France's elections were today and the Far Right party with ties to Russia was defeated and came in third. President Macron's party failed to gain the most seats, but support for Ukraine will likely continue now from France. Same with elections in UK, there will be a change in government but support for Ukraine will remain strong.

Russian-British political activist and political activist Vladimir Cara-Murza was sentenced to 25 years a little over a year ago. Cara-Murza was also poisoned in 2015 by FSB agents and has been suffering from the consequences. Two days ago, he has been moved to a prison hospital do to lack of medical care. I'm astounded that the UK government has not yet put pressure, at least publicly, on the Russian government to release its citizens.

Well the kads arnt happy being called that so now they have put it out there that they would like 2 meet him and have a discussion lol. Lukashenko seems to be playing with fire? Hedging his bets is one thing, courting the Chinese so he still has influential backers after Putin withdraws from Ukraine and perhaps falls? But also showing Putin that he has a new, more powerful friend is inherently risky. Putin must be enraged?

More than an honorable man. Combat medics are the bravest people I've ever met. When I was injured in Afghanistan by an IED the medics didn't wait for the EOD or even getting the clear on defensive formation. They just rushed in. The shrapnel had barely landed before they floored it. I am only alive because of them. I like to joke that soldiers have a self preservation instinct but combat medics only have an "other people" preservation instinct. But... it's actually not a joke... They all seem to somehow have complete faith that because they're medics trying to save people the kinetic reality of war has no effect on them.

Please remember that the Russian people are also victims of Putin. I don't mean do absolve them of responsibility but remember that just like Germany was redeemed after world war 2, it is possible that Russia will one day become a decent, respectable country too. Putin and his oligarch supporters are the true enemies of Ukraine, and also of the Russian people even if they are too brainwashed to know it.

So agree. It still blows my mind that we have such weak minded people in America that any one of them would consider Putin / Russia as any person / country to be a "friend" rather than a "foe". It just goes to show that people need to learn to stand up and learn to be stronger because it is the weak ones that get brainwashed.

@@vaevictis6990South Korea can't apply to the NORTH ATLANTIC Treaty Organization. But maybe NATO will expand to the "Pacific Ocean & Trans-Atlantic Treaty Organization". It would also have a funny acronym: POTATO Edit: Because so many people don't have a clue about NATO and think any country can join. Article 10 of the North Atlantic Treaty sets out how countries can join the Alliance. It states that membership is open to any "European State in a position to further the principles of this Treaty and to cor tribute to the security of the North Atlantic area". Look at that. Article 10 explicitly states that only European states can join (after NATOs foundation)

I had a friend who was sent on a UN mission to South Sudan. The British troops were supposed to be relieved by Chinese troops. The first time they were shot at the Chinese ran and hid. The British ended up staying for a few months longer to hand hold the Chinese. I’m not worried about Chinese troops. At least 40% of their training is to learn Communist propaganda. They’ve not been involved in actual combat since the Korean War, and given their actions during the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan, they don’t appear to have the motivation to fight.
@agalah408
@agalah408 15 күн бұрын
What you say is sort of correct. Its not a mater of motivation, it is a matter of problem solving. From an early age in China critical thinking is not only avoided, it is actively suppressed. This runs deep through Chinese society. When faced with a decision - any decision, you either copy someone, or wait for someone to tell you what to do. This makes for an obedient, malleable society that the CCP have reinforced for generations. For Chinese soldiers, training comes easy. You just do what the chain of command tells you to do. No more, no less. It makes for impressive parade ground marches. However, warfare is different. At the pointy end hundreds of decisions must be made under adverse conditions and pressure. Where to shoot. When to shoot, What to shoot, all while trying to maintain a level of self-preservation. Sure a soldier must respond to orders under a chain of command, but a good, or even adequate soldier is also a critical thinker and decision maker - fast - and under fire. Deep-seated cultural programming in China has effectively deleted that functionality in Chinese society and military. The go-to response anywhere, anytime is "When in doubt - do nothing" We saw this with Chinese commuters stuck in train tunnels during floods. They just calmly stayed in their seats until the water rose and drowned them, while waiting for someone to tell them what to do. So in your South Sudan situation, I'm sure that what you said is true, but it was probably not a lack of motivation, but a complete lack of not knowing what to do, without being told at a macro level, other than to breathe in and out. When a shooting war breaks out, those that don't freeze outright, will just destroy themselves in pointless meat-wave attacks, like Russians, because they won't know what else to do and there are a lot of them. By way of contrast, we are seeing Ukrainian soldiers abandoning Russian command structures and embracing critical thought on the battlefield. One reason why the kill ratios are as high as 8:1. At least, these are my thoughts on the topic.... :)

801 / 5 000 People in France see the European elections as something without values. Most do not move, and those who do move do so to express discontent. So the far right's score was TOTALLY OVERVALUED. Be careful, I'm not saying that the far right doesn't score well in France. This party which took the name of the former n.zi party, which speaks to its electorate like a slightly slow 8-year-old child, is enjoying significant success. But not as much as the Europeans made us believe. This is why President Macron organized these elections: to remind us that the racist, nationalist, anti-European, pro-putin and propagandist far right party is present in France. But as a minority. And that it must know where its place is.

Ukraine gained its independence in 1991 after the collapse of the USSR. On December 1, 1991, 92% of Ukrainians who participated in a national referendum voted for independence. In every region of the country, including Crimea, a majority supported separation. According to the US State Department, Ukraine has the right and opportunity to reclaim the territories currently occupied by Russia and restore its internationally recognized borders that it had when it became independent in 1991. This is a complex and delicate subject which involves many international actors. It is important to note that any resolution must comply with international law and respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries involved. The reason why UK politicians have to concede when they lose is because they have a national independent electoral commission which draws boundaries, regulates financing and organises the elections. This takes politics out of the organisation of elections so losers can’t blame their opponents for their failures. All balloting is the same, there are no voting machines. This, of course, won’t happen in the US as the ability to draw boundaries keeps people in power who would otherwise lose their seats and ambiguity allows republicans a cop out whenever they lose. They still use First past the post, which is highly undemocratic, but it’s a much fairer system than that in the US.

The "independent" electoral commision was taken over by Michael Gove when the Tories ended the "fixed term" rules we had for 5 minutes and added the voter ID rules, so it became politically controlled and completely toothless. They also massively increased financial limits (which also favoured them) Fortunately Johnson's government collapsed and the Tories didn't get the second Johnson term their original plans demanded to complete the transition from flawed FPTP democracy into sometihng even less democratic. Expect that process to be on speed if they or Reform win in 2029.
@birdstwin1186
@birdstwin1186 15 күн бұрын
There is no ambiguity. What are you talking about? The only Republican that ever questioned the election was Trump. That's it. The US has an actual system for the House and Senate where if a person has the votes they get the seat, which is much fairer than what happened in the UK recently and Reform got half the votes of Labor but 5 seats.
@Whatshisname346
@Whatshisname346 15 күн бұрын
@@birdstwin1186If I may rephrase; there is a perception of ambiguity. This is not the same as there being actual ambiguity. Some look for reasons why they lose and the mere perception of unfairness allows them to continue this pointless narrative. As for the US system being 'fairer', this is simply not true. It is perceived as fairer because of the dominance of the two parties, this is not necessarily a competitive democracy, just one where minority voices are ignored. In the UK you can have a competitive race between three or four parties in the same constituency, allowing for more minority representation. It is certainly not ideal but there is definitely much more diversity than in the US system. Obviously a proportional system with multi-seat constituencies is more efficient and representational but that would require a consensus between politicians and the electorate, an educational program etc which the US and Uk are simply unwilling or unprepared to undertake out of self interest or sheer laziness.

The new PM assigned his ministers to their various departments over the weekend and EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING was in place to carry on running the country by Monday morning. There won't be another election for up to 5 years and, when there is, there will not be any attempts to exclude groups of voters; quite the opposite, local governments regularly send forms to every household for people to self-register as a voter in both local and national elections. You provide great insight into this horrible conflict, my chief takeaway is that all of us, all Democratic nations willing to defend against tyranny and brutality- we must maintain & increase pressure on putin from all angles. Lethal assets are of the most immediate importance, and they must make their way onto the battlefield at a much greater pace. I am an American patriot, I understand the power- and the fragility, of Democracy. Let's all do our part to preserve it in November. We have a very clear choice: uphold a free democratic nation that partners with our fine global allies, or dive into an authoritarian abyss. Fellow citizens, we are all Americans. We all want safety, security and a path to become better people. That can only happen if we accept our duty as the most powerful nation on Earth. We defend freedom, we bring justice to those who would take it, and we honor those who defend it. Glory to Ukraine, and God Bless America.

Proud to be French. When we go to secondary school we have lots of history about WW1, and even more important WW2. We learn how people collaborate with evil, but how others with values resist. We also go on the streets to protest, more motivated to not go to class and have a good fun, but that's a lesson we learn that if we go altogether, in millions, and in France when there is a major protest we are literally millions, then no government, no police can stop us, we have the power. And we go early, making sure there won't be any step to the side. That's the difference between a democracy (although we could do better like the Swiss people), and a country turning into an authoritarian regime like Russia. If you don't fight for your right, the you won't have any. Also we have philosophy courses, where the main target is to learn to think by ourselves. Unfortunately too many of my compatriots have forgotten these lessons. But the majority holds so the allies of the fascist regimes, the heirs of Marshal Pétain will never come back. May this be true.

Thank you as always Jake. Information packed as usual. No matter how many times I see the news about Pete, I start sobbing. It is a comfort to see him honored. Thank you for also mentioning that these memorials are happening every day. A Ukrainian parent, spouse, child, friend, loses a loved one every day, and feels a loss that far exceeds that of an outsider looking in. All the while, they are surviving each day in defense against an enemy that has come to their land to annihilate them. Glory to Ukraine. Heroaim Slava.

The UK is the best evidence that Ukraine's support isn't a matter of left or right but of moderate vs radical. Germany isn't different in that matter, nor are other decent countries. France is one more evidence that radicals are still in the minority. A large one at this moment, but this will change as it always has in the past. Radicals have a short lifespan in Western democracies. No matter their orientation. France is also evidence that moderates can unite and work together despite their different agendas and that the saying "United we stand, divided we fall" still applies. A special greeting to Mr. P and his minions and fandom. We may be "woke" but we aren't dumb. And we can bite back if needed.

"As an American this is very bizzare to me, the guy who got fewer votes in the election conceded and accepted defeat..." Thats because we do NOT vote for a Prime Minister or a Party or a Government in the UK system. We only have a vote for a constituency Parliamentary representative. Sunak did not get fewer votes, he was re-elected as an MP in his constituency and beat the labour candidate as well as everyone else.. At one time each candidates name on the voting form did not include their party membership. This was introduced not so long ago giving the impression that you could vote for party and its leader. This, however has never been the case in the UK. So who votes for the PM? Its the party membership that votes for the party leader and it is the party who has the greatest number of parliamentary seats in a general election that form the Government. This first past the post system means that although you can have more votes for a particular party overall, you can still lose the election. That is why some want proportional representation rather than the silly system that we have at present. It was the party electorate of the Conservative party that voted in in the past four leaders and hence the past four Prime Ministers and NOT voted in by the the overall electorate.
