We had a 5th camera to the left of the kit in place but we couldn't use it because the feed kept cutting out. Joe Slaby ( drum tech ) and Danny.were both gracious, kind, helpful and wonderful for agreeing and allowing us access to pull this all off. I'm sure you can guess which company I work at by what I have said. If you can't, we provide his sticks.

@@olly8453 it was specifically agreed to and contracted for "pneuma' only. We specifically asked for that song and during talks he said he'd try and add a little more than he would usually for us. We have a good relationship with him. We kept ribbing him though because if you didn't know Vic Firth is part of the Zildjian Co and he uses Paiste which we refer to as garbage can lids.

And genuinely one of the nicest human beings out there. Man is in his 60s and still pulling off these musical journeys night after night. There's a great interview with him in his home studio, which is their creative space to this day. He's also got deep roots in jazz and other genres that influence many of the swing beats you hear in tracks like Pneuma.

A lot of people think he is one of the best drummers of all time, he picked up jazz fusion drumming for fun (which I think says a lot). Him using his arms and legs non stop, switching in and out of time signatures, and the speed which he can go at can be mind blowing. He is definitely one of the most technical and precise musicians out there. This was just one song too, he does this for hours at a time, my forearm would be cramping after the intro.

Here’s the crazy part. It’s not even a SOLO. This is just a “regular” TOOL song that they play every night they’re on tour. This, also, isn’t even a difficult song to play for him. When asked, he has never once said “Pneuma” was even in the top 10 hardest to play. He’s on cruise control for this song. A nice “cool-down” after THE GRUDGE. 😂 Imagine playing this not just ONCE, but EVERY TIME the song is up…… Danny Carey is the GOAT.

I would suggest them if someone only had one show to choose for any given year, despite the lofty ticket prices. Their soundstage is revolutionary and many other acts have copied it, as it’s optimized for great sound wherever you’re seated.

The double amazing part beyond the complexity of the patterns and all the different sounds is that on top of all that, every strike is at an intentional and exact velocity, like the middle rimshot/steel section "breathes" in waves of intensities, as does the cascading tonal triplets section. He doesn't just get excited and bang it out once the heavy bits come through. A bit more of a jazz drummer that happens to play rock/metal/progressive. Many of the drums are Mandala pads and play samples (live modified by 128 levels of pressure sensing, so they still get the "feels" and not just sound like a drum machine) from the big stack next to him that he loaded up the presets at the setup. That allows him to have more drum types (and some non-drum percussion like xylophone/marimba) without 20 trucks full of equipment or long resets between songs, and in some songs he's also filling what a keyboardist might do, with sticks. He built most of his soundbanks by playing the actual instrument and sampling it, like a sonic soul collector.

First time I watched tool was in 2000 abd had 'bad' seat in the venue. But it did mean I got yo watch Danny Carey from directly side-on. I watched all his limbs in perfe t view, it was incredible to watch.

He does, I’ve seen him with various other team jerseys and he pretty much sports the colors of the home team wherever they’re at.

Danny wears the jersey of whatever city their playing in at the time. He's a huge basketball fan.

But did you notice his shirt number? A reference to the drum time signature. Even Mike Portnoy didnt see it.

Fun reaction, gentlemen! Did you notice how in certain parts he sits up very straight with his head and neck tilted back a bit? I think any drummer can relate to that stance. He is most literally elevating his entire mind to this ethereal space where he can navigate all of these parts at once. It takes A LOT of brain power, besides the obvious physical feat. Remember Danny Carey is like 51 years old in this video. GOAT!!
