@rushmixtape5 My parents live 3000 miles from here... I'm 47 yr old with my own house and my wife is also a musician, but I do not play when she is here because I am very, very, very loud.... I used to have my entire Rush tribute band practicing in my house. Now, that was LOUD. People might think I play all the time. In fact, I rarely play at all, sometimes like 1 hr a week if I'm lucky....

8 years ago I was paralyzed from mid chest down in a motocross accident which ended many thing for me, and drumming was one of them. From being the lead snare with a local drum corp to playing my full set to tracks just as you are. I want to say thank you for the wonderful drumming and for giving me the motivation to pull out my snare and put down some flams and rolls again. Keep the sticks beating and God Bless!!

This is a small piccollo snare, tuned very high; I'm hitting the head close to the rim to get a good attack. What Neil is playing on the original recording is one of his Tama wood timbales, next to his hi-hat. I used to have timbales there as well but now it's a floor tom and my Roland SPD-20.

@Ritchie14 I agree, there are many songs from Test for Echo that I would like to do (I have done a few). I love playing with traditional grip. Unfortunately, my experience is that all the videos from songs of this album are completely blocked by KZbin copyrights. So, I hesitate before spending hours learning and practicing a song and get a closed door at the end.... We'll see....

Thank you! Yes, many Rush songs are physically very demanding (this one is in fact not too bad). When I really got tired though is when, for many of these videos, I had to do many consecutive takes until I was happy enough with the performance (I remember Tom Sawyer was take #14! Ouf!). So, these sessions usually were indeed often tiring. Neil was a real athlete.

I'm actually buying electronic drums for my apartment, trading in my Pacific kit towards them. KAT KT3s with two crashes dual zone and ride dual zone as well. Using my tax refund to purchase them. My brother's drummer Charlie Korch who is a professional playing gigs all around the Atlanta area is a good friend to me as well told me to stay clear of many brands and said since I play a lot of Rush, prog in general these wound be perfect as the have two rack pads and two floor pads dual zoned as well as 45 kits, 500 or so percussion samples ect all for about $900 (trade should be about $250 as the Pacifics are 12 years old without cymbals). plus with my trade in at Guitar Center should be no problem. I haven't played regularly in 3 years and I miss it. Thanks for sharing this gem and you are truly an inspiration to my drumming too bro.

@rbeun I have been using them for a year now with no issues at all. I'm still using the original covers. I have not broken any and if you are careful with the sleeves, there will never be metal-metal contact. The only thing I do not like much is the cheapo plastic for the tips. The nylon tips of the Pro-marks are much harder and sound better on the ride. Cross-sticking is also not that great. The Pro-marks of course are still #1 but for practicing, I really like the Ahead.

@datinsky69 It's obviously not among the toughest ones (e.g. LVS, Cygnus X-1, AFTK, etc.) but it has its moments. The reggae parts are unusual with bass drum between hi-hat hits, the fills are fast and metronomic, the triplets on the bass drum while playing 4th on the bell of the ride are not so easy for me to get right, and the little hi-hat with the foot on the upbeats in the floor tom riding section... are all things that needed practice for sure.... ;)

Do you through learn through repetitive playing or do you make notes? (forgive the pun)
@Astrotama8 жыл бұрын
From memory although I can write/read music notes as well. The way I learn songs: I listen to them A LOT, just visualizing the playing. Then I sit behind the drums, and practice. Then I play the entire song on the drums without any background music, just playing it in my head. When I play it from start to finish like that without any big hiccups, I do the video... ;)

Ok. Thanks for that - will try the visualization - Will try and imagine I've a few more toms and cymbals too!. Cheers :-).
