Westbrook is putting up godly stats and is breaking records that were meant to be in "unbreakable". And now he's winning games too, 31-7 when he gets a triple double. I used to be on the Harden Hype train but Westbrook convinced me last night. #MVP

Russell Westbrook is the most disrespected player in NBA history. Russell Westbrook has almost as many triple doubles this season as Jordan and Lebron have had in their entire careers. You can't diminish averaging a triple double for an entire season after 60 years of nobody doing it because it doesn't fit your narrative about Westbrook. Russell Westbrook is the MVP. Shannon grow up, Lebron can't even average a triple double in the weak East. And finally, how is being a top 5 seed in the West not qualify as winning enough?

His numbers aren't as great as Kobe's 06' season. Kobe didn't win the MVP....and if the same criteria which was largely used by the voting media to deny Kobe that MVP is used here, then Russ shouldn't win either. Remember the criteria? "The best player on the best team".....what happened to that? MVP voting is a joke
@unbiasvsbias3955
@unbiasvsbias3955 7 жыл бұрын
pfunk42 It can be argued who had a better season individually between 06' Kobe and Russell. The main difference was Kobe's team. That 06' squad was absolutely horrible but kobe somehow pulled them to the 6th seed. And you do have a point in "The best player on the best team" which ruins the true meaning of being an M.V.P

Westbrook should without a doubt win MVP. what he is doing is amazing. replace westbrook with any average point guard thunder would be a lottery team. it is MVP not most valuable team. harden has a much better team around him. Westbrook is more valuable and a better leader than james harden. Westbrook has a lot of young players around him that he is haveing to lead and teach. it is harder to lead a young group still learning the basics, because college is a lot different than NBA, than an older more experienced group. Hardens has a much older more experienced team to lead than westbrook.

harden is amazing im nkt saying he isnt im just say westbroom is better and more valueable. rockets would still make playoffs with an average point guard. they would not be in the 3rd seed but they would be in playoffs because of the amount of shooters they have. if westbrook had good 3 point shooters he could dish it out to when he drives they would be a lot better. if I had to choose a pg to build my team around it would be westbrook because I think he is a better leader. kd left he stepped up and made thunder a lot better than most thought they would be after kd left.

- *Trash Team argument retort* : Many players have been through that, in these kind of teams. No one has ever come close to averaging a triple double AND 30+ points AND get in the playoffs in a TRASH team. With 30+ points and 10+ rebounds OR 10+ assists he would be a legit candidate. He is doing *both* AND his team is 31+7 when he does it. AND he is the most exciting player this year to watch.

+orestisDisturbed No one's ever "come close" to doing that on a "trash team", that also got into the "playoffs" huh? Oh really? Is that right? I'll just throw just one person's name into this conversation: 1989 MJ: 32ppg 8apg 8rpg on 54. FG% * CHI Bulls were 47-35 that yr, and were STILL maturing into a solid playoff team. Now if that isn’t “close” to avg'n a triple double, then what is? It’s amazing to watch you millennial fanboys come on here, and boldly make such ardent claims about the game’s history, while being UTTERLY CLUELESS about it. And what makes comments like yours even more egregious, is that your generation is supposed to be “OF” the information age LOL!! Which means you have access to FAR MORE INFO than ANY GENERATION preceding you. It's scary to see one generation CONSISTENTLY DISPLAY such blatant ignorance...SMH

There are two different parts to an assist, the pass and the shot. To assist on a three, you can just dish it to your left or right and then your teammate can do a pull up jumper. To assist on a layup or dunk, you have to pass the ball through a body or 2 (unless its a fast break or ally oop) which in my opinion is more difficult than just throwing the ball to someone with no one in the way. Now, I believe making a three point shot is harder than making a layup...sooooo. You have an easier pass for a harder shot, OR a harder pass for an easier shot.

@jtaddeo86
@jtaddeo86 7 жыл бұрын
C'mon Shannon, seriously? You can't talk about how the Rockets have less talent and then go on to name all the talented players they have (Ryan Anderson, Lou Williams, Eric Gordon) that are all probably equal to or better than the supporting cast Westbrook has. Who else on the Thunder is supporting Westbrook offensively? Oladipo is inconsistent. Adams has no shot outside the paint. Kanter has some offensive game, but nothing all that special. Roberson may as well not even be on the floor when they have the ball. There is not one player on this Thunder team that you can look at and say "This guy can handle the scoring load if Westbrook has an off night". If Westbrook does not get the MVP this year (and it should be unanimous) then the award is meaningless. Show me one single player more valuable to the success of their team than what Westbrook has done this year.

Journeymen? Lou Williams was Sixth Man of the Year in 2015, Ryan Anderson has been a very effective outside shooter his whole career and Eric Gordon has averaged double-digit points in every season he has been in the league (averaging over 16 a game this season). I wouldn't call those journeymen in the sense that they're scrubs. It doesn't really matter how many teams they've played for. Both Gordon and Lou Williams are averaging more points per game than Oladipo (OKC's 2nd leading scorer) and Anderson (13.5 ppg) isn't far behind Oladipo. Not really arguable that Harden has more talent on his team.
@jtaddeo86
@jtaddeo86 7 жыл бұрын
They got Kanter to complement KD and Westbrook because it added more of an offensive inside presence, and Kanter averaged 13.8 ppg and 7.8 rpg in his last full season before the trade. Now that KD bailed who else is an effective outside shooter? Not Adams. Not Roberson. Not Kanter. So you basically have an inconsistent Oladipo and who else shooting from outside? Teams can pack the paint because of a lack of an outside threat besides Westbrook. Harden has much better shooters, especially behind the three point line, in Gordon, Anderson and Williams.
@jtaddeo86
@jtaddeo86 7 жыл бұрын
Okay, but what does them being journeymen have to do with anything? Shaq played for six different teams, which makes him a journeyman, but that doesn't change the fact that he was one of the two most dominant players every to step on an NBA court. Just because players play for multiple teams does not change the fact that they're still crazy talented. They may not be franchise players, but they're still valuable. And Westbrook is averaging over 10 assists per game, meaning he does set his teammates up to get easier and better shots. Still doesn't change the fact that he's playing with less talent than Harden.

I know Harden is a better team player and contributing to more wins, but what Russ is doing is historic and what Harden is doing is great but it's not historic. We need to get over our collective bias for players on better teams and just award the MVP to something historic this season. No one's going to remember or care about Harden's 2017 season in 10 years. But Russ's triple double season will be remembered and talked about probably for hundreds of years.

I'm with Chris 100%, people have been downplaying triple doubles all year because Westbrook has been an absolute monster and almost normalized triple doubles. You look back 5-10 years ago, triple doubles were few and far between and were viewed as an uncommon single game feat. If someone got a triple double you'd be like "wow he played super well that game". People are trying to rationalize this unheard of feat by making excuses for why he's able to get so many. It's honestly so frustrating to see the hate he's getting for being so great.

Eric Gordon was around 3rd in 3pt% last year and is shooting great this year too (close to 40%) and has the ability to avg 20ppg. Louis Williams has been a 6th man of the year candidate multiple times in his career. Ariza is a really good D and 3 guy, been solid for every team he's been on. All 3 of those win players would be OKC's 2nd leading scorer. Westbrook is the MVP, Shannon will switch his vote next week

My problem with Chris Broussard saying that Westbrook is fine to neglect to contest his opponents shots 'because when he gets a tripe double they're 31-7' is this... Westbrook isn't just doing this in games where he has recorded a triple double. He is doing this in all games. Perhaps they'd have a better record if his rebound numbers were down but he played some perimeter defence. I totally get the fast break argument of having the ball in Westbrook's hands as quickly as possible, but how many points per game does that account for? It's a broken strategy because they're giving up as many as they are getting at the other end. A triple double is impressive because it's a statline that shows a remarkable level of overall ability. However, that statline is skewed because his rebound numbers aren't a reflection of his rebounding ability. They're a reflection of how effective OKC are at padding his rebounding stats. For balance, Harden's assist numbers are also skewed purely based on the fact that he gets an awful lot of assists from ridiculously basic passed to excellent 3-pointer shooters. Every player in the NBA can make those passes, but Houston shoot such volume from downtown with very good shooters. 11+ assists a game isn't necessarily a reflection of creative he is. Getting back to Westbrook, I also think his statistics are a lot to do with him not just being the number 1 option on the team, but more to do with the fact that he is the only option on the team. It's professional basketball and every player at NBA Level is top tier. Take Westbrook out of OKC and Oladipo probably becomes a 23/24ppg player. Even without Westbrook, they're going to still score 80-100 points most nights - somebody has to score the points. Look at how Saric has blown up since Joel Embiid has been out. Look at Love when he was in Minnesota. It's the nature of the game. Westbrook is taking a ridiculous amount of shots. He should be scoring a riduculous amount of points. That said, the consistency of his performances have to be commended and this isn't a knock on him. He's clearly had a great year. I'm just presenting the other side of the argument because his biggest fans seem to think that anybody with an alternative opinion on him is 'hating'. It's clearly a toss up between him and Harden for MVP. I go with Harden because i think he makes his team mates better and i think his way of playing is contributing to how well Houston have been playing, whereas i sometimes think Wesbrook's style might be counter productive to the overall capability of OKC as a team. He's still been great but i think we are a generation of stat obsessed fans and the Triple Double fixation is incorrectly giving him the edge. If Harden averaged 2 more rebounds but 1.4 less assists per game, he'd be a shoe in for MVP even though it would probably lead to his team being worse off - the 2 rebounds would probably be uncontested but the 1.4 assists could account of the team scoring 4-5 points per game less. And that's where the Westbrook argument falls down for me. He's the MVP of the stat chasing generation. He's not the MVP of the league.
@lawrencemerriman8768
@lawrencemerriman8768 7 жыл бұрын
Jonny Harrison That argument is dead to me because usually on a basketball team the center or PF will grab the board and pass to the PG (Westbrook) who should be near the 3 point line from playing perimeter D. if you wanna make the argument Russel runs faster than a passed ball i think you need to re-evaluate your stance.
@thomassowell3324
@thomassowell3324 7 жыл бұрын
Lawrence Merriman I'm on the same side of the argument as you. I think it would be better for him to run in transition and have Adams or Kanter grab the board and pass to Russ while he's on the move (maybe neither are reliable enough when it comes to quickly getting the ball to Russ) I was simply saying I understand the logic in doing what they do but I already stated that it's flawed, and even if you take the speed element out of the equation, I still don't think they'd rack up more points on the transition than they give up by Russ giving PG's near enough open jumpers. I just can't believe people are impressed by this tactic. People are valuing some padded uncontested rebound stats over playing actual defence (iirc, 8 of his rebounds pg are uncontested). He's basically playing real life basketball in the same way I play MyCareer mode on 2K.

ESPN Preseason NBA Rank (5.) Russell Westbrook (8.) James Harden (36.) Steven Adams (48.) Victor Oladipo (80.) Enes Kanter (86.) Eric Gordon (89.) Ryan Anderson (92.) Clint Capela Nobody was saying Harden has a better team at the beginning of the season. People were thinking the Rockets weren't going to even make the playoffs and OKC was going to be the 4th or 5th seed. Westbrook might be putting up these incredible numbers, but he's doing it at the cost of his team's success and his teammates' success. It looks like Harden has more help, but in reality his play makes his teammates better whereas Westbrook has unequivocally made his teammates worse. What's better, taking a bunch of average teammates and making them great? or taking a bunch of ok teammates and making them above average (at best)? #HardenMVP #Hockeyassists

TheHknight99 what system is harden running? What system is WB running? Like they said it was the same system that was ran in Phoenix that made Nash a 2 time MVP.... WB on the other hand doesn't have that kind of system and especially that kind of 3 point shooting around him.... people forget that now in this league you NEED 3 point shooting, it is a must have. But OKC doesn't have any perimeter scorers that Russ can kick the ball to, therefore harden has more help than WB does....

@atlien1988 7 жыл бұрын
TheHknight99 The Rockets have two guys that come off the bench that can drop 30pts at any given moment. They also have arguably the best 3pt shooters sans the Golden State Warriors. And that ESPN ranking means what exactly? That's only ESPN and it doesn't even account for the rest of the media that covers sports (although they are the biggest factors). Besides, it's not like the rockets' players (old and new) never shown the ability to play this good. Last season was a byproduct of turmoil from the coaching and locker room. The Rockets were not that bad; are we forgetting that majority of this roster was on the team that finished 2nd in the West 2yrs ago? Did that not happen? The point about the players thriving in D'Antoni's system is a very very valid one. It's extremely beneficial to guys that can shoot and space the floor. It is also better suited for a player as good as Harden. He's not the passer that Steve Nash was (look at his turnovers), but if you can pass the ball, you'll look great (not that he was never great before this system). It actually plays more to his strengths and give him more room to operate. Even if we took a player like Kobe (prime) and plugged him into this system, he'd easily average 8-9 assists. Kobe once averaged a career high of 6.9 assists in the triangle offense where the objective of the offense is to keep the ball free flowing or favors passes from the post (although the triangle can operate from any space on the court).

nah, but Dirk has played with Steve Nash, Antwan Jamison, Michael Finley, Tim Hardaway, Antoine Walker, and Nick Van Exel in the same damn season. Dirk has always had talented players around him. Even when they won the chip he had 6th man Jason Terry, Caron Butler, Jason Kidd (one of the greatest facilitators of all time, arguably the best rebounding guard in league history, and a great defender even at 38...check the 2011 playoff run), and Shawn Marion. Dirk has always had talent and he don't need to pair a top center next to a 7ft Superstar PF. If he would have gotten better at interior defense and rebounding, the Mavericks would have been even better and had more opportunities at the title Instead of the 2 they got.

Ferdinand Herrmann they are maximized. I'm amazed that he even averages double digit assists.

Why do we give Westbrook so much handy cap ? Like Shannon said if he gets 4th seed he should get MVP which makes sense but now we're bring it down to 5th?? Smh if triple doubles didn't exist yall would not even consider this

To be fair Shannon early on said that he'd give Westbrook his vote if the Thunder got the 5th seed. Personally my magic number is 50 wins. Anything less than that and I think Harden deserves it. OKC could pull it off they just need to be more consistent and stop playing down to their opponents. They should have blown out the Magic.

bomberbcm Harden deserves it regardless because his stats come within the flow of the offense. Westbrook takes over the team & doesn't allow anybody else to shine. He's literally getting triple doubles to elevate his own status.

Melvin's Channel Okay but why should it matter how he gets his stats if his team wins. For OKC Westbrook is the offense bc most of his teammates are defense minded big men. He has to carry the offense. I just feel with the weight he has too carry on his team he needs to do more to win than Harden. So if he can bring them to the found seed a spot right under Harden that is enough for him to be MVP.

I don't know why people in the comments are hating on Westbrook. Just enjoy this while it lasts ,because who knows when we'll see a triple double season again.

Sharpe keeps saying "but he's not winning" then proceeds to say if they get to the 5th seed then that'll be enough to give him the MVP. They're literally one game behind the clips for the 5th seed. You're telling me out of an 82 game schedule ONE GAME is the difference between "winning" and "not winning?"

He got it. Making better decisions in the fourth, and pacing himself better. His play is resulting in wins.
