Russia's flagship Black Sea missile cruiser “seriously damaged” - BBC News

Russia's flagship Black Sea missile cruiser, the Moskva, has been "seriously damaged" and its crew forced to evacuate, according to Russian state media.
The defence ministry said ammunition on the Moskva exploded in an unexplained fire, but that the 186-metre (610 foot) vessel was still afloat.
But Ukraine has claimed it struck the vessel with its Neptune missiles.
The 510-crew warship has led Russia's naval assault on Ukraine, making it an important symbolic and military target.
The Moskva has previously become well-known after calling on Ukrainian border troops defending Snake Island in the Black Sea to surrender - to which they radioed a message of refusal, which loosely translates as "go to hell".

It may have been hit by a missile (we don't know for sure), it started a fire while the crew evacuated. Later the fire may have spread to the ammunition and ignited it. If the ammo ignited the vessel is likely to be scrap metal now

I believe I heard from The Sun, that the ship was distracted by a drone, and then it was struck by two Neptune missiles. That sounds much better than incompetence in the ammunition bay.

I deliver papers in the morning. From what I gathered, they used a drone to lure the ship closer to land and to distract its radar. Once close enough, they open fired a barrage of anti-ship missiles, with only two hitting. These two damaged the ship and set fires that eventually reached the ammunition. The ammunition exploded and the ship was 'heavily damaged'. Remember, take what I've said with a grain of salt as I my be wrong on points. Only time will tell.

@@Crokey To be fair, the Russians are bringing back Admiral Kuznetsov from the dead, so unless it's actually fully submerged, they do seem to have a knack for upgrading and rebuilding old Soviet-era ships after decades of neglect. Probably because they don't have the capability or the means to build large military vessels. They haven't actually built any military ship larger than a frigate since the collapse of the USSR. Unless they somehow buy a Chinese Type 55 cruiser (unlikely as the Chinese are still building them for themselves) there is no way Russia can replace this loss within the next decade probably, unless they manage to salvage the hull in a state they can still build on. All of their capital ships are over 40 years old. Both Kirov-class Battlecruisers, the three (or now 2) Slava class missile cruisers, and the rust-heap that is their Carrier, the Kuznetsov, which spends more time in dry-dock than in the ocean, and which is perpetually being followed around on missions by a large tug-boat for when it inevitably breaks down again. For any other large navy, the loss of a 40 year old ship would almost be good riddance, for the Russians it's a massive blow they will struggle to recover from.

If the Moskva was destroyed by a fire and ammunition room explosion (As the Russians claim), then that would just mean they're incompetent in handling the ammunition safely. If the Moskva was sunk by Ukrainian missiles, then that would mean that the Moskva, despite all its advanced air and missile defense systems, as well as radar and early warning systems, failed to intercept Ukraine's anti-ship cruise missile, also meaning they were incompetent in safeguarding their own ships from attack.
