Tom Hanks came close to winning his third Oscar for his performance in Cast Away-that is, until Russell Crowe took the trophy instead for his role in Gladiator. In this video, I break down the 2001 Best Actor race and discuss the reasons why Crowe defeated Hanks for the award. #oscars #academyawards #bestactor #russellcrowe #tomhanks #brianrowevideo

Another reason: In 2001/2 Russell Crowe was everywhere. The instant fame he got with Gladiator, for better or worse, cemented him as a movie star very quickly and it would have been hard to ignore that. As for both of them not getting too much Academy love since - I still can't believe Crowe didn't get nominated for Cinderella Man and Hanks was overlooked for Captain Phillips.

I’m pretty happy with Russell Crowe winning the Academy Award for Gladiator. He was amazing in Gladiator and the film itself is just fantastic. I do wish he won for A Beautiful Mind the following year, but due to some behind the scenes stuff that happened with him at the BAFTAs, his chances of winning another Oscar for playing John Nash became a lot smaller. Also, Denzel Washington not having a Best Actor Academy Award up to that point quite possibly lead to the decision of giving him the Oscar for Training Day. At least Crowe has an Academy Award, there are some who’ve not ever gotten one or have even been nominated for one. Great video Brian!

I think there was still buzz over Hanks because of the physical transformation and the fact that it was basically a solo performance, and I think, for a short while anyway, that Crowe sort of got lost in the hoopla over Gladiator as a whole; people loved the film and wanted to award it and may have only thought Crowe was just solid and not tremendous. But I’m just speculating.

In regards to the 2001 Best Actress race, while Roberts was obviously a foregone conclusion, Burstyn could've been more competitive with her astounding performance in Requiem For A Dream. I've always suspected the fact that she wasn't points to the likelihood that a majority of voters just didn't watch the film, which was the rare NC-17 contender (though I think it may have actually been released w/o a rating to avoid that stigma). If they had, then surely Jennifer Connelly - who just one year later would win an Oscar for A Beautiful Mind (and also featured in Pollack) - would've had a supporting nomination for Requiem, a far superior performance. Additionally, Aronofsky and Hubert Selby, Jr. might've received an Adapted Screenplay nomination. The absence of these nominations is very telling. Similarly, the nomination this year of Jessie Plemons for Best Supporting Actor also suggests (in a reversal of this theory) that a lot of voters haven't yet watched Jane Campion's Power of The Dog as, if they had, Plemons - a very well-liked and respected actor, for sure - likely wouldn't have received a nomination for a performance with far less impact than other potential contenders.

I think your last paragraph has it exactly the wrong way around - it seems like one of the only movies the Academy DID watch this year was The Power of the Dog - it got 12 nominations. Best Supporting Actor is very weak this year, with quite uninspired nominations for Plemons and J.K. Simmons (whom I love but he shouldn't have been nominated).

It's seems that past performance, missing out, etc. Seems to play a big part in who wins. Russell had been robbed of a nomination for LA Confidential in a supporting role & he had done the physical transformation the previous year for The Insider & didn't win, so I think this unfortunately plays on the voters minds...so many awards don't go to the best performance that year. I love Russell & Tom's work...they are real actors, as even though they're big personalities & so well known, you forget that they're Russell Crowe or Tom Hanks in every performance. I believe Russell deserved this win but should have won the following year for A Beautiful Mind as that performance was better! But then Russell not being nominated for Cinderella Man or Tom for Captain Phillips does my head in...

"Gladiator" was a box-office hit that has become a beloved classic. Christian Bale should have been nominated for his performance in "American Psycho". I think that Ellen Burstyn's performance was a) in a rather hefty movie and b) in the grey zone between supporting and leading actress while Robert's could be considered one of the most beloved stars then being nominated for the third time.

Their both great, they are very different on screen though. Two of my favorite films are Road to perdition with Hanks and L.A. Confidential with Crowe. What’s funny is that I grew up watching Road to Perdition and I noticed how different and how versatile Tom Hanks is, he’s not the friendly, funny America’s dad kind of character that he’s used to playing, but rather the opposite, he’s cold, distant and stoic in his role as Michael Sullivan in RTP. He’s very much like a character that Russell Crowe would play. Tom Hanks was amazing playing Michael Sullivan and I’m awed by his performance, but I honestly am curious about how that film would’ve been with Crowe playing the role, he could’ve been second tier to Hanks, he would be my second choice to playing that iconic role.

Hanks (he's my favorite actor of all time, I named my cat Hanks 😁) has been unfairly snubbed so many times at the Oscars that's a crime! Oddly enough, his 2 awarded movies are not part of my Tom Hanks film collection 😲. "Philadelphia" is heartbreaking I just cannot watch it again, "Forrest Gump" I consider an overhyped movie. I would have awarded Tom for either "Apollo 13", "Saving Private Ryan" or "Cast Away" over "Forrest Gump". And though I love Russell Crowe and own the director's cut of "Gladiator" and every time I watch it I end up crying at the end, Russell deserved more the Oscar for "A beautiful mind" than for "Gladiator". Crowe had momentum the year before for Insider. There were key screenings for Gladiator which many Academy members attended and Crowe charmed them. Thus the best pic win (lousy choice). But Crowe definitely deserved it for the year before. Gladiator less so. I don’t subscribe to the theory that the actor just won and they can’t win again. A few actors go on to win a second (or third McDormand) in quick succession if the role is juicy enough. BAFTA wasn’t a really reliable precursor around this time. Bardem and Harris probably siphoned off Hanks votes, opening the door for Crowe to win.

As controversial as this is and for as good of an actor that Russell Crowe is, I would have skipped him, kept all 4 Oscar nominees and added Micheal Douglas for Wonder Boys with Rush winning. I have made my own personal Oscars for almost 30 years and as much as I love Hanks, he never made it in my Top 5 until A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Yes, even missing for Captain Phillips. Fun tidbit! Russell Crowe won the Critics Choice three years in a row for all of the films he got Oscar nominated for!

Speaking on your intro to the 2020 Oscars I was disappointed how it was the same people with the familiar roles and movies getting recognized the only redeeming thing about that year was giving paraiste to everything especially best picture. There were so much actors and actresses that were robbed from nominations bc of Oscar politics most notably lupita nyong’o who should’ve sweep the best actress race for Us, as well as J.Lo for hustlers, Florence Pugh for Midsommar, Eddie Murphy for dolemite is my name, Adam Sandler for uncut gems, Alfred Woodard for clemency, Kelvin Harrison jr for Luce and the entire cast of parasite and it’s not a coincidence that the majority of those filmmakers that were snubbed that year were people of color

Another great lead actor performance from that year besides Tom Hanks was Christian Bale in American Psycho. He acts insane and a maniac. He got robbed of a nomination for that film.

This is a weird one that was handicapped much closer than i realized at the time. Every critic and magazine I read that season thought it was obvious Russell Crowe would win, yet it is true that the bettors had it marked with nearly even odds. Yet outside of the actors branch, it was clear that everyone was more enamored with Gladiator than Cast Away. And combined with the unlikelihood of Hanks breaking the record and receiving three Oscars in just 8 years, I couldn't imagine him winning. With your statement "it felt like a bit of a surprise" at 19:24, you may be speaking only for yourself. Objectively speaking, Crowe was a slight favorite in a two-way race.

While I think both delivered incredible performances Gladiator delivered an unusually intimate feel for they type of film it is . Gladiator also had a number of performances that enriched the viewing of it. Castaway lacks any other performances that are memorable . Third Oscars too I think are a bit much.

For me Ed Harris when it comes to the performance prior in the film character they played.. Should be the expected to win is Tom Hanks in Cast Away.. really Russell Crowe is the expected to win that time?!?.. voters and prediction critics precursors are the Best Picture nomination that is the lamest bases to win the acting category specially in the lead.. That should be the performances not the favorite or who's in the Best Picture line up?

Making diets and getting powerful zionist friends shouldn't guive you Oscar prizes... Taking over your shoulders a colossal and risky production directed by a REAL CINEMA ARTIST (Blade Runner, best movie since classical Hollywood, and not yet surpased even after) ...as I was saying, taking a risky production over your shoulders, being not Hollywood's sugar candy yourself, and taking that picture to the status of iconic piece of Art with an unprecedented massive reception that brought back a whole renge, YES, that should give you Oscar prices. Fortunetly it was the case in this occasion.

I’ve seen 4 of the nominations and loved them all. Gladiator was probably the only one I saw before the Oscar ceremony and I was pumped that Crowe won. Then I saw Cast Away and was upset Hanks lost. Then I saw Pollock and I knew which performance was really worthy of Best Actor. Ed Harris was amazing!

RC should have won for a Beautiful Mind. He was incredible in that. And why oh why wasn't he nominated for Cinderella Man? I guess his bad boy rep really hurt him. And when you list the movies Tom Hanks starred in during the 90s- wow, incredible, what a run!

tbh I think Russel crowe’s career peaked here, and he’s been tapping into the character he portrayed in “gladiator” in pretty much every single role since “a beautiful mind”. Anything he’s in lately, he’s acting like Maximus. I don’t think Russel Crowe has the range for anything besides gruff Roman military commander and that’s just kinda disappointing

Based on the fact that Hanks already had two wins back to back, only 6 years earlier (which you acknowledge) I’m not sure why he’d be considered as a real possible winner in that year. So I’m puzzled by the whole premise. There was no way the Academy would have given anyone 3 Oscars in that short a time. I think Ed Harris was the chief competition to Crowe. and I’m glad you spoke wisely about him here. And boy did Crowe ever win for the wrong performance. He was far more deserving the year before in The Insider, and the following year for A Beautiful Mind. He has this kind of Charlton Heston win moment in the CGI Gladiator thing stuck in the middle of two more deserving performances.

Yeah, Hanks probably has a similar appearance to Robert De Niro at the Academy. Both won two awards in a short amount of time decades ago now, so they don’t get as much attention now. It’s clear they’ve already won the hearts and minds of the people.

Out of the nominess, I would have picked Bardem. Between Crowe and Hanks, I'd pick Hanks. One performance I wish would have been nominated in the category was George Clooney for O Brother, Where Art Thou? He did win the Golden Globe for Actor in a Comedy or Musical, which sometimes translates to an Oscar nomination, and sometimes it doesn't.

If Morgan Freeman (or John Travolta) had won in 94, they would've given Tom this win. Crowe was better in A Beautiful Mind. And honestly LA confidential.

LA Confidential ? How can he be nominated for that spot while Sly Stallone in Cop Land and Leo Dicaprio in Titanic are top contenders which they should have been nominated ? Crowe was on a roll but for LA confidential was not a big deal for Crowe's acting.
