This was Rush in their Zep phase, off their first album it became a staple on every tour. Like others have said Live in Cleveland from The Time Machine tour when they were all approaching 60 will blow your mind.

John Rutsey (RIP)on drums, not Neil Peart.(RIP)..Love that brontosaurus riff.

This is the original with John Rutsy on the drums. He was only on the first album. He left the band due to health issues and musical direction. Neil Peart not Neil Pearl not long after (they had to find a drummer in two weeks) joined the band. That is Geddy Lee on vocals, a guy not a girl. As others have mentioned please check out Working Man live in Cleveland. The guys are pushing 60 and they show all the young ones, how it is done! Cheers

I would listen to Virgin Classic Rock, and I noticed there was no Rush being played. Lunchtime was for requests, and I would send them this to play from my computer class. After a week, they were starting to play it daily. It must have triggered other listeners because after that week, other Rush tunes were getting played and more frequently.

Rush was the Canadian Led Zeppelin in the 70’s….but better, with Alex Lifeson outdoing Jimi Page on guitar!! A lot of great guitarists look to the first Rush album for inspiration!

Eddie Van Halen was once asked, in an interview, what it was like to be the greatest guitarist. Eddie's reply- You'd have to ask Alex Lifeson !!

I give credit to this song for keeping me half sane for the god-awful 3 1/2 years in Hawaii. NOT an 808 fan.🤬 A band that played at a nearby bar/nightclub would play this and nail it. Giving me a reason to live. When they saw me roll in, they knew they were going to be "Working Men".

Geddy Lee (vocals & bass) was not very happy w/ his lyrics on the first Rush album in 1974... it sounded very generic but the song 'Working man' resonated w/ radio listeners in Cleveland, Ohio at the time in the industrial Midwest... Alex Lifeson (guitar) was definitely a promising young musician and showed his affinity for Led Zeppelin and Cream on this record for sure... John Rutsey (drums) was the original member of Rush... He did not get any writing credits on the first Rush album. Geddy and Alex admitted that creatively, Rutsey was not where the 2 of them were in terms on influences... As Rush got signed in America and were slated on their first US tour, John Rutsey was reportedly not enthusiastic about going on the road for months. Rush's managers also noticed that Rutsey (who was diabetic) was not healthy and not particularly responsible in terms of drinking and partying after shows... They told Geddy and Alex that they could not put Rutsey on tour - they feared that he might not make it back alive. Regrettably, they agreed and opted to fire John Rutsey just weeks before they were due to go on tour and desperately needed a drummer. Rush's managers started scoping out potential local drummers to audition for Rush in a touring capacity... One of the potential candidates was Neil Peart, a Toronto-based drummer who played in a local band called J.R. Flood at the time and was a pro by that point... He worked at his dad's farm parts store and played gigs on the weekends. Neil Peart was one of a handful of drummers asked to audition for Rush... He had never heard of the band or their 1st record but went to audition. Geddy and Alex recalled a tall, awkward fellow coming in to audition and thought he was 'goofy'... But then, he set up his kit and "pounded the crap out of his drums"... Peart was in; he said he liked the guys immediately and liked their music. With Rush spending weeks on tour in 1974, Geddy and Alex got to know Neil Peart as an individual... He was shy, awkward and exceptionally well-read... very opinionated... and verbally creative... They noticed that Peart spent all his free time reading books. They thought, "Maybe he can write lyrics for us..." which would give Geddy and Alex more time to work on the music and melodies. Peart accepted the challenge and would sit and listen to the music and began writing lyrics... That was why there was a significant improvement lyrically from the first Rush album to the 2nd album 'Fly by night' in 1975... Peart contributed a bulk of lyrics for songs like 'Anthem' ... 'Fly by night' ... 'By-Tor and the Snow Dog' ... 'Rivendell'... if u compare it to the songs on the debut album like - 'In the mood'... 'Need some love' ... "What you're doing"...

In 74 when I first heard this on an old AM radio station in Safford, Arizona. I was hooked. Seen this band more times than I can remember, and as always, pure genius. Working Man live in Cleveland is a completely different animal than the studio version. Hope you give it a try.... It's really good.😊
