Russia's new 'turtle tanks': MT-LB and Z-STS 'Akhmat' vehicles covered in 'anti-drone' armour

Russia is fitting bizarre armour to its vehicles in a desperate effort to stop them being destroyed by drones in Ukraine. Video from the front shows a MT-LB armoured fighting vehicle shrouded in nets and chains designed to stop it being hit by FPV drones which are now everywhere on the frontlines.
There is a gap in the wire at the back where troops are supposed to get into and out of the transport.
Elsewhere, a Z-STS ‘Akhmat’ fighting vehicle was surrounded by wire that resembles a bird cage in a desperate effort to keep it protected from the drones. Again, a door has been fitted in the back of the cage to allow troops to get into and out of the vehicle. It comes after several ‘turtle tanks’ that have been completely surrounded by steel plating were seen on the frontlines. The first two such tanks were quickly destroyed, but a third - which also featured a large electronic warfare system on its roof - proved surprisingly effective in battle. Russia has been forced to resort to such tactics after suffering heavy vehicle losses in recent months. #russia #ukraine #war

Drone protection is already solved by competent advanced militaries like the US, Russia is neither. unlike the US which has had a standardized, professional, actually useful equivalent of this That they simply add to each vehicle when it gets to the unit. It's called rpg netting its been a thing since like 2005. Russia still hasnt standardized this. Plus the array of counter drone systems, the US has already developed that Russia is too technologically incompetent, sanctioned and uncoordinated to use effectively. And, they completely lack the coordination, logistics, tactics, C2 and strategies to effectively employ this type of weapon within their formations. A drone could easily carry a landmine and suddenly land in front of the tank. (in hopes of getting run over). There is a chance a tank crew could see this and stop in time (and shoot the drone/landmine with a gun or rifle) but with limited visibility in the tank this would not be a healthy thing to do. After seeing all the drone attacks I has sort of wondered if one would see this. A chicken coup, chain link fencing and chicken wire is relatively light weight compared to a tank armour.

Sorry but I don't see them producing more soldiers, they are tricking Cubans, Indians, Nepalese and other countries into that. I don't know where you get your info but that last thing anyone should say is Ukraine has a hard time getting drone. They have stepped up their drone attack ten-folds, Dude they hit an oil field over 700km away and a drone factory about the same distance but somehow it is hard for them to get drones.

The MT-LB is lightly armored against small arms and shell splinters with a thickness of 3 to 10 mm (0.12 to 0.39 in) of steel (wikipedia). Any heavy machine gun can destroy the vehicle, it should not be anywhere near the frontlines. It can only protect the crew against rifle fire and a somewhat against artillery. An fpv drone armed with an RPG-7 warhead can and will go thru any type of net and added armor plates because it was designed to destroy main battle tanks and has the ability to penetrate 300-600 mm (12-24 in) of rolled homogeneous armour. The fact that they're using MT-LB's to assault fortified enemy positions shows that they dont have enough BMP-2/3's.
