Bob McKeown deconstructs the interrogation and shocking confession of Russell Williams. From his initial denial to the full declaration of guilt, the fifth estate deciphers one of the most compelling and distressing confessions in Canadian criminal history with the help of people who know the art of interrogation better than anyone else. For many months, the fifth estate has been following the story of Russell Williams and now is able to piece it together from the early clues to the final confession.

@@planes3333 They had lots of evidence but tire tracks and boot prints are not "unique". It could have been a person with exactly the same type of tire and same boots. That’s actually not true I heard in an interview by this gentleman that he had very little time to prepare at all In a perfect world yes they would have all the information that was discussed in this documentary but it wasn’t the case in this circumstance
@dalfifran7572
@dalfifran7572 7 ай бұрын
Actually the interrogator had an interview about this. No, he didn't plan for every eventuality, and no time to study Russ, they only have him as suspect for 2 days from tire impression. Infact, he's going in 50-50 about Russ as a suspect at the start of interview. Mind you, they don't have all the evidence yet at this point. All they have is tire and footwear impression at mid interview, 2 set of circumstantial evidence which might be enough to convict him on Jessica, but they have nothing on other victims. But as experienced interrogator, he knew how to respond and how to dig information based on how the other side act, then sort of going with the flow. Your style of interrogation could change based on how the suspect, witness, or other person of interest react to you. Of course as the interrogation goes on he became more and more suspicious, but it's only after Russ "freeze" reaction when shown footprint comparison he's 100% convinced he got the right guy. Lots of idiocy going on in this video. 37:19 "Just as if he had to get up and tell a bunch of people about the people who have just died under his command." WTF?? He's not exactly commanding a unit on the front lines ffs and never has. Tons of assumption and embellishing on this show to make it more entertaining. Also there is no brilliant interrogation here this guy was just smart enough to know he was caught, that lawyering up wouldn't save him and that cooperating would save his wife a lot of hassle. This detective quite simply just won the suspect lottery is what happened. The personality and intelligence of the suspect has as much to do or more with the outcome of an interrogation as the skill of the detective does. I don't think that this detective fooled or cajoled or outsmarted Russell Williams into confessing. Williams knew the jig was up and made a conscious choice to go the easiest route for the sake of his wife.

Come on, give the guy a break on that one. He was just making a point that the other detectives were watching as it was happening. He said 'Live feed' and then changed it to 'Camera'. The more I watch it, the more his regional accent is what makes me smile. But...I'm from near the same area of the U.S. that he is, so don't judge, lol. Yet I do get a kick out of his very Italian, St. Louis-y, Chicago-y accent.

It wasn't just the fact he creeped into women's homes, it was the torture he inflicted on these terrified women before he killed them, it upsets me to think about that. @@bradenmaccke9353 to be fair…it’s a lot harder to actually get guilty suspects to confess to heinous crimes without being convicted of them first than you might think. It’s because the guilty suspect will enter the interrogation with the belief that confessing is a worse decision than fighting the crimes they are accused of in court. Jim Smyth got the confession because he made Russell realize that not confessing to his crimes would likely result in an even worse outcome for Russell

It might be as bad as this man's bad deeds. But none of us are qualified to judge. At least we haven't been in school and certified for it. Main reason is none of us are perfect. If you're Christian you know what I am trying to say. The spirit in him is still out there as its been on this planet for thousands and thousands years and will be until the end of the world. We human allowed it to inter by our father and mother Adam and Eve. He needed help but he didn't seek help. He was fooled by that spirit whisper saying no one will find out. The spirit stole, killed, destroyed all he got and dumped him with others like him and out to find another person willing to be used by it. So, please let us pray for him. Be on his side. None of us are perfect. Especially if we stand before God. There are many things God knows about us. Our bad thoughts, bad words, and bad deeds he only knows

Detective Smyth probably delivered the finest example of a truly amazing "unintentional ASMR" interview one will ever witness. For all those who are familiar with what ASMR is please research it to explore what it is all about. In a simple definition this technique is designed to produce a tingling sensation from very soft speaking and can produce endorphines and melatonin- like circulation that acts on the brain to induce calmness and of course sleepiness. Not ONCE did anyone raise their voices or have a disagreement. Where will you ever see that in a police interrogation? I am certain Williams just unraveled slowly from this effect alone that brought him to a confession like one who slowly collapses a house of sticks one by one. I can listen to this over and over and I too can be put to sleep! Brilliant.

BTK (Dennis Rader) was a compliance officer and I if I remember correctly, criminal behaviorists thought his rate of offences lessened during the time of his employ in that particular position, due to the sense of control his job gave him. Bruce McArthur started killing in his late 50's and I thought that was a real statistical oddity as well.

the detective is great, but not genius, he had 2 strong pieces of evidence, any normal investigator should be able to get a conviction with that. unless the detectives afraid of what can go wrong if he's not confessing and that's why it's so important for them

I gotta say as I was watching the movie "deliver us from evil" and watching the police I got to thinking about cops where I live, that being Canada. Well I gotta say I feel really grateful to be under the long arm of the R.C.M.P. I wasnt always like that though as I was a punk who sold prohibited pharmaceuticals as i was an addict myself. I have had the odd wrenched body part or door slammed and I have been a guest of her majesty but now I am on the right track I gotta say it seemed my disdain for the police was because I was a punk criminal and those in society (generally) who don't do wrong have nothing to fear) I love being normal and not in trouble. I try and help with people like making orphans causes at "my forever home" known. So grateful to be redeemed

@@maybach5087 Well I sobered up what else can I do, I am now trying to help cambodian orphans, im writing a book, I have housing, I spend my money on productive things, I am not in trouble, and I go to church, have family and friends back in my life. I got help from god and I helped myself. Unfortunatly my friends were too busy or didnt seem to be motivated enough to keep in touch and look to see if I was still alive and I had to go and sweat it all out at vancouver detox. I havent done crystal meth and fentanly for 7 months, I havent smoked in three years, I havent gotten in trouble with the law for over ten years , and I have gotten my teeth fixed and also I am getting a tattoo of a badger on my arm in a couple weeks. I am also trying to get into the voice animation industry and I have about 300 goals, also I am writing my life story and I am looking to get counselling, I am doing my very best and I live in a building where drugs are around me all the time, I am really happy with how well I am doing, in the end I am really crippled from my poor life choices but as for this day and my future plans I am triying to make this life the best I can

@@planes3333 well I just saw your comments and although we have never met, I'm very proud of you. You have made the right choice in getting sober and by what you have wrote you have taken the steps in the right direction. I myself have my own demons when it comes to addiction and I pray that a higher power put me in the right direction so that I can star living my life in a way it can make me proud of myself. It's such a hard battle...and it all plays out in our minds. I pray you can keep strong and healthy and maybe I can also do the same. By what you say you live close to tentation so maybe you should consider moving out of the building you live. It must be hard to live so close to those tentations. Every time I read a story where the person struggling with addiction has overcome it and has been clean for a number of years it gives me so much joy...it makes me believe that I can do it myself too.

This interrogator is highly trained in interrogations and had probably done hundreds of them before this interrogation. I prefer the old days where someone like Andy Sipowicz would take a child molester or wife beater into an interrogation room with no cameras and use a little force to get answers out of them. Of course in the backwoods of Maine, we have our own justice system that operates outside of the law, when it comes to child molesters.

Possibly the interviewer's best line: "Every time I leave this room more problems come up. And they aren't problems which point away from you, they're problems which point at you." I don't know if Shakespeare himself could come up with this gem. Through this language, he lets Russ know he is trying to go to bat for Russ, but the sh"t pile just keeps getting deeper and deeper - and he needs the truth since "things are getting out of control quickly." This is masterful...

No, he never had any intention of "going to bat" for him. He wanted Russel to THINK he was trying to go to bat for him, so Russel felt luke he was talking to someone with his best interest in mind. In reality, the detective knew since the moment Russel walked in, that his goal was to paint him into a corner that he couldn't talk his way out of.
