When the ebbing tide retreats
Along the rocky shoreline
It leaves a trail of tidal pools
In a short-lived galaxy
Each microcosmic planet
A complete society
A simple kind mirror
To reflect upon our own
All the busy little creatures
Chasing out their destinies
Living in their pools
They soon forget about the sea
Wheels within wheels
In a spiral array
A pattern so grand and complex
Time after time
We lose sight of the way
Our causes can't see their effects
A quantum leap forward
In time and space
The universe learned to expand
The mess and the magic
Triumphant and tragic
A mechanized world, out of hand
Computerized clinic
For superior cynics
Who dance to a synthetic band
In their own image
Their world is fashioned
No wonder they don't understand
Wheels within wheels
In a spiral array
A pattern so grand and complex
Time after time
We lose sight of the way
Our causes can't see their effects
Science, like nature
Must also be tamed
With a view towards its preservation
Given the same
State of integrity
It will surely serve us well
Art as expression,
Not as market campaigns
Will still capture our imaginations
Given the same
State of integrity
It will surely help us along
The most endangered species
The honest man
Will still survive annihilation
Forming a world
State of integrity
Sensitive, open and strong
Wave after wave
Will flow with the tide
And bury the world as it does
Tide after tide
Will flow and recede
Leaving life to go on
As it was

Rubin! Rush fans do not mind endless ramblings about their favorite band - so no worries! Now what the heck is the best way to get a suggestion to you? I even tried messaging you on Facebook to no avail. I ain't mad though! 🙂 I can see having Queen and Rush as someone's two favorite bands. They can coexist at the top because they are so different. So yeah, put Rush at the top along with Queen! 👍🎶

Up until Grace under... album. Then they had gotten too keyboard- electric drum ,for my taste. So I checked out. But 1974-86 or so...what an era for them..IN MY OPINION.

Also, check out their last album 'Clockwork Angels'. Some really good stuff on there like The Anarchist, BU2B, The Wreckers, Headlong Flight and The Garden.

Thanks for the shout out. Rush has stated that they would never ever tour as Rush without Neil Peart. They are officially retired as a band from touring. Alex & Geddy may at some point play together on a project or with other musicians. At some point you need to do By-Tor & the Snow Dog from the studio LP. It's so much longer & better then the shorter live version that you did already. If I were to suggest anything to you, it would have to be the studio version of Cygnus X-1. It's about a black hole in space before any movies were made about Black Holes! As you know Neil Peart wrote about 98% of all of Rush's lyrics. Back when my buddies & I first bought A Farewell to Kings & were playing the LP, we noticed that Cygnus X-! is the last song on the LP along with it saying Part 1. Of course we couldn't wait to get their next LP which was Hemisphere's. Side A is Part 2 of Cygnus. It's a true masterpiece. As always, I so enjoy all of your reviews. Rock on!!!

Very much a turning point album for Rush and I clearly remember buying this album way back in 1980 when I was but a young teenager. Their previous release was the mighty Hemispheres from 1978, so Permanent Waves was a huge evolution in their sound and composing. Really accessible music that put them onto the mainstream radar. What followed was the albums Moving Pictures and Signals, which were commercially huge for the band. Much as I like the 'classic' earlier Rush albums, it was the music from Permanent Waves onwards that really cemented them as one of the best rock bands I had ever listened to up to that point.

Yep, this was the album where Rush fully found its own identity and had shed its 70s era penchant for sci-fi, fantasy and Ayn Rand. Not that I disliked those elements in their music, but that time had come and passed. Rush needed to move on, and they did with this album.

I am a huge Queen fan too Ruben, Got my first album as a young boy,I think I was 10. It was Sheer Heart Attack, still one of my favorite Queen Album. Within a year News of the World Came out and changed my world. My first live Queen show was in 79, then in 81 (I think it was 81) they did the live Killers tour with the huge bank of colored lights in front of Roger's drum riser. One of the greatest shows I have ever seen to date and I've been to well over 100 in my lifetime. I came to Rush late for whatever reason. (The song Tree's got me to finally dig deeper)anyway I am not surprised you like Rush as a huge Queen fan.If you think of it, Queen was very Prog too although they were never put in that category. I think of Queen as a Hard Rock band with Prog elements. Thanks for your reviews Ruben Carey from Canada!

Hey Ruben, It is so cool that you are making old and young fans re-experiencing their first times listening to their (now) favorite songs and bands. Your comments to Rush are a great example of this, and it is not more that rightiously so that you are giving them a lot of attention. You serve a big old fanbase by commenting to them and you help young folks understanding their fathers taste. The thing is, Rush is big. They're huge. They have been receiving credits for decades. They are rich, moneywise and by their experiences descovering the world through their tours and fanmail. It would be cool if you, for example, would try Be'lakor once more. Those Aussies are young, very young, but they've already made 4 albums which are INSANE! They barely tour, they focus on their jobs and familylifes.... which is great, maybe even refreshing, and not more than understandable... but their music deserves to be spread around the world. Our fathers deserve to get to know their music by their sons. You could be educating a big public about Be'lakor, about their passion composing fantastic metal without fighting for attention or by selling out. I could name you a lot of their songs which might be better than the one song you did. But the thing is, while their individual songs are fantastic their albums are just perfect craftmanship. Any way, give a spin to Fraught (there is a great live version, but the album version has a smoother start). Try Neither shape or shadow, try Remnants, try from scythe to sceptre, try the suns delusion, try In Parting, try The Desolation of Ares. All of them songs of their first 3 albums (while you already did one of their newest record). Enjoy!

Ruben, it is such a pleasure seeing someone who clearly appreciates great music discover Rush in real time. I am likely an outlier in the band's fandom, but the Permanent Waves to Power Windows era of their discography is my favorite. For me, this is when their musicianship and lyricism melded best with their newfound commitment to concise songwriting. Two deep tracks that I would love to see you react to are The Analog Kid off Signals and/or Middleton Dreams off of Windows. Alex often gets overshadowed by his titanic band-mates, and he really really gets to shine in these two.

possibly one of their most if not the most technical song musicianship wise and most progressive and cutting edge songs. And that I think was done more honestly without a lot of studio over dubbing. Excellent song. I'd like to suggest some later era Rush songs: Distant Early Warning Time Stand Still Dreamline Test For Echo Animate BU2B The Wreckers Most of these songs won't get suggested as gateway songs, and they're not necessarily the most progressive songs by them, but they're absolutely incredible. Just as flawless as the one's you're getting suggestions for, still. The last two are on Rush's most recent album. They are as good as anything they did in the past, easily. This band never had a shitty period.

Don't know about not having a "shitty period" - Test for Echo, was the first Rush album I couldn't listen to repeatedly, start-to-finish, I always had to skip songs that just... didn't... do... it (*ahem* Dog Years....) But a shitty period for Rush would sound like any other band's normal catalog! I'd love to hear Rubin cover songs from Grace Under Pressure ---> Roll The Bones. That's 5 entire albums worth of music that KZbinr subscribers NEVER seem to recommend :( Arguably, you might even say that later Rush (Counterparts, on) has more in common with early Rush than anything; more raw, guitar driven sound with almost no synth or extra effects to be heard. I tended to like the added texture those effects provided though and had about a dozen foot pedals and switches setup on my board to replicate Lifeson as closely as possible.

At 14:00... i cant hear one word... but if your question is, Is it true they wanted to "replace" (cant hear the word) the drummer, the answer would be partial yes and no. But on the same note, no one could ever know, because they keep things so tightly wrapped. But it seemed to me, over the last years, Neil has slipped farther away from wanting to be Rush. Ive heard something about Marco Minneman.. but that has nothing to do with Rush, other than Alex Lifeson. But there were always rumors of Rush since day one of their careers, so its anyones guess.

I think Cygnus X-1 book 2 from the album Hemispheres might be a good next step with Rush or Trees from the same album. Trees is short but sweet! Subdivisions from the Signals album needs to be done too at some point. It's a great song & album but it marks their beginning into more Synth based music.

What the real story is that had their final tour because the drummer,Peart, can no longer tour because of all the yrs of wear and tear. His body can't take it anymore. They WILL NEVER tour without him, but the other 2 band members are hopeful that someday he might feel well enough to do some live shows. Period.

Your right their is no leader ,Geddy,Alex and Neil are great friends and the band makes decisions democratically and based on professional respect. There is one leader of three!

Geddy and Alex are lifelong best friends. I would bet on them making more music together, but it won't be called "Rush". I would be equally surprised if Neil came out of retirement.

Have you done the song Farewell to Kings yet? If not, I’d recommend it. My favorite song off that album after Xanadu.
