Rush in Rio is one of my favorite live recordings of all time, because this is a crowd hyped beyond all sense of reason! Basically Brazil had an incredible fan base for the band... but Rush wasn’t really aware of it until this late stage of their career. So you had all these people in Brazil, fans who had abandoned all hope of ever witnessing Rush live... but when Rush did eventually find out, they deliberately added an extra two or three shows in Brazil. The documentary included on the DVD shows you the passion unleashed, men and women both just weeping openly just at the anticipation that Rush is coming... and then this, a football stadium filled to the brim with people whose dreams are finally realized. Simply epic...

Well…. He’s certainly on the Mt Rushmore of rock drumming. And it’s true to say he’s a percussionist as well. But if we compare him to other percussionists-- he’s not even on any kind of “greatest” list. If you are comparing him, as a percussionist, to other rock drummers who aren’t percussionists, then yeah, he’s gonna look pretty great. But what Neil does on keyboard percussion or tympani is just a warmup exercise for any decent college percussionist. Not to mention truly world-class professional percussionists. Neil is one of the greatest rock drummers of all time. And that’s pretty high praise. No need to inflate it.

In case you were wondering about the laundromat machines on the side of the stage, Geddy did that as a joke, since he doesn't use huge bass amps on stage and runs direct to the sound system, which would normally leave that side of the stage empty. On other tours, he had chicken rotisseries, and a guy in a chicken suit would come out occasionally during the show to tend to the chickens inside.

Hi Jamel, I’m writing to thank you for posting these excellent reactions. In particular, your love of Rush really comes through. Rush has been a favourite band for me for much of my life. I had the incredible honour of seeing them play live on their Moving Pictures tour, in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1981. I was 15 years old and it was the most incredible thing that had happed to me in my life to that point. I was a super fan! Since then my musical taste has evolved, I believe due to the influence of this amazing band. I now listen mainly to jazz, however engaging with your reaction videos has pushed me back to Rush again… dusting down my vinyl copies, not played in many years has been an absolute joy. So, thank you! Finally, you mentioned in a post that you want to hear of Rush tracks which you haven’t yet featured… I’d recommend… Farewell To Kings (Farewell To Kings album) Cygnus X1 Book 2 (Hemispheres album) These are both great songs which I very much hope you will like. Fun fact...The cover for this album "Moving Pictures" is a triple entendre; the front depicts movers who are carrying pictures. On the side, people are shown crying because the pictures passing by are emotionally "moving". Finally, the back cover has a film crew making a motion picture of the whole scene. It was photographed outside the Ontario Legislative Building at Queen's Park, Toronto. The pictures that are being moved are the band's Starman logo featured on the reverse cover of 2112 (1976), one of the Dogs Playing Poker paintings entitled A Friend in Need, and a painting that shows Joan of Arc being burned at the stake. The film crew on the back cover actually shot the scene, from which a single frame was used for the cover. This was revealed to Rush concertgoers several years later when the still image was shown on the stage projector which suddenly came to life as a film sequence.

Neil Peart is considered one of the greatest rock drummers ever.
@SpaceCattttt5 жыл бұрын
Not by me. He's good for Rush, but he can't hold a drum stick to the likes of Bruford, Collins, Bozzio, Thompson, Humphries, Wreckl, Paice and Porcaro, etc.

Except for Bozzio, none of those drummer hit half as hard as Neil.

From VERY early Rush was determined to have their concerts and albums sound the same, so fans who came to them from one wouldn't be disappointed in the other. You get the disc, you hear the concert! It's fantastic stuff.

I saw a Rush over 30 years ago...this song is still rocks today as it did then! They have aged and we have lost Neil...... but their music will endure. 2112 if you have not. All of it!

Every concert video i see from Brazil the crowds are just always so hyped. Bands must love playing for that kind of audience
@ice-iu3vv5 жыл бұрын
throughout most of the video, the crowd is doing their best to "sing" along with the most famous instrumental in rock.

I Just found out Neil Peart died moments ago, and then found this video. Rush was one of the things that made it okay for me to be a little weird when I was a kid, and it's so wonderful to see this man's utter joy at what - even among the whitest of us white folks - is considered dreadfully uncool. I'm so glad you found Rush, and I'm glad to have found this video at this moment in time. Jamel_AKA_Jamal, thank you. Neil, shine on, you crazy diamond.

You gotta love this was played over 5k miles away from home (Rio de Janeiro 2003) for an audience in which half the people weren't born yet when this song was written (1980), in a country where Portuguese is the primary language, and these fans are singing along with an INSTRUMENTAL.

I remember when my dad would come home from work we would geek out on the Rush In Rio concert together. Fond memories. We both was into music and played guitar so there was a lot of bonding there. I miss those times.

This is by far my Favorite RUSH Song. Being a musician I understand the work that went into writing a song like this that is so intrucate. Love Love Love Love Love IT!!!!!!!!!! There was a wrestler Named Hawk in the 80's, 90's into the 2000's he was 1/2 a tag team called the Road worrierswho use to say "What A Rush" and I always thought of this band when he did it...
