When you consider Oscar wins like Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holliday or ulie Andrews in Mary Poppins or Goldie Hawn in Cactus Flower the charm they brought to those roles has a lot to do with how well the films worked it's not small achivement .I am sure other things played into it like Julie not getting My Fair Lady but I wouldn't dismiss the what she brought to the role.Think how much of a dud Mary Poppins could have been without her winning personality.

Two of my favorite Best actress performances of that year were Sidibe and Mulligan's. No shade but Streep in Julia was almost phoning it in with a usual fabulously skillful acting job. I understand why Bullock won - it was just her time. I've loved her ever since "While you were Sleeping" but didn't expect much from her as a dramatic star. An Oscar for Blind Side felt more like an acknowledgment of goodwill by her peers for years of solid work and being beloved by the industry. Little did we know that she would reach her full potential as an actress and dazzle us with a tour de force performance in Gravity. Which unfortunately, somewhat diminishes her Blind Side win in my book.

It’s interesting to reflect how she won the Academy Award against those women she was up against, including Meryl Streep. I was always more interested in Carey Mulligan winning for An Education, but Streep did a great job in Julie & Julia. Looking back at how Bullock was nominated later for Gravity and people now see that she should have won for Gravity instead of The Blind Side. She did a very good job in The Blind Side, but she gave a better performance in Gravity. Looking back, I believe Sandra really should have won for Gravity, but when she had the chance to be nominated, they wouldn't let it pass. Would we have known she would have surpassed that? Just that in that year she gave her best performance to date, she had to go against Cate Blanchett's genre-uplifting performance. Sandra Bullock’s performance in “The Blind Side” wasn’t in any way a bad performance, but her performance felt very much like Julia Robert’s performance in “Erin Brockovich” but she didn’t do much to make that role uniquely her own. It’s probably the fault of the directors and producers, who originally wanted Julia Roberts for the role, but she ended up turning down the role. Her performance in “Gravity” is so much better than in “The Blind Side”, because Sandra was able be herself and bring her own unique qualities to the role, instead of being told to imitate another actor. It would have been a more worthier choice Oscar win for her.

The first few seconds of this video are both internet & TV gold I consider now a wonderful piece of early 2010s nostalgia I'm pleased to now be familiar with. Thank you for sharing that, Brian! I've stanned that hard for many of my favorite actors & singers as well. Yes to the "A Single Man" love! I'd have loved for Colin Firth to have won for that instead of the by numbers "The King's Speech", amazing performance. I was team Gabourey Sidibe for best actress, her performance FLOORED me and I love that Mo'Nique won even though she decided not to play the campaigning game which cost her her career for many years, so I've happy to see she's slowly making a comeback. Carey Mulligan did a great performance in An Education & I would have loved for her to win in 2021 for Promising Young Woman, she or Viola would have made more exciting winners than Frances McDormand in "Nomadland" (especially with how very wide open that race was and I think could be one of your longest videos yet in about a few years). Meryl was so dynamic and campy as Julia Child (I loved the HBO Max "Julia" adaptation as well though very different). I don't think it's better than her performance in Doubt, but she SELLS it every minute she's on screen. Still would have been a worthy win for the Oscars. I've loved Sandra Bullock for so many years and she is one of the most charismatic and likable actors ever from While You Were Sleeping to Hope Floats to Practical Magic to Miss Congeniality to 2 Weeks Notice etc... I love it when iconic A-List actresses get their "It's their time moments". And saying that Sandra Bullock is an Oscar winner feels very fitting like Jamie Lee Curtis... I just wish it was for "Gravity" instead of this. She wasn't beating Hurricane Cate for "Blue Jasmine" but that is her peak best performance that I wish had been released in 2009 instead. Great video, Brian! It was fun going on a trip down recent Oscar memory lane again!

The predominately white Academy loves white savior movies, from Lawrence of Arabia, To Kill A Mockingbird, to The Blind Side and Green Book. I know she's an everyday person with her acting career and humble enough to not get full of herself, but I do think Gabourey Sidibe should have gotten it for Precious. The Academy only just awarded Jennifer Hudson for her film debut in Dreamgirls and wouldn't do it again until Lupita Nyong'o for 12 Years A Slave, so I feel you are right that Sidibe didn't have a chance unfortunately, and that white savior films still make good box office in a white supremacy country like ours. That isn't to say that Sandra Bullock didn't do anything amazing in her performance, as we saw sides of hers we didn't see, like accent work and assertiveness and hidden vulnerability under strength, but Sidibe had it and the trend continued of awarding veterans over talented actors of color. The nomination did get Sidibe to still be working today, but I would have given it to her for Gravity. I do hope you will post your Patreon video on here. I think taking away the systemic bias towards Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side does a disservice to the dialogue we could still be having.

Baby Brian is so handsome! You’ve barely aged, drop the skincare routine 😘 I can’t laugh too hard at your reaction to Sandra‘s win, cause I broke into tears when Anne Hathaway won. I was at work, lol. For starters, Gabourey Sidibe would’ve had my vote. You said it yourself, she gave the best performance in the category, and Precious over-performed by many estimations. You’re right to point out that odds were against her because of the Academy’s shameful track record on acknowledging performers of colour - but I’d also like to point out two additional dimensions. Firstly, that Gabourey isn’t just a black woman - she’s a plus sized, dark skinned black woman. The entertainment industries’ institutions, including the academy, routinely fail and/or refuse to acknowledge, platform, or depict any of those things, but the intersection of all three made a win in Best Actress SPECIFICALLY unlikely, because that category has a particular history of being used by the Academy to reward performers and characters who embody their ideal of womanhood, (see the Greer Garson Good Wife craze of the 40’s as one example). This is part of why performers like Monique and as far back as Hattie McDaniel have proven victorious in the Supporting Actress category. Secondly, I’d like to note that we often view Sandra Bullock’s win through the lens of early post-election / first term Obama era optimism, (as BKR does in her perfect Sandra video), and I think we should ALSO view Gabourey’s loss through that lens. Precious is, crassly put, not the kind of black character that a lily-white institution like The Academy wanted to hold up during the afterglow of Barack Obama’s election. Perhaps that would not have been true if Best Actress’s history was itself not so lily-white. Perhaps if Cicely and Diana and Diahann and Whoopi and Angela had all won, and not JUST Halle, it wouldn’t have seemed so hard to uphold a young single mother of two from a background of abuse and marginalization that traffics in specific stereotypes. I don’t think it mattered that the POINT of Precious, the film, is that Precious, the character, works to better her circumstances by seeking something SO simple that extremely privileged white academy voters DEFINITELY take it for granted: an education, (oops accidental Carey Mulligan). While her story IS deeply moving and inspirational, I feel like a victory for Precious in Best Actress would have been perceived as counterintuitive to the moment. As for Sandra and Meryl, I think you’re absolutely right. What mattered here was that Meryl needed a third Oscar, and Sandra had presented people with an unexpected opportunity for a first. What stands out to me is that unlike, say, Will Smith or Brendan Fraser, who returned from periods of relative irrelevance, (great band name), with unexpected and uncharacteristic performances, Sandra’s accidental “Oscar bait” role came during a major peak for her - a peak so great that she was able to make a colossal dud like All About Steve (the kind of movie that is so bad it makes you question the decision making capacity of an actor and their team) and have it brush off her like nothing. The timing was everything, but it didn’t hurt that Meryl’s offering this year would have been, let’s say, a tough sell to many Academy members. I’m reminded of the way they’ve treated 72 versions of Little Women, and I have to wonder: do any of them actually take Julia Child seriously? Do they care about her? Is she the kind of figure they want to uphold and venerate as the pinnacle of prestige in American cinema? I really doubt that. Now - had Meryl’s offering this year been Doubt, I think that we could’ve seen the academy deprioritize Sandra on the off chance she would continue in her upward trajectory, (which in a sense she did, all the way to her career best performance in Gravity less than a decade later), but that’s partly because Doubt came with a high degree of prestige baked in. Instead of just Amy Adams (red headed step-successor to Kerr and Close) there was also the late great PSH, and of course Viola Davis, and then there’s the prestige angle of the film being adapted / directed by the playwrite, etc. Part of me wishes this had been the case. I vastly prefer Doubt to The Iron Lady, and it would’ve made Cate vs Sandra in early 2014 a much more riveting race - and while I LOVE Cate’s performance in Blue Jasmine, and consider it her best so far, I think maybe a loss there could’ve potentially lead to a proper win for Carol - at least if Weinstein’s orc brain hadn’t screwed that race up for all involved. I’m still waiting for someone, ANYONE, to tell me who tf is Alexia Vickamber? Anyway, it ultimately feels to me like timing was everything. The Academy recognized Sandra was having a moment, and they took their first opportunity to reward her. That tells me that they may have worried they’d never have another chance, while I HIGHLY doubt anyone at the time looked at Julie and Julia and thought “THIS is Meryl’s peak, she’ll never do anything this good again, this is a performance that will stand out in her catalogue for generations.” Imagine Gabourey Sidibe in 2009 joking that she was “going to beat up” Meryl Streep, lmao. Anyway. Great video as always! Hope you don’t mind these chunky comments, lol.

I personally think that Meryl Streep in “Julia and Julia”, Carey Mulligan in “ An Education” and Gaborey Sidibe for “Precious” were all much better performances than Sandra Bullock’s performance in “The Blind Side”. Any of the other three would have been more worthier winners in my opinion.

Love Sandy but she definitely shodulnt have won this year but that sucks to say because honestly, she couldnt have won in 2014 either. Sandy was great in Gravity but Cate's performance in Blue Jasmine was so well nuanced and refined. Either way, its great Sandy is an Oscar winner.

Absolutely. And I too prefer her performance in Gravity!

@@TheAwardsContender Kind of a perfect storm for Sandra winning it that particular year and sometimes that's how it plays out. I really wasn't a Blue Jasmine fan so I don't feel conflicted about that one.I really love Gravity.

Sandra had it from the start. Helen & Meryl - 2 older veterans and previous winners. Cancelled each other out. Carey & Gabby - 2 young newcomers and new to the scene cancelled each other out. Sandra had the only Lane to a victory - a famous well liked actress, not too old not too young, still in her prime and relevant in the industry

That Oscar should’ve gone to Precious. Sandra is a great Actress but that role was problematic, where the Academy could’ve done the progressive thing and award the Actor portraying the role of a young black teenager in the 80’s overcoming adversity and abuse from her own family.

I always thought that year was Bullock vs Carey, and that it's being actually remembered as the Oscar that Carey should have won, but I didn't follow the awards race that much then. I'd love to see the Carey Mulligan and the elusive Oscar video, by the way 😊

This is when the Oscars really started to lose credibility, for me. I started watching in 2002 and this was the first time I felt embarrassed watching the ceremony. People give a lot of stick to Gwyneth Paltrow for her win, but it's actually a beautiful performance. Bullock in The Blind Side is derivative of so many other performances and paper thin.

Sandra Bullock and real life Micheal Ohr should make a movie of the REAL story of the blind side He's suing the Touhys to end his conservatorship, he had been tricked into thinking was his adoption Now that would be an amazing movie

I'm of the mindset that Sandra's win was partly down to Evangeline Lily's absence (The crew behind Hurt Locker could have strong-armed her into that race much like how Jeremy Renner got nominated).

Gabourey Sibide should have won. I mean, Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side is NOT Oscar material even. Racism and contacts won that time.

I remember when Kathryn Bigelow won the best director Oscar that year, the band played "I am Woman." I thought that was so cheesy. I get it was a historical moment, but come on. Lol. I also imagine Lee Daniels thought for a moment he won because Barbra Streisand said, "the time has come," just before she announced the winner and at that time, neither a black or female director had won an Oscar for directing.

Ugh. I hate the freaking Blind Side. Condescending, pandering, basically lifetime movie about affluent right wingers (don’t get me started on those people), rescuing the black kid. Lol you acted as if it was a shock Bullock won. But to be fair my reaction to Streep winning two years later was pretty close. Bullock’s popularity, plus the movie being a big hit, pushed her over the edge. No mystery here. But Meryl was probably close. You must be fun to watch the Oscars with Brian. Hope you didn’t end up with a brain aneurysm or hoarse voice haha. I wish Bullock would’ve been nominated for the Proposal instead of tripe like BS. Oh well it was a popular win.
