately delivered with rhythmic, melodic, lyrical magnificence, this worthy contribution to Global Artistry is in fact a “MASTERPIECE” !!!!! I have my own personal regrets in life, but I will be eternally glad that I’ve enjoyed ‘real time’ on this our troubled Planet with a Band that I have truly adored, every Album, Song, Article, interview, Bootleg, Personal Celebration, Party’s before / after Concerts etc…. I’ve learned more from this Titanic Trio than I ever did at School or College (so thanks for the education Messers Dirk, Lerxst and Pratt). RIP The Drum Messiah Neil Ellwood Peart…..

Great reaction! Emotional and insightful. All your facial expressions were perfectly placed as well and probably the way I reacted when I first heard it at 17yo! If I were to play 1 song to show everything I love about Rush this is the one. Alex, Neil and Geddy all shine brilliantly on this track. The production, the playing, the composition, the multiple movements, the odd time signatures, the surprising and flawless transitions... and absolutely some of the best lyrics Neil ever wrote... as well as one my favorite Neil fills ever at 6:00. Just an incredible piece of music.

Xanadu, from Exit Stage left tour. La Villa Strangioto. Red Barchetta. Digital Man. Analog Kid. Far Cry. Headlong Flight, from Clockwork Angels tour. That should get you hooked on RUSH. They are amazing. I consider myself lucky to have seen them live in 1982, then also their last 4 tours. There is none better then these 3 guys. Incidentally that BBC2 impossibly hard quiz "Only Connect" with Coren Mitchell hosting, Rush got an oblique reference during the wall stage with numbers as song/album titles you guessed it: "2112" twenty one twelve was up there and I got it! I'm just catching up on your Rush videos, having just stumbled on your channel. I love this song; it is a reflection of Neil Peart's wide ranging intellect, and his interest in the interplay between the rational and the emotional, and with mankind's attempt to understand the world in which he finds himself. In keeping with these themes, I recommend you listen to the (admittedly lengthy) "Cygnus X-1 Book 2" from Hemispheres (1978) that discusses the internal conflict between the heart and the mind, and then listen to "Free Will" from their next album, "Permanent Waves." "Free Will" has one of Peart's best lines of poetry: "Each of us, a cell of awareness, imperfect and incomplete. Genetic blends, with uncertain ends, on a fortune hunt that's far too fleet."

Great reaction! The Live version of this song (1997/06/30 - Molson Amphitheatre, Toronto, Ontario) is truly better than the studio version, believe it or not. I actually like it better than Working Man Live in Cleveland and even Xanadu. When you get to Xanadu, it's just a prerequisite to watch the Live performance, so I have confidence you'll get to Xanadu Live. But Geddy's voice in this Live performance is exceptional and the transitions are exceptional and of course Neil and Alex are exceptional. I think the lyrics are more impactful in the Live version. I implore you to watch it.

Thought I'd just mention two things. First, if you listen to any of the 1981 live Exit Stage Left performances, it's best to use the 'Stickhits' remasters, in my opinion. Second, the only issue I have, with the live Natural Science performances, is that they always (as far as I'm aware) miss out verse two of 'Permanent Waves' and Alex's second solo.

We all seem to loose the big picture at some point. This song in the beginning starts at a 30k view, into the tidal pools, then fast forward into the future, to end back at the beginning. Meaning of Cyclical existence ? Or our own concept of civilization? Both? Neither? 😊 thoughts?

My RUSH litmus test, for lack of a better word for the newbies, resides among two songs which exist on Permanent Waves. If you befuddle your way through Jacobs Ladder, and, Natural Science, the most wonderfully menacingly brilliant arrangements, you are on the right track that will change your life forever; and that’s a good thing. Just try to not listen to what your girlfriend has to say. Which quite possibly could be the biggest hurdle you’ll ever overcome. And, to all you guys, if by some random stroke of luck found a chick who actually likes RUSH, consider yourself one of the lucky ones thus get your skinny ass to a church and marry that girl. ;-) Marty

Thank you for your thoughtful analysis and appreciation of our favorite band! One thing you said did take me aback tho -- Although, upon a few seconds of reflection, the comparison between Bon Scott and Geddy Lee makes sense, on a certain level, I would never have thought to group them together. While I appreciate what AC/DC did, now that I am older and can see more of the "playing field", as it were, I've never been a huge fan of them. I saw them love on the "For Those About to Rock" tour and I spent most of my time either laughing at Angus Young's hyperactive insanity on stage or gawking at all the human debris in the mezzanine; those poor souls who had had too much to drink or smoke or both, and who were seriously getting medical attention as a result. I was a bit of a music snob back then -- mostly Prog Rock like Rush & Genesis, Fusion Jazz like Brand X, Return to Forever, & Mahavishnu Orchestra, and then also the new music coming out of Punk and New Wave -- huge on U2, The Police, English Beat, The Ramones, Simple Minds, etc. fan -- so I didn't relate to the AC/DC scene much. The show was during December (in the Washington D.C. area) and the band brought out some guys in Reindeer and Santa Clause costumes and made fun of and abused them, on stage...you know, for laughs. Ugh. But, as I grew up, I really started to appreciate the crusher, time-stomp-perfect rhythm section in that band (I'm a drummer)! And I admired their staying power and longevity and their BRAND -- classic, BIG, hook-y, badass, Blues-based Hard Rock! They never let their fans down and they commanded the world's biggest stages, and you have to respect that! So, while I'll never be a true Bon Scott or Brian Johnson fan, I do like the way you gave Geddy and Bon respect, and you compared them so positively. Well said, Al! I'm glad you are getting into Rush! There is SO much more greatness to experience!

Enjoyed sharing that one with you. Neil sure had an incredible mind along with his percussive ability. When I first heard this I felt like the lyrics were kind of forced into the music, but after I heard it a few times and sort of understood the progression of the song it made more sense. Kind of reminds me of an old Beatles lyric actually. "There's nothing you can say that can't be sung."

If you're going to do another Rush song, then "Xanadu" is probably their most iconic song. It's long, 70% instrumental, and a bit like some symphonic piece for an orchestra. And if you're feeling crazy enough for a 25 minute "song", then "2112" is a great piece. If you can do a video, then I would, and I'd get the one with an accompanying graphic novel. If you just do the music, then I'd break tradition, and read a synopsis beforehand.

As a musician and Rush fan for roughly 40 years now I have some thoughts regarding more Rush reactions. First off, live Rush is the best Rush. For the most part, anyway. Their music sounds great from the studio, but live it always sound more full and they spent decades refining their songs on stage. They stayed true to the songs, of course, but they also managed to improve many of them. A perfect example is “La Villa Strangiato”. They had to record it in three sections because it was beyond their capability to play outright when the wrote it. Over the years they made small changes and flourishes so there are now many “versions” of it. One of my favorites is from “Rush in Rio”. It features some of Alex’s best guitar work, as well as one of his rants which is pretty funny. I would recommend you watch that next. If, however, you were curious about the development of the song I’d say start with the studio version followed by the ones from “Exit Stage Left”, “Rush in Rio”, and finally “Time Machine” 2011 in Cleveland. Have fun! I’ve subscribed in the hopes you check some of this out!

You're doing a great job on the Rush analyses! Their song lyrics are often metaphorical (not to mention metaphysical!) and can take some thought to decipher. Neil Peart wasn't called The Professor just for kicks! I appreciate the thoughtfulness you put in your Rush reactions. They're an incredibly gifted, multi-faceted trio, and their music deserves thoughtfulness. We may start listening to Rush because of the incredible, mind-blowing music, but we stay for the lyrics, the heart and soul of their music. Not all of their songs are deep, though, some of them are just plain fun, like Train to Bangkok or Twilight Zone. Fun, with a bit of strange mixed in. It is Rush, after all...😂
