Wal basses have such a character that no other bass has. Playing this song with any other bass would not sound the same. I loved this cover
@66TJP2 жыл бұрын
I used to own a Steinberger XL2, just like Geddy's, and just like all the rest of them too. They all sound alike. That bass, of course, sounded dead on with all of the Grace Under Pressure stuff and it was fun playing all of the Power Windows stuff on that bass as well, just as Geddy did on that tour before he received his Wal. I also like how the Wal fits in on this track and think it sounds better than the Steinberger does on it, if that's possible...
@connerstines15782 жыл бұрын
It's a little bit the string gauge as well. Geddy used very light strings on the Wal, so it had a bit more spank and brightness with that in mind.

Thanks Mark... For this one I used a slight bit of a very quick delay that Geddy uses on this track. It's like a real quick slapback echo that I have on my little Yamaha mixer that I use. @66TJP Thanks for the quick reply. I actually meant the Palmer DI, sorry. The SANS came later- after Geddy started to play like Claypool, ugh. LOL. There are some super nice BGW's on Reverb right now for good prices. One thing I can assure you is that the Mk2's just don't sound like the Mk1's do, and that's why I think Ged dropped Wal cold and went back to the jazz after he tried the Mk2. They just aren't the same as the Mk1. The larger body and top horn ruined this exact tone. So the Mk1 Wal is the only bass that can make this exact sound.

I gotta learn how to pick the bass, getting clear notes with those big stretches, and all that good stuff. I’m curious how much practice it took to get to this point! Also I’d love to eventually get a set of Taurus pedals, they sound so rich and I can probably noodle around with them in the background and build some 80’s-esque tunes, but man are they expensive..

@Sheehy2232 жыл бұрын
@@66TJP Common misconception but nope, it's 100% a Ric, he just has more bridge pickup dialed in than usual to try to make it sound different. during the instrumental part it gets a lot more obvious. I actually also thought it was a Steinberger for a long time but Geddy says he used a Ric on parts of Grace Under Pressure in his book and to my ear this sounds like the only song unless it's buried under synth somewhere else in the album. The more isolated tracks I've listened to, the more it seems like Geddy uses more basses in the studio than one would initially assume.

What bass do you feel more easy and comfortable to play fast? Wal,rickenbaker or the jazz 70's?
@66TJP2 жыл бұрын
I'd have to say the Fender Jazz Bass. Having that narrow neck, plus my Geddy Lee Jazz Bass' neck is nice and flat on the backside as well, so, it feels small in my hands and I'm able to move around a bit easier. The Wal has more of a "V" shaped neck and takes a little getting used to, The Rickenbackers are no problem either. I guess to play "fast" really comes down to constant practice on what it is that you consider to be "fast". You'll find that after some time the movements and fingerings you thought were "fast" are so much easier to perform after playing through them many times. Sure, the neck has some effect on playability but once you learn a certain part, I'd bet that you could play it pretty well on any bass.
@patrickkillilea81592 жыл бұрын
Very nice playing Tom. I was just wondering at what age you started playing bass? I myself just turned 20 was gifted a bass for my birthday. I was scrolling thru the comments trying to see what the signal was to record your part so was hoping for a little grace if I’m asking you to repeat yourself: was this thru your GKs or direct? I had a RB400 years ago in the early 90s and sold it a few years after. Bought another used one last year just to see if I’d made a mistake and now it’s the same result, sounds like cardboard, not my sound. But maybe I need to give her another try? I also rebought an old GK MB200 and she’s in the hallway next to the RB400 ready to be sold at the local music store. After hearing your Wal (my Mach 1 is a midnight blue 1987) I don’t want to cast these pieces out if I can salvage a good tone! Thanks for any info!
@66TJP Жыл бұрын
The signal is direct out (post EQ) of the GK 700RBII and into a small Yamaha mixer. That also has a basic bass/ mid/ treble EQ. I usually roll off almost all of the bass on the amp and the mixer EQ and I do add some slight compression that is also built into the mixer. I adjust the mids to my liking and the highs are pretty much rolled off... around 8-9 O' Clock on the dial... I used a RB400 at a gig once, It was backline and I just plugged into it. I adjusted it as good as I could but I do remember it having a ton of growl compared to my 700RBII. But it was going through a GK 410 cab and I was pushing it hard playing War Pigs using my Burgandyglo 4001 and that Ric has some growl of it's own....
