As a timely reminder of the Su-25's ruggedness, one was filmed being hit by a MANPAD near Bakhmut a couple of days back and claimed destroyed by various media. Until, that is, the plane was shown to have returned home with some damaged and a 'really annoyed' pilot.
@vic5015 Жыл бұрын
MANPADS by nature have small warheads. Stingers are *way* better at shooting down helicopters and missiles. If you try to heavily armor missiles, cost and weight spiral out of control rapidly. There's a reason why Washington DC is now protected by Patriot missile batteries rather than just Secret Service agents on rooftops that are armed with Stinger missels. 9/11 forced them to realize that they couldn't possibly have stopped an attack on either the White House or the US Capitol building using a commercial jet. Even if you shoot down a 737 with a Stinger, it's still gonna hit the target.

So you shoot it down are cheered by you mates as a hero, one of the very few ukrainian soldiers who can boast to have shot down a russian fixed wing aircraft (how many were even destroyed, by every possible means, a few dozen, like60, 70?, 80?) It actually is. Although this videos gives a very superficially description on Su-25 specific stuff (like flight control systems having rods 3-5 times thicker than fighters, or engine capable of surviving MANPAD) it really has same concept in mind. -Reinforced control systems -Well protected engine (especially for Il-2, but Su-25 has them on different sides for the same reason as Eurocopter Tiger has plate between them) -Rockets over guns (not the case for Il-2 with 37mm, but in general they had 82mm and 132mm HEAT rockets, while Su-25 has S-8, S-13, S-25, X-25L/29L) So it's pretty much the same plane.

The A-10 is superior in oretty.much every aspect, but that's partially to do with Fairchild taking some risks (that paid off) in their design and thus getting a more survivable aircraft, significantly due to the US specifying a larger, more capable aircraft in the A-X program, and finally due to the US using the typical American Cold War tactic of beating the enemy to death with bags of money. All in all, the Su-25 is a great CAS aircraft. The A-10 is better... but USAF politics means there are a lot fewer A-10s, because "Nobody ever got to be Chief of Staff of the Air Force by flying mudsmashers. @geodkyt Жыл бұрын
The difference ein outcome has to do with the quality of the competition in each design program. Suhkoi clearly had access to some of Northrop's drawings and data, and the YA-9 was a *very* good design that was neck and neck with the A-10. I'd argue that the YA-10 was superior to the YA-9, but it was a *really* close contest. The Su-25 faced off against a rewarmed Korean War vintage failure of an attempt by Iluyshin to build a "jet powered Il-2" (down to the tail gunner) that was quite simply, *bad* . The Soviets would have been insane not to pick the Su-25 over the Il-52.

The Soviets initiated the CAS program that developed the Su-25 two years after the USAF initiated the A-X program (that resulted in the A-10). The Su-25 is *remarkably* similar (as in, "Billy, your homework has the same mistakes as Jimmy's homework, and you sit right next to each other" similar) to the runner-up in the A-X program - the Northrop YA-9 (which was, in testing, considered a quite good aircraft with excellent handling). Note the Ilyushin offering in the Soviet contest was a rewarmed Korean War vintage jet that failed (and was cancelled in 1956 after adoption before more than 5 aircraft could be built), so the Su-25 was certainly the correct choice by the Soviets in 1975 - itbavsolutely outperformed the Il-52 (later redesigned the Il-102) in testing.
