Neil Peart was using electronic and computer-terminology to describe human emotions, feelings, ways of communicating and living. He is using a lot of nice metaphors to describe what humans do and how we can rise (elevate) or change (deviate) out approach/response to conditions in our lives. Cool stuff! Also, Geddy's bassline is very Prog/Fusion Rock. It's complicated but tuneful and tight. Awesome!

This is another in a long line of songs exhorting the listener to live authentically and be a spirited individual as opposed to just another happy herd member. So yeah, I think you got it. Good job. The band championed this song with its fan base even though it didn't rate nearly as high as the other tracks on Moving Pictures. It's a remarkable song-- definitely one of my personal favorites.

Love how you so quickly and easily pick up those bass lines. This is Rush tribute to The Police, who were an influence, as well as Neil's love for Reggae and Ska. As we have come to expect the drumming on this track is amazing and so pleasing. its easy to forget Alex in this song because the base and drums are so interesting, but the guitar work is perfect for the song.

Neil's lyrics are often up for interpretation. They make you think and question the message or position. Smart lyrics. Often they are just images, other times perception or analytic. That's the greatness of his lyrics ! Everybody gets their own interpretation and relate to them in different ways. That's what's great about them.

The song is about individuality and how understanding the heterodox experiences of each of us reveals a deeper understanding of how we can relate to one another. Keep in mind that Neil was writing this song at the dawn of the digital age (at least in so far as popular culture was concerned). He used it as a metaphor to explain his feelings about individualism and society in this song.
@SnowDogisVictorious17 күн бұрын
PS - Your pound of Polish beef story is 1000% dead-on, not only in relation to the lyrics but also in relation to Neil Peart as a human (as reflected in his own, autobiographical travelogues and interviews. Bravo!!!

Geddy's parents owned a small convenience store, and Neil, who wrote the lyrics, worked at his dad's hardware store up to the day he auditioned for Rush. I'm sure you realize that even trying to label that Bass line as grunge, that it was written in 1981. Rush has influenced about everybody that's picked up an instrument in one way, shape, or another.... those who have listened to them anyhow.... and if they haven't, they should. They are the real deal from top to bottom and inside and out. All three of them. When you get this hooked into Geddy or Neil, you kind of forget Alex. Now I don't, because I focus on all three of them. I sure hope you go back and listen to this music over and over as you will always pick up more as you listen repeatedly. You'll also understand how intricate of a part that Alex plays in this music as well. Every single one of them.... the way they approached a song to me is just phenomenal. I think the Benchmark is not just the musicianship, but their composition. It's just mind-blowing. Everything they do. There's rarely a clunker. At least in my book. And I'll tell you right now, available light may not have been my favorite back when it came out cuz I was much younger and was into much harder rock, but I look at that song today and it's a masterpiece. Probably one of, if not Geddy's best vocals. BTW.... Love the story at the deli!

If you've heard early Police, you'll definitely hear their influence on Rush in this one. That's the reggae you're hearing, The legendary drummer for the Police, Stewart Copeland, and Neil Peart became good friends in the early '80's and remained so until Peart's death in 2020. If you liked Neil's drum work here (and we know you did), you need to listen to Copeland's work with the police too. Try "Roxanne," "Can't Stand Losing You," and "Every Breath You Take".

When I was in school, I was taught by this marvelous teacher about always trying to look at both sides of a story. Don't just follow along with any single narrative presented, rather use your brain to see if there's truth to an argument, or if it's all flash with no substance. We all had to pick a subject we favoured for a debate, but the twist was we had to then honestly do our best to argue *against* it, using logic and ratiocination in order to draw out any flaws, agendas, misconceptions, etc., that we glossed over in order to "win" just for the sake of winning. We had to reverse our thoughts in order to really see both sides in any particular subject of debate worthy of consideration.

That story you told about Deli Man is a perfect example of reverse polarity! This song steps WAY outside the boundaries of a Rush composition up to this point in their career. I think this song is their reverse polarity in terms of structure and feel. They were BIG fans of The Police. Stewart Copeland, the drummer of The Police was enamored with Neil, and they both shared a friendship for many years. Also, Stewart Copeland is no slouch of a drummer either! If you haven't checked them out, I highly suggest it. Sting is one monster bassist and vocalist... RIP Professor.

The drums were recorded with a Peavey PZM flat mike attached to Neil's chest as close as possible to his ears. Neil did not like the drum sound as projected outward from the resonant head nor projected very close to the top of the battering head when listening to some of the original outtakes he recorded for that one song to the rest of the music. To him, the drum sound came across better hearing it from behind the drums some small distance away playing and sitting on his drummers throne. Therefore, the engineer found the mike and recorded the drums, snare, and cymbals to simulate as close as possible how Neil was actually hearing the sound from the drum throne. The snare sound gives it away.
