Realistically, and I know some people will disagree because maybe they go to an abnormally strong gym, but 315 for reps on squats is pretty damn rare at a commercial gym. At that point you'll definitely have people checking you out. 405 for reps though you might get people straight up staring at you.

Yeah, 3 plates on squats and heads start turning in most places (I've been in commercial gyms in many different countries). Less so on deadlift, because you get a lot of bro lifters yanking heavier weights off the floor, but definitely on squats 3 plates turn heads.

I would definitely say it depends on what gym you go to. I've seen alot of weight lifted at military gyms and old school type gyms that are setup for heavy lifting. So when I see that I usually turn my head because it's not common to see. When I go to the bodybuilding/powerlifting gym in my city, I feel like it's rare to see someone squatting LESS than 315. I rmr at my local world gym I would get complimented by randoms for just repping out 225 on the bench and 405 on the deadlift, while at my bodybuilding/powerlifitng gym nobody bates an eye if they see someone moving that weight.

The same thing happened at my old gym were I used to work and train at and only occasionally visit now. I started training there from March 2017 until September 2019, then became a member of staff from October 2019 until August 2021. It sort of started in late 2019 that more and more kids would sign up for memberships with their parents present. Then Covid happened and we had 2 lockdowns here in Germany. But after the last lock down which ended in May 2021, the number of kids signing up increased even more dramatically.

For the gym I go to and work at, the point where you start turning heads is 315 since I can count the number of people on one hand that can lift more than that. appreciate the video, and we don't mind your long rants! it's interesting to hear a pro's perspective. anyways i'd say heads already start turning at the 3 plate mark. i'm at 190 kg, still working on that magic 200 kg squat. the most i have ever seen in person is 220, and the guy did it for 5 reps. 4 plates is very rare. the racks in my gym chain all have good adjustments, and i can fit in just fine as a 198 cm lifter. no need for a big walkout. i can also say the bars i'm using for squats don't bend in my gym (they have a piece of tape on them saying "for squats and deadlifts only") and they have great knurling as well. the clips are not very impressive, though... but they work. overall i'd say commercial gyms are all different, and mine is probably slightly above the average. the only massive downside in my cheap commercial gym is that bench pressing is extremely gimped thanks to hard, narrow and gripless benches. happily i have a good bench set up at home, so i'm good on that front.

The gym I usually go to has a few heavy lifters (600+ DL, 700+ squat) on occasion. I’m there 4-5 times per week, depending on my program, and my current 1RMs are 435 DL, 465 squat, 335 bench and 225 press. I don’t consider myself all that strong, but I’m definitely stronger than most of the people at my gym. I do get some stares when I’m doing 400+ on squats and DL for reps. My goal is to hit 500 on squat this year. I’ve only been doing the major compound lifts for about 3 years, on a regular basis, and I’m going to be 46 this year, so I’ve got some challenges to work through 🤪

225 overhead press would make me snap my neck with how fast i’d double take. Ive seen enough of the rest of those to realize that, while those are insanely strong, theyre not impossible to reach for anyone who puts time and dedication in. I have never seen a 225 ohp in person so the reality of that lift hasnt quite set in for me yet

405 is by far definitely the head spinner for sure. Ain’t that many normal everyday gym goers putting 405+ lbs on their backs. most people stick to about a 2 plate squat. Actually Not that many people squatting even 315.

I lucked out. The commercial gym I used to go there were a lot of 400 lb + squatters. It used to be a good mix between commercial gen population and more dedicated lifters.

I’m (obviously) no power lifter or bodybuilder, and I have a garage gym I use for compound lifts. The commercial one I go to is pretty bad for squatting, never seen up to 3 plates for reps really... (also it’s pretty small and if we’re being honest the floor is slanted)

My son's done 700 several times in commercial gyms - I don't know if he turned heads, we don't really look to see other people's reactions. Initially he didn't like the bar whip, but the last time he did it was a during a wave in a commercial gym, on an Eleiko Olympic bar, and he kind of liked the additional core workout he got keeping the whip under control during the lifts. The issue for him was more the hardwood surface where he was doing the lifts. The thickness of non calibrated plates sort of limits how heavy you can go.

@@yg78t76t7 On a competition power bar (used in powerlifting), the whip isn't a problem until you get to around 950lbs. My son's doing equipped lifting (single ply) and the bar is fine around a 900lbs squat. He's done that once. He's mentored by a guy who's squatted over a 1,000lbs a bunch of times in competition. Apparently the whip comes into play around 950lbs. The bar begins oscillating on its own just from the weight, and whips in random directions. You need to have a mega core, or bodyweight well into the 300s with a strong core, to control it. This guy's a tank. Ray Williams has done it raw, and he's a tank. My son's 22, not quite a tank, more an armored personnel carrier at around 355lbs. But he's working on it. The weight's also intimidating as hell, so you gotta get your mind right lol. Two nights ago he failed his second 900 attempt ever, not from strength, but misgrooved it halfway standing back up and lost his balance - thank god for side spotters and safeties on the rack - we didn't have a back spotter who could have helped to keep him upright and finish the lift. The weight was freaking him out a bit which I think was the ultimate reason for losing his balance. Oh, this was in a powerlifting gym, not a commercial one lol.
