So I keep coming across the advice to watch Russian movies or TV shows or whatever *even if at first you understand next to nothing*. I'm open to the idea in principle (I come from a background of Latin studies so I have first-hand experience of the fact that a fanatical focus on grammar doesn't make you fluent), but I've just got to ask: is this LITERALLY true? As in, if I'm in a place where I can pick up maybe one word in fifty in an average Russian film, is flooding myself with dialogue I can't follow still going to have an effect? It just feels so counter-intuitive! 😁 But on the other hand, I suppose this is partly how children pick up their native language...

both tbh. the thing is that there are misleading youtube videos about how to cheat the system of language learning and other bs tips that are there mainly for the profit of the content creator. watching a TV series or a movie in Russian is great if you know a decent amount of words and verbs (about 300-500 is optimal) and you understand the Russian system of conjugaison and cases (and you can apply it by writing it or orally). spending time to build a great base of Russian takes the most time and effort because it's a lot to absorb by heart and if you're over 18yo, you don't have a baby brain which picks up info instantly because of many factors like the human desire to survive and understand the world around. i would say this video for instance is great because using Anki with Duolingo + learning the Russian linguistic system + applying + consuming Russian content is DEFINITELY the way to improve fast (from each according to their own speed and passion for the language of course)

Your hunch is correct. It's much better to watch with Russian sound and English subtitles in the beginning. That makes it more enjoyable to watch, so you spend more time doing it. Your brain and ears also get used to the language, so you can better make out where a word starts and ends, even if you don't understand the word yet. And because you see English words and hear Russian words, you can occasionally make a connection which word means what. So I'd look at watching shows more as a support activity. And have other courses/books/tutors to teach words and grammar.

@@LearntheRussianLanguage That makes a lot of sense. Are there any good open-access sources online for Russian shows with English subtitles? I know there's some stuff on KZbin, but the auto-generated English is frequently pretty... random. :)

@@ama-gii I'm using a flashcard app which has been a lifesaver -- I went from zero vocabulary to a little over 3000 words in the space of five months -- and I'm doing an online course for grammar etc. I find Duolingo pretty useless though.

There are case studies of people who learned other languages with no outside aides whatsoever. So it's possible, just slow. Foley, Peter Llewellyn (2018). Strange that someone is promoting russian language learning after what they did with Ukraine. And how during history they were pushing other nations to speak their language. You need to wake up really and read some history.
