He stated they had said said Gladiators had endorsement deals which was true in those times. But Russell and Ridley was trying figure out how was that relatable to the audience. When you hear about the issues that most big tent pole movies have during production, it's amazing that any of them get finished let alone being great. Look up the production issues for James Cameron's "The Abyss". Yikes! (But an excellent movie)

It is pretty amazing. And then people go on to criticize them. Outside of the script issue for this movie, it is amazing that large movies get made at all because they are so complex and have 100s of people working on them. And then to have them be pretty good, we all should be happy.
