The Morse is in the drums at the beginning. Alex was flying (he's a pilot) the band back to Pearson (YYZ) and they heard the code on the NAV(?) radio. That set the juices flowing. I don't know if you'd call it zoning code. Its from the time when flights were transmitted through teletypes (think oldschool typewriter). Transmission time was pretty slow, think 2-3 letters per second. Easier/faster to send "YYZ-YYC" than it is to say "Lester B Pearson Airport to Calgary International". Each country does theirs slightly different. America LAX is Los Angeles, DFW is Dallas-Fort Worth, LGA is La Guardia, JFK is one of the airports servicing New York, MSP is Minneapolis-Saint Paul. Europe: HEA is London-Heathrow, GAT is London-Gatwick, AMS is Amsterdam Canada starts all airport names with the letter 'Y', YYZ is Toronto, YVR is Vancouver, YYC is Calgary.

You are looking at “THE” progressive rock band!! YYZ was one of their few instrumentals. Geddy Lee (bass & vocals & keys), Neil Peart (drums) & Alex Lifeson (guitar & keys). 3 pc band & all were masters at their instruments!! Neil incidentally did most of the song writing (lyrics). Cancer took Neil but not before he showed everyone how drums can/could be played! Every drummer in existence tips their hat to Neil & sometimes even bows down front! 😉🥁

Geddy Lee, the bass and keyboard player is the vocalist as well. On most all of their songs, he sings way up high. Neil, the drummer, wrote most all of the lyrics in their songs. Eric, Guitar, and Geddy did most of the musical composition. They play the shit out of their instruments, so much sound out of a three piece. They really stood out. Much of their earlier music is very complex prog rock theme albums. Their 80's stuff is probably the stuff you'd dig the most. A couple of suggestions. Sub Divisions and The Spirit of Radio. Especially Spirit of Radio. Nice Regge break in the middle.

WOW! you actually pronounced Neil's last name correctly the first time. I've never met or have heard a single person. Not even the biggest fans ever pronounce his name right. It's pronounced like (peert). I am drummer , a Huge fan and was a camera crew member for the band. Neil was a extremely private person and we were strictly not allowed to talk to them. But I'm not 1 to follow rules. He was walking out of the main arena area . Side note: I've worked with 100s of the biggest rock bands ever. And have no problem talking to them. But with Neil Peart, I was like a school girl. I said Mr. Peart (Peert). I'm such a huge fan. I've always wanted 1 of your drum sticks. He Said since you pronounced my name right, here's 2. Still have them to this day. GOOD JOB 👍

Hey, guys. Just wanted to let you know that YYZ is one of their few instrumental songs. YYZ is actually the airport code for Toronto, their home town. So many good songs from this band, hard to choose, but I'm sure you would enjoy The Spirit of Radio, Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Free Will and Working Man. That's the one. Great reaction, and great introduction to Rush. Not bad for 3 modest, master musicians, heading towards the end of their careers (in their 50's at the time they were doing that concert tour). You'll notice that Geddy's voice isn't as sharp as it was in the 70's and 80's, but it still seems to fit the songs. After You've reacted to most of the vids from Rio, I would suggest getting the DVD, and watching the concert from front to back, and listen to the commentaries too. The boys had said that they were shocked and humbled, by how much they were loved and respected during the Brazil leg of the tour, and the crowd knowing every note, and singing/moving along with each song, energized their performance on stage. ("Beyond The Lighted Stage" is another good music documentary about the band) oh And if I may offer another suggestion for a reaction? You may enjoy their finally getting an induction into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. From surprise interruption of the MC at the show opening announcements of the inductees, to the fanboy inductor speeches from Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins (of Nirvana and Foo Fighters fame), to the incredible acceptance speeches by Geddy, Neil and Alex, to the huge jam session by most of he nights inductees and inductors at the end of the night. It's a blast. 8-) There's a reason that almost every famous artist/musician, point to *Rush* as their greatest influence(s), and skill levels to strive for. I think it was Dave Grohl that had said, about Neal Peart; *"He's your favorite drummers, favorite drummer"* Keep on, keepin on, and enjoy the journey

YYZ is one of 3 completely instrumental songs by Rush. Vocals are usually handled by Geddy Lee - (bass, vocals, keyboards, pedal-keyboard). Alex Lifeson - the guitarist, does some BGVs. A bit of trivia - the intro section and end are taken straight from the Morse code for the major airport in Ontario (airports have 3-letter codes, Ontario is "YYZ" - thus the name) - where the band are from :-)

As rush was flying into their home airport, Toronto they heard the Morse code for Toronto Airport. They incorporated that in the beginning of the song. YYZ is the code for on the baggage tickets for Toronto. The rest of the song is dedicated to happenings in an airport ei arrivals and reunions, people running around and departing their loved ones are all in the musical changes in the song. I think that is the story of YYZ.
