This was inspired by something that really happened. In 2013, a guy in Wales accidentally threw away a hard drive that had his crypto wallet with Bitcoins valued at $500M at it's all-time-high. He still hasn't given up searching.

I’ve been there (with like $300 in bitcoin on a drive)

He didn't throw it away, his wife did. They ended up getting divorced.

Well with the current crypto value he probably should

What if the crew he hired already found the thumb drive, but because they thought Russ was looking for an actual thumb, they tossed it aside?

Most wouldn't know wtf to do with it, also there's many different people, who don't know each other, who would want to murder you

I'm assuming it would be encrypted with a password, so no one else would be able to make any use of it

you have to know a 16 word seed phrase to be able to access the wallet, so it's incredibly hard to decipher

I am pretty sure that he would find worker who are not familiar with crypto wallet. When this episode aired in 2015, crypto adoption was only 5% of what it is today, so definitely those types of people were easy to find.

Maybe it worked because he lost the thumb drive and didn't got the chance to cash in, dumping the stock

The writing is absolutely amazing, the great thing about this is it makes you consider the fact that they've been looking for thumbs the whole time...... The perils of cheap labor, hiring and confident people and then expecting great work And blaming them that they failed instead of taking responsibility

One of my teachers in high school told me he threw out a computer that had a Bitcoin wallet on it way back when it was nearly worthless. If he had kept that, he’d have been a millionaire easy. Gotta sting 😅

or more likely he would have sold them for huge returns of lets say 500% and worth 1000 bucks or so.

Wait - how is this a perk to crypto currency then? If your money can literally be lost due to hardware failure or some other way of losing a drive, then it's surely no better than being gold bars under a mattress, no? I thought the entire point of being decentralised was that it wasn't located in one physical spot, but could be accessed from anywhere. Crypto sounds garbage, which definitely fits with this scene well.
@IAmNumber40002 жыл бұрын
@@overseastom It's not a perk for crypto lol. I'm no crypto bro, I think Web3 is a massive scam (am web developer). Crypto is good for exactly 2 things, money laundering and buying psychedelics on the dark net.

Everybody has a story like this to tell, many of which are likely fake.
@nou46052 жыл бұрын
@@overseastom Its not located on one spot . The "coins" are "stored" on the blockchain. A hardware wallet merely has your private key that is used to sign a transaction. You very well can write down your seed phrase in an old diary and use it to recover your wallet on multiple devices. The private and public key of your wallet is generated from the seed phrase and it will always be the same keys every time you generate.

Russ is a moron who failed on 35/36 ventures lol. He was just rich enough that eventually he will get a win through dumb luck, that's the whole point (although he still managed to lose the gains somehow)
