I do the same damn thing. It's not a profession, Powerlifting is a PASSION!!!!!!! Remember, you go into Power Lifting as a sport, it ain't ever gonna be about the money, or records, it's about self improvement, form , and PR's safely. I'm a local beast myself. Currently weigh about 270 lbs, and my fit weight is 240 lbs when I ain't fat as hell. But I did compete in the USAPL placing top 10 twice in the 110 KG division with totals around 700 KG RAW. Almost everyone who gets to that elite level has a real passion for technique, and teaching it to others so they don't hurt themselves. Almost nobody in the top 10 gets injured in a gym. Injury means you did too much or did the reps incorrectly. And If you're injured, you're not able to train, and you get weaker. Thus, it's better not to risk it in the first place until money is on the line. That's why Pro Powerlifters like Russell are so damn passionate and safe. I'm not even near his level, but I'm the same way. Russel hit 1800 lbs total RAW in a meet. He only weighs 181-200 lbs at best. I was 2 classes and 50lbs above him, yet my totals never topped 1600 RAW. This man is a Beast I never even had a chance of being. That's the difference in a normal elite lifter, and a world champion.

I'm a powerlifter as well, but not anywhere near 765 (yet). I work out at a commercial gym because the local indi gym owner is a . Re chalk, they don't mind chalk as long as you aren't a jerk about it. They want to keep the gym clean, and have multiple scheduled cleaning times each day. So if you make a mess you will piss off the employees because they have to clean it up. If you just put chalk on your hands and don't leave chalk dust everywhere they don't mind. If I get dust on the floor, bar or plates I'll clean it up after I'm done. I think the gym employees appreciate it, which is why they don't bother me about it. Its all about respect, IMO.

I've belonged to two pretty hardcore gyms - one with a couple world-class bodybuilders (one of those post-career but still) as regulars. Not as much powerlifting but still some very strong people. And the reaction to this would have been very different - anyone doing four plates/side on free weights would attract a lot of looks. And clapping after five or six plates. Eight plates? The gym would have stopped.
