In the sixties the Soviet Air Force downed a JAL Boeing 707 despite properly identifying the aircraft before shooting. Amazingly, the pilot was able to make a forced landing and if I remember well no-one was killed. In September 1983 a SU-15 shoot down a Boeing 747 from South Korean Airlines that was off route due to a faulty setting of the Inertial Navigation System. Possibly the Soviets were taking the B747 for an USAF EC-135 that was flying not far away. There were no survivors and the Soviets denied any involvement but the EC-135 had recorded the whole GCI communications. 🖕 In July 17 2014 ruzzian Forces in the Donbass mistook a Boeing 777 from Malaysian Airlines for an Ukrainian Air Force Antonov 26 flying much below and shoot him down, with 298 killed, 102 of them Dutch citizens. The Netherlands and EC basically shrugged. In January 7th 2020 the Iranian Air Defense shoot down by mistake a Boeing 737 from Ukraine International, killing all on board. No compensation was ever paid. And in Christmas day 2024 ruzzian Forces downed an Azeri EMB 190 by mistake. By any account, this is a horrible record of incompetence, recklessness and sheer stupidity.
