Neil Peart is in an elevated class known unofficially as "percussionist". He's not just a drummer. That's why he has no issue with tubular bells, glockenspiel, or straight up xylophone baby... oh - he writes all the lyrics too ;)
@chrisdarkly4 жыл бұрын
If you listen to Alex Lifeson's guitar playing on this song you'll realize that he is using scales common in Middle eastern music rather than traditional western scales during some of the piece. Which gives it some of that exotic vibe. Stuff like that flies under the radar because he doesn't shred like a speed metal guy. But incorporating non western techniques into your guitar playing and doing it seamlessly takes a lot of talent.

Neal Peart drum solos have evolved. I highly recommend watching a newer one with overhead video to see what he actually does. You might want to check out "RUSH in Río - Leave That Thing Alone and YYZ" on KZbin. Leave That Thing Alone is a great instrumental, and it doesn't have YYZ is actually O Baterista (person who uploaded the video made a mistake), the drum solo Peart does evolved to its final form.

Hey SC, have been enjoying your channel for the last couple of weeks. That instrument to the left of Neil is called a "malletKAT" (he always tended to refer to it as his "midi marimba"). Between 1984-85 he expanded his exploration of electronic percussion with this instrument, creating a couple of songs/extended demos - in particular one called "Pieces of Eight". In those days, he was sampling individual drum and percussion sounds using instruments from all over the world and building himself a very impressive library. 30 years later, you can pretty much buy this stuff off-the-shelf (for a price). Worst kept secret ever: Rush fans - like myself - are huge nerds. Anyway... by the time of this tour (Hold Your Fire, 1987), he had incorporated bits of his malletKAT experimentation into his drum solo. For what it's worth - this is not the best official video of YYZ, nor is it his best drum solo (imho). For YYZ, hands down it has to be Rush In Rio (you'll see why right away). Also, the drum solo in the video version of the HYF tour (for some inexplicable reason) gets cut. Bummer. Solo-wise, some of his earlier stuff is impressive simply from a speed and stamina standpoint, but he was only a dozen or so years into his career with another 30 to go. You might find some of his later stuff even more musical and impressive. Keep on doing what you're doing and Merry Christmas from a life-long Rush fan and recent SC fan! OK, back to the egg nog...

Neil is also an astounding songwriter and poet. He wrote the vast majority of Rush's lyrics. Listening to a Rush song is like watching a Swiss watch move- on the first glance, it's interesting and beautiful. However, if you know how to make a watch, you get an idea of how well the parts work together to make the watch keep perfect time.

Close to 200 baseballs, all autographed by former Negro Leagues baseball players or backers, have been donated to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum by a somewhat surprising fan ... Rush singer/bassist Geddy Lee ... ... Lee, whose band performs Saturday at Starlight (see Page 39), dropped by the museum last year unannounced, Kendrick said. I wasnt here, but another employee walked him through the museum, and apparently he fell in love with the place, Kendrick said. He already had a huge respect for the Negro Leagues, as the collection shows, and this brought it home to him.
