Gotta love how the three movies in the series focus upon the classic martial arts concepts of body, mind, and spirit. The first movie focuses on Po's body and physically training him to become worthy of being the Dragon Warrior. The second movie focuses on his mind, where he must come to terms with his past trauma and find inner peace with who he is, regardless of his past. The third movie focuses on his spirit, where he has to find what it is that makes him, him. His identity as both the Dragon Warrior and as a panda are in strife as his spirit is lost and confused. Only when he accepts that he is both can he truly become the Dragon Warrior, in body, mind, and spirit. Props to Dreamworks for such an amazing series.

Oh, I REALLY appreciate that this isn't just 7 minutes of Oogway Ascends. Don't get me wrong, it's a gorgeous piece, but it's the only piece of music from KFP that anyone seems to remember, when it has so much beautiful music to offer. Standouts are the inclusion of Hero from the first movie, Dragon Warrior from the third, and of course Kai's theme.

I absolutely adore Kai’s theme because it has such great symbolism. The rift is inspiration from Imagine Dragon’s song “I’m So Sorry,” which perfectly encapsulates Kai’s attitude as a villain. He steals chi from other great fighters instead of harnessing his own, being unapologetic and confident. Imagine Dragons song is about how the person is unapologetic and will do anything to get to the top, with the chorus screaming “I’m so sorry” when they’re really not. The person in the song is on a high and nothing seems to be bringing them down, seeming like an overconfident hero that it feels villainous. That’s exactly what Kai is. I remember being in the theater and listening to his theme and thinking it sounded familiar. I was happy to see in the credits that they were inspired by them when making his theme.
